Since the Canadian gov't made a promise in 2021 to implement a regularization program that would allow more undocumented people to stay in the country, it has actually increased the # of people it's deported each year—and it's cost millions.

Nothing more depressing than waking up to news alerts about mass layoffs at your company.
And yes, I am one of them. Will have more to say later, when I'm not feeling this way.
Props to all the TV journalists covering these convoy protests. As a print-based journalist, I had the luxury of blending in at the protest in Windsor. But I watched as people continuously attacked TV journalists, especially with the CBC, for simply doing their jobs.
There's a hunger for more diverse coverage in Canadian media. For those who choose to criticize the CBC for diversifying its coverage, I urge them to consider what it must be like to feel ignored, underserved and misrepresented by the media for years and years on end.
Some personal/professional news: Excited to share that I'm now a digital writer/producer

! Happy to join this team and tell stories from across the country😌

I'm very excited to share that today is my first day at
@CdnPressNews
in Toronto! It feels great to learn from so many talented journalists and to be back in my home city. 😌
Signing off on my last day at
@CdnPressNews
. I'm so grateful for the tiny but mighty Ontario bureau team for making a year of reporting through really tough times not just bearable, but also fun and exciting. Will miss the wild wire! -NNZ ♥️
Just realized today marks one year since I moved to Halifax. Last year, I packed up my belongings, stuffed my car and drove from Saint John, NB to an empty apartment where I'd be stuck for two weeks in mandatory quarantine. It's been quite the year, but I'm grateful to be here 😌
Today is my last day
@chronicleherald
and last week in Nova Scotia. Despite moving here in March 2020, just as COVID hit, I couldn't have asked for a better place to be this past year and a half. And it's been such a pleasure working alongside so many talented journalists.
In Ontario, we've been told by experts to wear higher grade masks amid this Omicron wave. I purchased some KN95 masks today -- they were not cheap. Time and time again, this pandemic reminds us the sad truth that money puts us in a better position to stay safe and healthy.
At one of her final media availabilities this election campaign,
@AndreaHorwath
says Ontarians deserve a leader who shows up and answers tough questions. She’s asking people to vote for the NDP, saying the party “will work for you.”

In non-pandemic news, I have some exciting personal/professional news to share. This is my last day
@TJProvincial
as I’ll be taking on a new job as a newcomer reporter
@chronicleherald
in Halifax on March 30.
I don't wanna jinx it, but 2021 is off to a great start. My mom, a registered nurse in Toronto, got her first vaccine today. Here's to more vaccinations this year!!!

