Dad died this morning. He was peaceful and surrounded by his family. He will be remembered as an encourager and dreamer who thoroughly embraced Jesus’ words in John 10:10 - I have come that you might have life to the full. You can read more here -
So peaceful in
#Portstewart
this morning. I miss Dad terribly, but I know he is with the Creator in an even more peaceful place. And while the grief hurts, it is shot through at every turn with unshakeable hope. Dad is now with Dad!
Kate Forbes is both next level and just like many other Jesus followers - navigating faith in a world that has less understanding of what is means to be a Christian. A 🧵
Based on conversations with lots of leaders in different contexts and some informal polls, here is what I am hearing and seeing in terms of church re-gathering (in no particular order)
Church is NOT closed. Buildings are shut, but this is not the church. People are gathering online. Newcomers are being welcomed. People are encountering Jesus. Prayer is increasing. Foodbanks are full tilt. And the scattered church is serving on the frontline.
Love it - James Corden gets his Dad, a former Christian book seller, onto the Late Show to explain to the President how to hold a Bible and he finishes up reading from Ps 37 -
Christ with me
Christ within me
Christ behind me
Christ before me
Christ beside me
Christ to win me
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me
Christ above me
Christ in quiet
Christ in danger
Christ in hearts of all that love me
Christ in mouth of friend or stranger
The Bishop pf Oxford has come out in favour of same sex marriage. His core concern is that the church and society are out of step. Either the church seeks to change society (surely our mission) or the reverse happens?
The amazing
@HeidiCrowter95
has lost her appeal but continues to ask society why it is OK to abort a baby with Down's syndrome right up to birth? Why do those with disabilities have less rights? Respect to Heidi

Such a sad day for Ireland who seem to have voted for one of the most liberal abortion regimes in Europe - my heart cries out to Yahweh. Sacrificing the human dignity of the most vulnerable is too high a price for radical individualism and personal freedom.
#BothLivesMatter
Praying for our new PM and all MPs heading to Westminster. They bear considerable responsibility. But in this advent season, we are reminded that the government rests on His shoulders - and He shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace
I see lots of critiques of the coronation but fundamentally it was a worship service with Bible readings, prayers, a sermon highlighting Jesus and His kingdom, and some great sung worship and liturgy watched by millions. Come Holy Spirit and change lives.
Where were all these MPs who want to ‘defend democracy’ over Brexit when Westminster voted for radical pro-abortion laws in Northern Ireland (tagged to a budget bill) without the support of any NI MP or any democrat of mandate from the people of NI?
Cafes and restaurants in cities like Brussels & Paris are being allowed to take over road & path space to help them reopen. Would you like to see the same in Dublin?

Missing this legend today. Praying especially for all who lost their dads in the last year. I’m looking forward to seeing you again Dad - hopefully not too soon 😉
When it comes the the human dignity of the unborn we remain a beacon of hope in Northern Ireland and as the world around grows darker, that beacon will grow brighter.
#BothLivesMatter
Some may have heard that my Dad had a major stroke just over a week ago. Thanks to all who have been praying - he remains critical but stable and there have been positive signs. It hard to respond to everyone so I have posted a little update -
You can protest (picket) outside one business (Chick-fil-A) as long as it’s the ‘right’ issue (perceived dislike of LGBT community); but you can’t protest (pray) outside a different business (Marie Stopes) because it is the ‘wrong’ (right to life) issue. Strange times.
I commented this morning on

- as a gay celibate Christian she feels totally invisible in what the Bishop's have proposed. She feels her commitment is being undermined.
The insensitivity to the victims is staggering. The strategy wasn’t democratic - it involved the armalite and ballot box. The “North of Ireland” rather than NI. And then muting the conversation - suggests
@HackneyAbbott
knew what she was doing. Disappointing.
Well done

