In 1906, an election was held on whether or not Pittsburg would annex the neighboring city of Allegheny. While the majority of Allegheny citizens rejected the annexation, Pittsburg’s larger population led to Annexation winning, as it won the total vote of the combined cities.

Previously, Pennsylvania law stated that in order for annexation to happen, a majority in both municipalities would have to agree to annexation. In 1906, this law was changed so that as long as a majority of total votes won, annexation would happen.

Residents of Allegheny tried to fight this with several court battles, even ending up at the Supreme Court with Hunter v. City of Pittsburgh. The court ultimately ruled that they had no jurisdiction over Pennsylvania’s law. Allegheny joined Pittsburgh in 1907.

Behold, the 1964 Presidential Election in Southwestern Pennsylvania. LBJ obliterated Goldwater to smithereens here, winning everything but affluent suburbs and scattered rurals. This is the bluest this region has ever been in history, and likely the bluest it ever will be.

This poll seems to show Biden winning urban voters in Erie, working class voters in Sharon/Farrell, evangelical conservatives in Grove City, ancestors of oil barons in Titusville, and hunters in Tionesta. The tent has never been so big.

New @SusquehannaPR poll of PA is out! POTUS toplines as follows. 🔵 Biden: 50% 🔴 Trump: 45% First time Biden has cracked 50% in a PA poll recently. Regional distributions as follows - you can see why this is the case - even slight erosions in Philly + rurals can't match SEPA.

Behold - The 1936 Election in Youngstown, Ohio. FDR’s New Deal was extremely popular in the city as it benefited thousands of workers, many of whom were immigrants, who in turn rallied behind Roosevelt and the Democratic Party.

Behold - The 1988 Election in Beaver County. Beaver County is a mix of urban, suburban, and rural communities and was at one point one of the most Democratic counties in the commonwealth. In 1988 it was only 2~ points away from being more Democratic than Philadelphia.
