Today’s dedication of a new CWGC memorial in Capetown to over 1700 men of the South African Labour Corps who died in WW1 but were never commemorated - until now. The graves are lost so each Iroko pillar has an individual name to enable us to remember their sacrifice. @CWGC

A few days in Kenya visiting some of our 38 sites. Nairobi cemetery looked delightful and lush whilst Voi has a quiet dignity. Climate change will inevitably result in more being converted to dry sites like Voi. Beautiful Askari memorial in Mombasa. Watch out for lions! @CWGC

@sir_jonathan @ShippingButters @BeaverWestminst @TomSharpe134 @shashj The persistent shortage of people is the dominant factor driving the laying up policy - woeful 45s (and some 23s) since the early 2010s, LPDs and the current woeful RFA flotilla are examples. If we had the crews, the ships would be moved through maintenance far more quickly.

As we approach Remembrance Day, I’ve been visiting some of the 170000 graves we care for in the UK. This group is in the West Midlands: some are easy to find, some less so! The local mason also misinterpreted headstone instructions in 1944 and came up with his own design! @CWGC

A trip to Northern Greece to visit cemeteries on a forgotten frontline. The British Salonica Force fought here 1915-18, with allies, to keep Bulgaria at bay. The magnificent Doiran Memorial overlooks the battlefield and commemorates the 11000 British soldiers who died here.

A pleasure, alongside General Schniederhan of the German Wargraves Commission, to visit Zeebrugge cemetery where UK and German WW1 casualties rest peacefully together. Then to sea for a service of remembrance over the recently found wrecks of the Submarines U5 and UC14. @CWGC

@TomSharpe134 Midway through a S’lant deployment in 1997 the programme changed and, on completion of the patrol, we had to head to San Francisco for a 10day visit - v tough. We left Mare Harbour, in a gale, playing ‘If you are going to San Francisco!’ over UD broadcast to a sullen CBFFI.