- Stormont to be recalled after more than 25,000 support an abortion petition and the call from Baroness O’Loan for the Assembly to reconvene.
Northern Ireland has 100,000 people alive because we don't have abortion on demand. We also have lowest number of children in care. Limiting abortion doesn't lead to increased children in care. Great to live in the most caring & progressive part of the UK
Praying for the CoE bishops as they meet today. Praying for a clear conclusion for the process, to honour their commitment to marriage and tell a better story on sex and sexuality that is biblically faithful and pastorally sensitive.
If you are preaching anywhere today, don't underestimate what could happen -
@sajidjavid
confirms it was Les Isaac's sermon at National Prayer Breakfast that nudged him to resign & instigated this week's seismic events...
The most watched sermon will also be the most critiqued (judging by twitter!) Remember he had 502 words and instructions from her majesty. It was a global event, a state event and a family funeral. I'm going to expend most of my energy praying it continues to impact people.🙏
I finish today with a deep sense of sadness. God remains on the throne and things can certainly change before 21 October. But I am sad that so many want decriminalisation - abortion without limits - that they see no value in the life of an unborn child.
Whether the prayer breakfast was key, and I think it might be more instrumental than some think, let’s continue to pray for our government as the PM resigns. There are massive challenges and we need good, fair and just governance. Lord have mercy.
Kate Forbes is not a bigot. To call her a bigot - because she has deeply held religious beliefs, votes in line with those beliefs and tells everyone clearly she does this - is an act of bigotry. If bigotry is reduced to - she disagrees with me - it looses all meaning.
Missing this legend today. Two years on - still a huge hole. Miss you Dad. Not sure he would have coped to well with the Covid madness. (And yes, his OBE was upside down in every photo 🤣)
“No place for these views” - note this person isn’t talking about being FM - just being in Scotland. There is apparently “no place” for mainstream religious views held by a number of faiths. She’s obviously wrong - but surely there should be “no place” for such intolerance!
Kate Forbes is standing to be the next leader of Scotland. She is anti-gay marriage and anti-abortion. There is no place for these views in a progressive Scotland/ UK/ World. Sorry, Kate, you're about 80 years too late to politics with those views.
When I told my 10 year old daughter that the government were texting about the lockdown, she replied to Boris highlighting her GDPR concerns 🤣 (proud father!)
The early church grew, not by conforming to the culture around it, but in part because it rejected the sex ethic of the culture and instead advocated sexual faithfulness, financial promiscuity, charity to the stranger and a home for discarded newborns.
A survey by
@Tearfund
has revealed that 34% of 18-34 year-olds have watched or listened to a religious service since lockdown, while 5% of respondents who said they had done this had never gone to church previously - this is awesome -
Augustine - “He lies in a manger, but he holds the whole world in his hands; he sucks his mother’s breasts, but feeds the angels; he is swaddled in rags, but clothes us in immortality...he could find no room in the inn, but makes a temple for himself in the hearts of believers.”
Fascinating. Twitter and politicians get in a frenzy, backers back out, while the public is very happy with Kate Forbes. Turn out honesty, integrity and decency are in fashion after all!
The President complained that the letter addressed him as ‘President of the Republic of Ireland’. He has now acknowledged that was inaccurate. But in refusing to attend, he has actually made himself the President of a part rather than the whole of Ireland. That is the irony.
Today is All Saints’ Day so why not honour some living saints who have impacted your life. These two have had such an impact on me (and many others). Mum and Dad, I love the example you have set and how your love for Jesus shines through - now more than ever.
This advert makes pretty clear those with a conscientious objection should not apply - and note the irony of the moto - life glorious life. Doubtful it is legal. No doubt it is wrong.
Note the framing here - bishops refuse to back change, at odds with Scottish churches, story and long quotes from one side. Nothing of the fact they are affirming their current position in line with the global majority of churches.
So sad to watch the Church of England vote for compromise on questions of sex and sexuality, but great to stand with so many who spoke, voted for and live into a better story.
#synod
The invitation letter from church leaders to President Higgins. People can read it and judge for themselves, but it seems like another missed opportunity.
Thanks
@BelTel
for this fitting tribute to Dad - he was a man of vision, guts and tenacity who leaves a living legacy in the many lives he touched and the impact he had for Jesus and the Kingdom.
My thoughts on the Vunipola story - beware the new ‘sexular orthodoxy’, remember there is no such thing as private faith, and most importantly- what will you do with Jesus this Easter?
This is the reality of ill-thought out buffer zones - thought crimes and prayer bans. This isn’t about your views on abortion - it’s about freedom of opinion and belief.
Lots of MPs mentioning this research which shows 100,000 people are alive in NI today because we don’t have the 1967 Abortion Act - this fact is proving hard for the pro-abortion advocates to ignore
Coming out of lockdown we need to strengthen relationships, not undermine them. ‘Quickie’ divorces and increased Sunday working for the lowest paid is not the way to do this. We can do better.
Synod has voted to bless something contrary to Jesus and the Bible. Saddened for friends in the CoE but encouraged by the many who spoke, voted for, and investigate into a different story. Praying for them as the CoE decides if there is a place for orthodoxy within it.
Fascinating that

