In memory of Roy Cross (1924-2024), the British aviation artist who passed away earlier this year, only one day after celebrating his 100th birthday. Cross is most famous for the many box top illustrations he created for Airfix plastic model kits in the 1960s & 70s.

‘First Kill’ - oil painting by Roy Grinnell (1933-2019). This work portrays the PZL P-11c of Polish pilot Lt Wladek Gnys of the 121st Fighter Escadrille. Between 5.30-7.00am on 1 Sept 1939, Gnys destroyed two Dornier Do-17E bombers, the first Allied air victories of WW2.

1/2: Late in the morning of Dec 7, 1941 a pair of Curtiss SOC Seagull reconnaissance seaplanes launched from the cruiser USS Northampton were flying west of the island of Kauai when they were attacked by a Japanese Zero returning from the Pearl Harbour attack.

Painting l did in 2019. Dornier Do-335 Pfeil (Arrow), a high performance German fighter-bomber produced in the final phase of WW2. Only 11 combat versions were delivered before the end of the war. A few Allied pilots claimed to have had encounters with Do-335s in April 1945.

Painting l did in 2019. Italian Fiat CR.42 Falco of the Regia Aeronautica. On 8th Aug 1940, 16 CR.42s of 4th Stormo engaged 14 Gloster Gladiators of 80 Sqd south of Tobruk, Libya. Four CR.42s and two Gladiators were shot down in the melee. Acrylic on paper 40 x 29cm

Painting l did in 2019. Bristol Beaufort of the Royal Australian Air Force, 1942. A total of 700 Beauforts were built under license by DAP in Australia and they equipped 19 RAAF Squadrons 1942-45 in the Pacific. One notable action was the Battle of Bismarck Sea in March 1943.

Painting l did in 2014. Italian Regia Aeronautica Fiat CR.42 surprising an LRDG patrol North Africa 1942. I read that LRDG/SAS teams feared the CR.42 more than modern Axis fighters because the biplanes were quieter and could creep up on them low & slow without stalling.

Painting l did in 2013. Red Air Force Polikarpov I-16 near the Leningrad Front in the winter of 1941-42. Russian pilots nicknamed it ‘Ishak’ (Donkey). Despite its increasing obsolescence, the I-16 remained a frontline fighter until 1943. Acrylic on paper 45 x 65 cm

@rgpoulussen Similar to when the Japanese surrender delegation landed on Le Shima atoll on 19 Aug 1945. One young officer tried to present a bouquet of flowers to the US officers who greeted the plane but the latter refused to accept them. He then awkwardly wondered what to do with them.

Painting l did in 2017. Lend-Lease Curtiss P-40E of the Red Air Force in 1943. Over 2,400 P-40s of various models served on the eastern Front during WW2. Russian pilots rated the P-40 as generally inferior to the Bell P-39 which served with the Red Air Force in greater numbers.

Painting l did in 2018. Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki (‘Devil Queller’), known to the Allies as the ‘Tojo’. Heavy fighter that served with the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (JAAF). It was one of the very few Japanese fighters that could match allied types in rates of climb & dive.

‘Downed Enemy Plane’ by Max Edler von Poosch. Oil on canvas, 1917. Collection of National Military Museum, Vienna. Von Poosch (1872-1968) was an Austrian official war artist during the Great War. He produced this work of a crashed Italian Nieuport fighter in the Alps.

2/4 training but at that stage of the war, sorties were very likely to encounter Allied aircraft. Structural and mechanical problems caused 11 Salamanders to crash, killing 10 pilots. An additional two were lost in crashes during attempted glide landings after the fuel ran out.

1/2: Painting l did in 2020. Curtiss P-36 of Lt Harry W. Brown, 47th Pursuit Squadron USAAC. During the Pearl Harbour attack on 7 Dec 1941, Brown took off from Haleiwa Field. Brown was officially credited with two successes from his sortie (his tally reached 7 later in the war).

Acrylic l did in 2020. Red Air Force Spitfire Mk IX. Over 1,200 Spitfire 9s served with the Russian air-force from 1943. Russian pilots liked its handling but its undercarriage proved unsuited to the rugged forward airfields. Russian AA-gunners often mistook it for BF-109s.

1/: Painting l did in 2017. Hungarian Heinkel He-112 fighter in action over Russia in the summer of 1941. The 5th Fighter Group of the Romanian Air Force included two squadrons of He-112s. These units saw action on the opening day of Operation Barbarossa June 22, 1941.

4/4. was not allowed, instead credited to a flak unit but the Typhoon pilot, who was captured, told the Germans it was the jet that had got him. Kirchner was shot down and killed later that day by a Tempest flown by F/O Geoffrey Walkington.

Acrylic l did in 2018. Mitsubishi J2M Raiden. Of the 414 Boeing B-29s lost on bombing missions over Japan 1944-45, 74 were lost to Japanese fighter attack, 57 to anti-aircraft fire and 19 to a combination of both. The remainder were non-combat losses.

‘Battle For Britain’ - oil on canvas by David Shepherd (1931-2017). Shepherd, a British artist, is best known for his wildlife & landscape work but he also did aviation & railway works including this one inspired by his memories of witnessing the Battle of Britain as a 9-yr-old.

‘Dogfight’ by Rudolf Stark. Watercolour on paper, 1920. Stark (1897- ?) was a German pilot during WW1 credited with at least 11 Allied aircraft. A talented artist he produced watercolours after the war based on his memories as a pilot. Stark wrote a book Wings of War in 1933.
