Finally got around to writing an in-depth (but informal) case study of what a disaster
@skiffprivacy
's shutdown was, why they probably got acquired, and what they could have done better.
This is so incorrect and baffling that I don't even know what to say. It's one thing to be proud of what you built, it's quite another to shit on everyone else working day and night to "make privacy mainstream".
No, Skiff wasn't the only (or even the top 100) app to "make
I’m proud of the number of gmail and outlook users we were able to convert.The fact is that none of the privacy apps today outside of

has brought privacy to the mainstream.
Alhamdulillah!
Today we officially cross 100,000 signed up users! We could not be more proud (and grateful) for reaching this incredible milestone!
Thank you for trusting us, for supporting us, and for being a part of our journey!
Insane response after v3 release:
- 5k+ views on the blog post (organic)
- 13k+ views on the website
- 4k+ desktop app downloads
- 30%+ increase in sign ups
- 50%+ increase in sales
And the activity on our social channels has been nothing short of amazing! Alhamdulillah!
The problem with migrating from one email service to another isn't the product, or the emails, or the inbox. It's the email address itself.
You have to go to every service where you used that email address and change it. That's the real pain.
So what's the solution?

🚀Exciting News!
#Notesnook
V3 will add that special personalized touch to your note taking experience with User profiles!
Of course your picture and name will be end to end encrypted just like everything else in Notesnook and only visible to you 😎
A lot of people are scared that Notesnook is run by only 3 people, and therefore it cannot be trusted.
Putting aside the fact that almost every "big" tech you see out there with thousands of employees, was once comprised of less than 5 people. According to that statistic we are
🚨 v2.5.3 is here!
⚡️HIGHLIGHTS⚡️
1. Native encryption on desktop app
2. New UI for Settings on desktop/web
3. Automatic backups disabled by default
4. 🚨 Encrypted backups for free & Pro users!
Read full details here:
v3 statistics:
- 494 commits
- 870 files changed
- 290k lines added
- 116k lines removed
- 30+ issues closing (that number will change as more house keeping is done)
If you exclude auto generated files (lockfiles, patches etc.) then the diff stands at 50k lines added and 30k
v3 is progressing faster than ever. We have just finished adding tabs to the editor on all platforms.
- at rest encryption is done on mobile + custom pin for app lock
- table of contents is also done on mobile
The only thing left is...NOTE LINKING!
Congratulations
@StandardNotes
! Even though this was an unfair "race", I am glad a truly private notes app took the trophy at the end. Privacy for the win! ✊
Jokes aside, here's an update for you guys:
We have finished merging all the features into the beta branch. That's HUGE because now its just bug fixing, testing, and more bug "crushing".
We'll be launching the public v3 beta tomorrow or the day after. As always, stay tuned! 😁
So long
@skiffprivacy
!
I am not an affected user but I have experienced the MYKI acquisition. It was one of the most frustrating things to go around in search of an alternative, especially when MYKI just worked. I am sure there are many Skiff users who feel the same.
I still
Note linking is finally done! 🤩
We added support for:
1. Direct links between notes
2. Linking to a specific block inside a note
A block can be anything like a heading, paragraph, table, or a codeblock.
New themes are available in the Notesnook app as soon as they are merged into our Github repo. We already have two new themes in Notesnook.
- Notesnook Blue
- Proton Carbon
And so many other themes are coming too 😉
With v3 we are overhauling our current syncing logic and moving away from detecting changed notes using timestamps. The result is far more reliable sync with almost 0 chance of data not syncing.
Will share an in depth explanation soon.
Notesnook has crossed 6k stars on GitHub!
Thank you everyone for your support and love!
(If you haven't stared the repo, take a minute and do it now: )
v2.6.2 is here!
🔁 Introducing Sync v2
- Upto 10 times faster
- Much more reliable
🪲Many, many bug fixes
- Editor on mobile should work much better
- Fixed many pasting issues
- Theming has also gotten a refresh with new colors

Sneak peak at stuff we plan on adding in v3. Most of these are already implemented on one platform or another, and a few need further polishing but this should be exciting!
Since this tweet, we have added ~300 more commits. That's 300 commits in 10 days.
We'll release 1 more v3 beta version tomorrow and then we'll enter RC (release candidate) stage. We don't want to rush and ruin everything especially now that things are looking quite good.
v3 statistics:
- 494 commits
- 870 files changed
- 290k lines added
- 116k lines removed
- 30+ issues closing (that number will change as more house keeping is done)

