Most of you know that my mother passed away in November. She was notorious for saving documents, and as we were going through her papers, I came across a 1985 editorial by Jim Rogers from Channel 13 News. Many of you have pressured me to say that Coach Kruger should be fired or criticized me for being too "soft" on him. Please read this editorial to understand why I am reluctant to call for a coach's dismissal. Imagine being an 18-year-old kid, hanging out with your high school friends, and watching this editorial on the news, just like I did in 1985. Keep in mind that this was delivered two years after the team was ranked #1, one year after reaching Sweet 16, and just months after a round of 32 appearance. Back in 1982, I read the "Letters to the Editor" in the RJ, where, week after week, fans were calling for my father's job. Despite the fact that my dad's worst year at UNLV was better than my previous coach's best year at a D1 school, they claimed he had "lost it" or that the game had "passed him by." From 1983 to 1992, UNLV had the most successful record of any D1 program under his leadership. Yet, if many had their way, that success would never have happened. I do not like calling for a coach to lose his job for several reasons. First, it's frustrating because the vast majority of those calling for a coach's job can't distinguish between good and bad coaching; they only recognize winning and losing. Many are just hateful and negative, deriving joy from being "angry and bullying ". The second reason is the impact on the coach's family. They read your venomous words, and it's hurtful and painful. Many were surprised when I was quoted in the San Diego Tribune in 1987, suggesting that SDSU should look to hire my dad from UNLV. My sentiment was a direct reflection of those past attacks. It was so stressful that I had to stop following the news in 1991. The only coach I have actively called for dismissal was Otz, and that was because he publicly criticized Jenkins for poor play in the media. I have given my objective opinions on the team's performance and questioned coaching decisions, but I will not generally call for a coach's dismissal. UNLV might choose to go in another direction; that's their decision. All of you have the right to your opinion, but don't ask me to join in on the lynch mob against a coach's job. People who have much more at stake than just fans are often reading these posts.
