This trick should be shared for stylized art imo. A lot of people struggle with this kind of detail. This method is clean and fast and most importantly you have control over it, can fade parts with morph target etc. It's basically inner glow from photoshop #zbrush

Speaking of bent planes, here's an other easy tip. "spherize your rocks". Most people just planar cut every face, giving it a very chiseled/mechanical feel. A simple trick for more wonkiness/playfulness and to make the faces read better with lighting is to add a spherize deformer

I realize I hate drawing bed sheets in pixel art, so I setup an iso camera in zbrush and do them with cloth sim lol. I make 2 renders, one for the shading where I then use a posterize in photoshop for the shading and one that gives me all the normal map. #pixelart @gamedev

Lighting is the most powerful tool in games, before models and texture. Terrible art with great lighting will always look better than great art with terrible lighting. People sometimes really underestimate how much of an impact light makes on your game, especially in Indy games.

"bent-plane" is something I introduced back on heroes because I was never quite happy with spheres & planes to showcase tillable work. Imo it's a great balance! It's less abstract than a sphere (more camera context) and not as flat as a plane, showing more volume and roughness.

an other quick tip, how to make clean edge damage. Hope that’s useful for some ppl who struggle with that. dam standard or any brush to create the initial dip > smooth to control where my planar will hit > planar cut to..cut > planar with alt to clean up > smooth sharpen edges

Cthulhu shrine. Probably not a good idea to make an offering. Just an example of what you can do if you want to make concept arts to convey an idea without spending too much time on it. You can use a BPR render and just have fun adding brush strokes on top.

Probably my most frustrating issue when I sculpt is the "edge bending" problem. You draw a line and when your line gets close to an edge, the line just bends on it, making it really hard to just have clean lines flowing all along, anybody knows a way to fix this? #AskZBrush

I usually just sculpt that stuff but recently experimenting with ways to create bevels from masks selections, so far no "one push button". This is a mask>polished polygroup>ctrl+shift extrude (for polygroup thickness) and then orb pinch (no bump) and alt moves. Not ideal but ok

@guylygon for rest areas, personally I use the 70-30% rule most of the time. The idea is that 30% percent is filled with the main focus and details, and the remaining 70 percent is rest area, meaning surfaces with very low to none eye catching detail. Details are thoughtfully placed.

QRT render clay? I pretty much only use this matcap from my gumroad to sculp and render all my art. I just like how simple and clean it is, how it highlights cavities and edges just the right amount for my taste, to highlight the sculpt but also it's imperfections as I sculpt.

need some quick dirt for a pot? or want to make dirt tiles quickly? It's the kind of abstract texture that feels tricky sometimes in zb but I think this process makes it really easy. I tried to stay simple on the steps but obviously you can play with scale and amount of detail

There's no right way to sculpt stylized, there's just different "right ways". You can have different looks from game to game. There is, however clearly right principles to know (edge thickness, rest areas, implied details etc) Ignoring all of them could lead to the "wrong way".

It's really cool to see the same bathroom I had in 2D, fully converted in 3D (below), with dynamic lights, ssao etc, everything feels so much more grounded and softer. My friend's working on a 16 angle aim for the character while I'm gonna port the whole 2D apartment I had, in 3D

Honestly odyssey was like my biggest hope for blizzard. Talented team, a great idea, the game was still legitimately fun when I left. But it looks like bad decisions after bad decisions spiraled it down. What a waste of talent. I hope my friends at blizz can find a place asap.

I finished all the normals and did a lighting pass for my side project. Can't use sorting layers on my lights cuz it breaks the sprite sorting. So for now the lights affects other rooms or go above the hero etc. Hope you like it #indiedev #gamedev #pixelart #gamedevelopment

I made a set of blocky brushes for my texturing. I really want a "knife brush" texturing style across everything. Mostly details of 2 pixels wide and very large blocks of color variation. Made this ambulance to test them, hopefully I can use the cross of life in pixel art lol

Not sure what palworld says about the game industry. That people don't give a shit about stolen assets (stealing pokemon base meshes and IP/AD) as long as the end product is fun. Or if pokemon has been so lazy for years that they needed a wake up call. Maybe both.

not gonna lie the new path of exile trailer really hurts my eyes. There's no concept of rest areas or player readability which makes it really hard to read what's going on or know where the character is. The rest areas I see are out of bounds, it's like it's reversed lol

for people wondering, it's 3D. Basically using my sprite as a texture in camera mapping on a mesh with custom normals pointing at the camera. It's a complete hack and only works if I keep my camera iso but it works. Just needs some polish on shadows and 3d silhouette.

this is probably the closest thing to what i use to do in zbrush in terms of stylizing shapes with bevels, it’s the right concept: weathering the edges based on corners. Imo if you’re trying to do stylized shapes easily, it’s a no brain.