Turns out holding orthodox Christian beliefs and explaining them with generosity and clarity is popular with the public in Scotland - go Kate Forbes - confounding almost everyone!
Who will be the next leader of Scotland?
Our poll has found that Kate Forbes is in the lead as the public's choice, but among SNP voters it's a different story.
@C4Ciaran
crunches the numbers.

My quote for
@EAUKnews
supporting
@bvunipola
has been picked up-Is he being disciplined for quoting scripture? For holding orthodox Christian beliefs or just for expressing them? Do rugby players have freedom of religion or is this another faith-free zone?
Wow - after more than 1000 days - it looks like
@BothLivesMatter
have managed the impossible - word is at least 30 MLAs have signed to recall the Assembly. It is over to the MLAs now - only an Executive will cause the Westminster abortion legislation to fall.
We have facilitated signatures from 3 political parties; thank you to those MLAs & we await confirmation from the business office that the Assembly will be recalled on Monday
@niassembly
There is lots more to say but how do we respond. First, please pray for Kate. She is doing what lots of Christians do every day, but the spotlight on her is a little more intense. She’s also a new mum, still supposed to be on maternity leave. Pray for protection, peace & wisdom.
Kate Forbes tops poll to replace Nicola Sturgeon. Poll found “only five per cent of SNP supporters think the new leader’s faith or personal beliefs are important.” Fascinating stuff.
If you live in Northern Ireland and are concerned about the imposition of abortion law by Westminster or even just the deeply flawed process, then please sign this open letter to the PM by Baroness O'Loan - and spread the word - this is urgent -

Christianity is still by far the biggest religion in England & Wales. That's the headline you probably won't hear today. Given that 46.2% of people identify as Christian - why aren't we seeing more positive media coverage and more political influence?
There were no confirmed deaths from Coronavirus today in Ireland - first day with no fatalities since mid March. Fatality rates continue to fall across the UK overall. Plans are emerging for schools to reopen, business to restart and families to meet up. Let’s focus on that.
@dmcbfs
Staggering take! It’s not “a bar” - it’s lots of bars, Dublin Airport, Irish Women’s FAI, GAA matches, topping iTunes, Lizzy’s in a box and so on. Few condemnations, lots of defenders. People can sing what they want - but it’s clearly not an inclusive or new Ireland.
Please don’t look back in a few months time with regret and say you didn’t realise the moves to bring abortion to NI were serious or you didn’t know what to do. Read this letter, sign it and make sure we do what we can to keep our life affirming culture -
You should be able to say this on twitter & paint it on a wall as long as you have planning permission. But as my dad lies dying, I feel so sad for those who think we are just a bunch of cells with no meaning and that death will be the end. My hope is in Jesus who defeated death!
@peterlynas
On my way to Portstewart paint bucket and brush in hand. Lots of "There is no god", "Enjoy this life, its the only one you will ever have" etc coming to a wall near you soon.
Looks like in NI we have had a record number of tests carried out which not surprisingly has lead to a record number of positive cases but hospitalisations are at a low since mid-July. Vaccinations are working. Let’s stay calm and sensible.
#NoMoreLockdowns
Great stuff from the Queen - "But Easter isn’t cancelled; indeed, we need Easter as much as ever. The discovery of the risen Christ on the first Easter Day gave his followers new hope and fresh purpose, and we can all take heart from this." Christ is risen.
Very unhelpful comments from councillor John Carson on
#covid19
which of course the media go to town on. The church response is one of compassion, practical needs (like Foodbanks), lament, hope and prayer - which we are uniting in this Sunday - join us -
How to look silly & partisan. 1. Take graph of tragic epidemic. 2. Take your pet hate and find an event that occurred where graph begins to turn up exponentially. 3. Design a clumsy image insinuating the event is the turning point. 4. Ignore any causation/ correlation question.
