Graduate students do SO much for SO little... in what other job are you expected to pay for software that's essential for you to do your work?! However accessible you believe STEM academia to be, it is almost surely less than that. Read @latinodeciencia's whole thread 👇
6) Research softwares - grad students have been paying out of pocket to buy Prism, Matlab, and other software b/c their PI won't pay for it or their department can't afford it. Imagine financing your own research with a $30-$40k yearly stipend on top of high housing costs.
