Interview with Tara Pender, whose father, PJ, from Tullamore, was one of 123 men killed in the Alexander Kielland Disaster in 1980.
The most important piece I've worked on. The campaign needs publicity, so RTs and shares would be appreciated.
Whether you think today or 1982 is Offaly’s greatest sporting moment, what’s most remarkable is that neither would have happened without the Lowrys.

Offaly finally win their first All-Ireland under-20 hurling title to complete the set of minor, under-20/21 and senior in both codes, just the third county to achieve this after Cork and Galway, and by far smallest.
Our great little county. 💚🤍💛
I was going to suggest that the Cavan-Dublin game be played in Breffni but then thought no, that’d be ridiculous. Sure you couldn’t play a game of that magnitude at a team’s home ground...
#GAA
Croke Park double headers… 🙄
How much better would something like this be:
Dublin-Galway in Thurles
Kerry-Derry in Portlaoise
Louth-Donegal in Clones
Roscommon-Armagh in Cavan
If Shane Lowry keeps this up it’ll definitely be Offaly’s greatest sporting moment since the under-20 hurlers beat Dublin a few weeks ago.

I haven’t seen a single admonishment of Billy Burns on my timeline since the Ireland game ended.
But I’ve seen any amount of opportunists telling people to take it easy on him, all in the name of getting retweets and likes. 🙄
Mayo ladies footballers taking offence to a player being told she was ‘lazy’ having been left out of the team. So what? If that’s what the manager genuinely thought, how else should he articulate it? Just get on with it for God’s sake.
Amazingly, the Dublin-Monaghan game will take place 100 years to the day since their previous All-Ireland semi-final meeting.
That 1922 semi-final was played on July 15, 1923.

Member of the Kildare minor management team heckling the Offaly penalty taker and they 16 points up. Not the first time it’s happened today either. Lowlife stuff.

Dublin have one away game in Leinster since 1993. They should be sent to Cusack Park to play Westmeath and none of this guff about the size of the ground and lack of seats for season ticket holders should be entertained.
#GAA
Beautiful irony in John Costello bemoaning Dublin's cut in funding while signing off his report by thanking commercial partners 'including O’Neills, Intersport Elverys, Britvic, Bytex and Peugeot who all provide valuable support to Dublin GAA'.
I'd say they'll survive, somehow.
Tomás Ó Sé will play in his 15th All-Ireland final on March 17.
Previously:
- 10 for Kerry seniors (including replay in 2000).
- 2 for Kerry under-21s.
- 1 for Kerry minors.
- 1 for An Gaeltacht.
#GAA
Funny how a Dublin-Cork All-Ireland hurling quarter-final can be fixed for Thurles last year but a football one can't. It's not like capacity is the issue anymore.

Would Laois’s performance today have been enough to beat Waterford? Quite possibly. Yet Waterford are safeguarded from relegation next year in a way that Laois aren’t. Great little set up.

Duff passes up yet another opportunity to have a go at the FAI and instead turns on the fans. Didn’t need to be asked twice to unload on the GAA last year though. 🤔 🦕

1/35 Long thread on John Horan’s sit-down with journalists in Scotstown yesterday.
Access to JH for media has been far less than any

president in my experience. I think yesterday was just the third time that I personally had opportunity to question him since he took office.
Galway were moaning for years about having no home games after joining Leinster, supporters having to travel all the time, etc.
Just 9,621 at Pearse Stadium today against their main provincial rivals. Obviously Kilkenny didn’t travel in huge numbers either.
#GAA
So Cork beat Laois by 14 points and are into the last eight, yet they’re not assured of their place in next year’s qualifiers under the tier two proposals and Laois are.
Why would any right-thinking congress delegate vote for that?

Cian O'Neill very strong on the fact that Kildare will be togging out in Newbridge on Saturday evening Six-One news. He's dead right. Fair play to Kildare for not budging so far. Keep it up.

Average margin between Clare and Kerry in Ennis over the last 10 years: 5.8 points.
In Killarney: 16 points.
Imagine if Munster Council sent Clare to Killarney every time, similar to what the Leinster Council do with Dublin in Croke Park?

To put some perspective on Offaly's crushing disappointment: Seán Finn, Cian Lynch, Barry Nash, Peter Casey, Seamus Flanagan, Tom Morrissey, Kyle Hayes and Conor Boylan all lost an All-Ireland minor final. Ultimately, it didn't do them any harm at U21 and senior level.

Lot of condescending guff around Offaly playing Cork this week. With a few lads gone on holiday, they still gave them a better game than Tipperary did.

Kerry minor hurlers lost their three Leinster group games to Wexford, Offaly and Dublin by a combined 57 points.
But sure at least the young lads endure extra long bus journeys home to stew over the defeats and Munster’s ‘big five’ aren’t inconvenienced by having to play them.
Offaly haven’t won a Leinster final in Portlaoise without a

man with a mullet getting man of the match since the under-21 hurling victory over Kilkenny in 2000.

To put a bit more context on this:
Waterford 2010 - first Munster title in three years.
Clare 2013 - first All-Ireland in 16 years.
Clare 2016 - first league title in 38 years.
Wexford 2019 - first Leinster title in 15 years.
Love him or hate him, have to hand it to Davy.
Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold both did media yesterday, played well today.
Dublin don’t allow their players to do any media for at least seven days before a game. Made all the difference in the last few minutes against Louth.

Brian and Ken Hogan become the first father-son combination to win hurling All Stars in the same position. It's happened three times before in football with Pat and Paddy Reynolds, Dermot Earley senior and junior and Barney and Dean Rock.

Don’t agree with everything Pat Gilroy is saying but he’s dead right about dud county board officers. Look at some of the jokers running a number of counties, including my own, for years. Money matters but if I could have the money or someone like John Costello, I’d take JC.

The

created a championship format that essentially allows the top nine hurling counties to pull the ladder up after them.
Now they’re giving this bastardised nonsense full backing in a doomed quest to grow hurling abroad when they’ve failed woefully to grow it at home.
Leinster semi-final double header at Croke Park on April 28… 🙄
Everything is wrong about that.
Everything is right about splitting those games and playing them in Tullamore and Portlaoise.
I’ll probably be saying the same thing this time next year.

Lots to admire about

but on the whole I have to say I was a little underwhelmed by the series. In particular, I find it astonishing that there were only a couple of token sentences at the end about the fact that two-thirds of Ireland is a hurling wasteland.

So it’s Offaly v Tipperary in the All-Ireland under-20 final at Nowlan Park on Saturday week. Should be a great occasion.
Here’s hoping the ref is up to it this time. Offaly suffered as a result of weak refereeing in last year’s final and the minor final the year before.
#GAA
Here’s hoping that other captains follow the lead of Shelmaliers’ Simon Donohoe in ditching the three cheers for the losers tradition. It’s such hollow, patronising nonsense.

There have been a lot of skelpings in the hurling championship now, but no great outcry. Any sort of one-sided game in football though and the reflex is to call for a tiered championship - every time.
Difference in commentary and punditry between the two codes is stark.

What an incredibly mature interview from such a talented young man.
Some say that Offaly need to stop looking back but our past is what sets us apart from so many counties. Cormac has shown how it can still be used to inspire players who weren’t even born when we were successful
Offaly have reached both Leinster minor finals in the same year for the first time since 1989, when they won the provincial double and went on to reach both All-Ireland finals, beating Clare in the hurling, losing to Derry in the football.