Ramadan Mubarak everyone! May Allah give us all tawfeeq to avail every second of this blessed month.
Notesnook development pace will, InshaAllah, not be affected during this month. v3 is still our primary focus.
Unfortunately, not an April Fool's joke after all.
I'll say it again, if they don't e2e encrypt your data, don't trust them. Doesn't matter what or who they are. Your data is your data.
This is shocking.
Facebook gave Netflix all your private messages on Messenger in exchange for all your watch history, while Netflix paid them $100M+ for ads.
Meta will sell your data at a heartbeat for profit.
HUGE privacy improvements when applying for edu discount:
1. Apply using only your edu email address (no need for even the name)
2. Only your email address is persisted once verification is complete no matter how you apply.
We are always working to improve the privacy of all
v2.5.0 is here!
🌟 Here's what's new: 🌟
1. Attachment previews
2. New attachment manager
3. Ability to download all your attachments
4. Assign tags to notes in bulk
5. Better UX for printing notes

Who knows how much notes, files, images & other stuff you might have? Why limit yourself.
Notesnook offers truly unlimited storage. Take a look at how other apps compare:
We never have and never will see
@StandardNotes
as a competitor. Saying this to clear up any misconceptions that there is a fued between SN and NN. There is not. There is no SN vs NN and should never be.
Let me explain.
There was a time Notesnook wasn't even in the conversation.
Fast forward to now and 60K+ users have encrypted over 1 million notes using Notesnook.
That's not a small thing.
Thank you for joining us on this journey!
At rest encryption working on the web app via sqlite3-multiple-ciphers!
🤯🤯🤯
What this means: app lock + at rest encryption is coming on ALL platforms with the SAME underlying implementation.
That is the difference.
In case of Notesnook, we CAN'T snoop and we CAN'T sell your data because we simply don't have access to it. No customer support interaction can give us this access either.
That's why zero knowledge encryption matters.
@skiffprivacy
repos are gone. This is concerning. What's the hurry? If there is a 6-month shut down window, why remove the repos before that? Every Skiff user should migrate IMMEDIATELY. Who knows what's happening with user data behind the scenes...
This is not a good move.
Alhamdulillah!
Notesnook has crossed the 50K registered users milestone! Huge congratulations to the NN team and thank you for everyone, the OGs, the early adopters, the beta testers for supporting us.
2023 is going to be about YOU.
Here's an honest question: if malware like ABP is included in the "ad blockers" section, and tracker ridden Authy also gets a spot, why not include Google Chrome & WhatsApp in the browsers and chat apps section? What about Gmail?
What was the point of this survey again?
Twilio isn't exactly known for their privacy. Its the same as using Google Authenticator or M$ Authenticator.
If anyone is looking for a "worthy" Authenticator App, try
@RaivoOTP
or Aegis. Both are free.
As
@PrivacyMatters
speculated, Authy sends too much analytics for an authenticator app. It associates analytics with the user's ID, which is tied to phone number and email. The analytics include the issuer name of each scanned QR code. Try to use a different
#2FA
app.

Did you know in the beginning (until we passed 25k users) NN was hosted on a single 1 CPU, 2 GB RAM server. (The database was on a separate server, for obvious reasons).
Yeah, I am not joking. This server had everything else on it as well.
We are currently stress testing NN to support handling of huge amounts of data.
The basic idea is to remove all limits & make NN perform well even with huge workloads. To that end, we are going to optimize:
🔁 Sync (Sync v2 supports syncing unlimited amounts of data to & from)
Sync server open sourcing update!
All the necessary projects have been migrated to the repository. The GitHub repo will be made public after one last review of everything to make sure we don't make any mistakes.

@draculatheme
in Notesnook 🎉 soon you will be able to theme Notesnook the way you wish. 🎨
Different sections of the app like Sidebar/Lists/Editor/Popups/StatusBar/ContextMenu etc will be seperatly themable.
Below you can see two slight variations of Dracula theme.
@amplenote
just came across this...I am not sure what to call it. You are seriously arguing against open source software in a security argument? Seriously!
Let's rip this nonsense apart piece by piece:
> open source note apps require you to "just trust them,"
No, they don't.
This is why we cannot have nice things for free.
Notesnook Monographs has been subject to severe spam & abuse causing our main domain to be flagged. We are temporarily taking Monographs down until we figure out how to prevent the spam & abuse.
We are
It's funny how Notesnook still beats Evernote & other apps in pricing even after they put a 40 - 50% off discount. 🤣
Conclusion: Get Notesnook Pro instead of wasting money with Evernote.