Happy to report that my friends' cat, which ran off into the wilderness at the Bruce Peninsula National Park in late May, is alive and well! And a park ranger finally caught her this week!
Here's how the whole story unfolded (a thread):
Wow. Thank you so much,
@atlanticJawards
.
I feel grateful to have won this award for a feature I wrote about a refugee claimant working on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic. This award honours her.
I feel this on a spiritual level. Reporting on racism is important, yes, but when you yourself have faced racism throughout your time in Canada and receive racist comments on your stories or emails that hurt your brain, it can feel quite daunting. But we just keep on keepin' on.
Disappointed to see Canadian journalism take another big blow because, once again, business interests/profits are being deemed more important than actual substance.
Super stoked to share that after about half a year spent reporting for
@TJProvincial
(alongside some of the best in the biz), I will now be putting on a new hat as
@TJGreaterSJ
's business reporter! Below are just a few stories I had the chance to tell as a news reporter.
Hard to have an easy mind as a non-white journalist when racist people reply to your stories that have nothing to do with race but make them about race and say things like "any trouble races should be deported."
And these journalists were still interviewing the protesters and giving them the chance to express their views. Tell me how that is "fake news" or "biased media."
Denise Balkissoon (
@balkissoon
) is an editor extraordinaire currently with The Narwhal. She has worked for legacy media and started her own thing, and won many awards along the way. She really wants to help mid-career racialized journalists who are unsure of what's next.
Some guy that I liked in high school told me that if I pursued journalism, I would end up homeless (I stopped liking him thereafter). I've been working in the field since graduating from journalism school and I do in fact have a roof over my head, which I pay for myself! :~)
The situation in Windsor has gotten a lot more intense throughout the day. Police are making arrests and telling protesters to go home. There are some protesters here saying they will continue their protest. Police are marching towards them, forcing them to back up.
It was especially disturbing watching one female CBC reporter trying to do a live hit while people kept yelling at her "Tell the truth!" The reporter was simply reporting what she was seeing unfold in front of her.
I know the anger and hate towards journalists during these protests have been well documented already, but we need to show the reality of this job for what it is in this current climate, after years of politicians using terms like "fake news" to delegitimize us.
The journalists and staff
@SaltWireNews
are dedicated to their communities, to holding politicians to account, to documenting historic moments in Atlantic Canada. My hope is they'll continue to do that work for as long as possible. Please consider a subscription if you're able.
A reminder that the language that is used by journalists right now is extremely critical.
If you're covering a demonstration, consider asking the organizers what the purpose of it is. Don't assume. There are more humans who want peace right now than humans who want war.
Earlier we reported on some of the pro-Palestinian demonstrations at the weekend.We spoke about “several demonstrations across Britain during which people voiced their backing for Hamas”.
We accept this was poorly phrased and was a misleading description of the demonstrations.
@ddentremo
When I lived in Saint John, New Brunswick, my friends and family kept calling it "St. John's" so this kind of scenario was one of my worst fears.
Theodore Tugboat was taking in the stunning sunset on the Halifax waterfront last night.
This morning, we bid the beloved Theo farewell, as he heads off to Hamilton. Ta ta for now. 👋
I don't wanna jinx it, but 2021 is off to a great start. My mom, a registered nurse in Toronto, got her first vaccine today. Here's to more vaccinations this year!!!
Visiting New Brunswick this past weekend with my east coast journo pals was a treat. And yes, I am coining the phrase "it's always sunny in new brunny." 🌞🌞🌞
I have so much to say, but I also am at a loss of words.
For now, I just want to emphasize that people who work in this industry care about their work, about their impact. And my hope is we will figure out how to do journalism sustainably in this country sooner than later..
I have now spent two months in this lovely province (after moving during the pandemic, yikes). So much has happened since I got here, but through it all, I've learned how strong, kindhearted and welcoming Nova Scotians are. Thanks for adopting me!!! 💙
You’ve been invited to a meeting with your boss and a human resources representative. It comes at a time of uncertainty in your workplace. The writing is on the wall — you’re about to be laid off.
What do you do?
My latest for

My mom is an ER nurse in Toronto toughing this out. I'm so appreciative of her and all other health care professionals working extra hard during these uncertain times.
88 weeks ago,
@fallonhewitt_
and I set up shop in our home offices for the first time. Although we're not working together anymore, we've both been working from home ever since. It's wild to think it's been *88* weeks of this. And we're both still covering COVID-19...
It's been just over a week since the Bell layoffs. I want to thank everyone for their kind messages & support the last few days, but also from day one when I started my journalism career. The tight-knit community of Canadian journos is what's kept me going all these years.
Before I leave, I want to stress how important local journalism is. I've worked at two daily newspapers now and seen firsthand the important and difficult work that local journalists do to keep their communities informed. Please continue to support them in this pursuit.
Looking forward to the day we decide to nationalize our systems for health cards, driver's licences, etc. in Canada. Moving between provinces has proved to be a paperwork and financial headache 🙃
I've been thinking of David Gass a lot lately. Two years ago, I was hit by a truck turning left to get to a Tim Hortons. I was in a car, so I had some buffer to keep me relatively safe. But I know that not everyone gets to be so lucky. Drive safe, Halifax
Today is my last day as an intern
@cbcasithappens
so I thought I'd share the story of Nigel the gannet that I produced... probably the most tragic but touching story I've worked on. Shout out to

Nothing beats an airport security officer in Edmonton telling you that there's a good amount of "inorganic material" in your lamb plushie, but that they'll let you through "although some other airports might not." So far, no trouble at the Toronto and Vancouver intl airports 🙃🙂
A Syrian refugee is now giving back to the Halifax community that supported him when he arrived in the city two months ago.
‘I wanted to stand up’: Syrian refugee gives back to Nova Scotians during pandemic:
I took this photo on April 20, 2020, right after the Nova Scotia mass shooting. It was already such a difficult time with the start of COVID-19, but when this stunning sunset appeared, it felt like everyone in the province could mourn and reflect together.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Kamal Al-Solaylee lately. My mag writing & arts reporting prof and my biggest mentor.
@KamalAlSolaylee
has my support, and that of my peers. We’re gonna say some stuff about him in this thread, and any other current/former students can join in too!!

You got what you deserved. All of the media in this country deserve to be unemployed. Also, since you appear to love Palestine so much, go there. Get the fuck out of 🇨🇦 & leave.
