My grandfather, Colman Williams.
Colman was only 29 years old when he was killed in a train accident... except it was not an accident.
Winning all the money while playing poker on a moving train, can be very dangerous.

All the people standing
free in a silent place
a great field
surrounded by trees
endless trees
green to the horizon
no one afraid
sun rising
shadows disappearing
scars seen as yesterday

the end of all wars

he never left her
in his mind
thousands of miles
separate
his addiction to solitude
like a birdless sky
thoughts of her touch
keeping him alive
suffering recluse
malnourished
he finally made the journey
back to her
gravestone in the spotlight of the sun.

I never thought about growing old.

Dirt in my nostrils

stones covering my legs

but I will get up
as the bombs fall
on the cities and countrysides

The Grind
Losing
yourself
in the rush unwillingly
crowd carried
trying not to panic
another day
same
insane
world
coping
by pretending
this is how it is
finally
pushing
back
too late
bumping into something
you've felt
too many times
the grind
the irreversible grind.

saw

we had ideas and even visions

nothing like the slap and roar of the end

sea and sky no longer blue

mumbling on
plains of smoldering
stumps
far city
smoking ruins
river full
boiling ash
burnt boots
hanging rags
coughing hoarse
chewing blood
you survived the blast
doomsday bomb
searching miles
no woman to touch
no holy house
no sacred word.
