My second fastest ever marathon and an 8 minute course PB: 3.23.12 😊.
Had to stop to go to the loo after a couple of miles as my post-laparoscopy bladder struggles!
But I loved it all and smiled the whole way, somehow managing an identical time for the 1st and 2nd halves.
Today, I won a race - the Brecon Canal 10 mile. It was only a small race, there weren’t many people, but it doesn’t happen very often and it cheered up my week. 😊
Llandough hospital said I can have a break from the cancer drugs after the side effects all got too much midweek.
25 years ago I was working in a chip shop in Llanelli, about to get my A Level results from
@ColegSirGar
. Your results don’t define the rest of your life. I’ve only ever used A Level Chemistry knowledge in pub quizzes. “Show up, work hard, be nice” opens a lot of doors.
It was good news on the hospital results so it’s on to radiotherapy (which is more complicated than I naively thought) once I’ve recovered a bit more. Phew!
Having cancer surgery six and a half weeks before a race is far from ideal build up. Over the moon with around 1.38.30 in today’s Barcelona HM.😊
Amazing race, perfect conditions. Just need to lose 2.30 for a Wales Masters time (though cancer op
#2
on Friday is added hurdle).😳
All done! They found stuff, fixed it, and hopefully I can get better from here. Everyone has been so lovely and kind. They said I was one of the happiest patients they’ve had. I’m great with general anaesthetics, me.
Thanks for everyone’s positive thoughts and good wishes. 😊
Fourteen years ago we were adopted by this small black cat. Happy anniversary, Millie. She’s an excellent cwtcher. We are all fans of sleep too! Cheers
@CatsProtection
for bringing us together!
She’s purring in her sleep on my lap and she’s so lovely and warm.
I can’t believe she’s 17 and getting ready for her 16th Xmas with us.
Adopting Millie from
@CatsProtection
is one of the best things we ever did
@jon_belcher
.
My best
@JohnHartson10
Cymraeg: “hollol shattered”! But it’s genuinely people like John whose Welsh made me think I could have a go. And people like
@_LowriMorgan
who are so lovely and supportive if you’re brave enough to try. Diolch, Lowri.
Finally broke the HM PB I set in Cardiff in 2016. It might only be 3 seconds quicker but those 3 seconds really matter to me.
Tough conditions because it was so windy.
So that’s the set: PBs at every distance after cancer.
Chuffed! 😊
Congratulations to all those people I’ve never met & never will who are getting married this weekend, but in particular those who don’t expect me to pick up some of the tab.
In all of these photos, I knew I had cancer but almost no-one else did. And they were the best times over the past couple of months because just for a short while, I could pretend everything was normal.
To be entirely honest, not the result I was hoping for in today’s Barry 40 but the wind was stubbornly strong the whole time. Really started to feel that after 30 miles but I kept going and I’m not disappointed with 5.46.23 and 2nd lady. 40 miles is a long way!
Chuffed to bits to announce that as of 19 September, I’ll be joining the fantastic
@HelenaHerklots
and the amazing team over at
@talkolderpeople
as Director of Policy. 😊
Very excited to to get going in the new role.
I’ve had a pretty tough week:
Finally got my hospital results on Tuesday, hoping to find out when I can start radiotherapy. Good news is that the cancer hasn’t spread to my lymph nodes. But the consultant and staff during other tests had always been really confident it hadn’t.
It’s
@LondonMarathon
weekend, I’ll be at the start line for the first time in 5 years. A lot has happened since 2019!
This year I’m fundraising for three different charities.
The younger staff caught up in US Capitol riots last week knew to turn the lights out, hide, be silent etc because they learnt it in school in prep for how to manage if a high school shooting took place.
Let that sink in for a moment.
WTAF???
3.30.30 at Frankfurt Marathon. Just unseasonably hot - 22 degrees in the second half rather than about 8 or 9! Massive thanks to
@jon_belcher
for generally being amazing support.
15 years ago we were adopted by this small black cat via
@CatsProtection
. To celebrate, this morning she has spewed a hairball on
@jon_belcher
’s trainers. Happy anniversary, Millie. We love you. And the purr snores. 💕
First and probably only marathon of 2023 for me tomorrow - Chester.
I’ve only run for the Wales Masters team once before (last July) and I felt such an impostor and so nervous that I hardly told anyone until afterwards but it actually went pretty well.
5 min PB at today’s
@NewportWales262
- 3.23.31. Chuffed to bits. Was like a proper home run with so much
@LliswerryRunner
support on the course. Massive thanks to
@JoshGriffRun
for planning my training! PBs at most distances since February. 😊
Chap in the sea on Aberavon beach this afternoon with “Tiffany” tattooed under left shoulder.
Really wanted to go up to him and say “I think we’re alone now” but thought he might be too young to get the reference and then I would just seem really weird….
Tomorrow I have to go to Llandough hospital for my 18 month follow up cancer screenings and while there’s nothing to suggest it’s back, I’m completely panicked about the whole thing.
Cake and latte distraction and some running has been helpful.
Did a race last night; won my age category; gave out brownies and Jaffa Cakes. Normal service is resumed. Apart from the age category win. That’s still a cracking surprise! 😂
Despite irritating sciatica and a chest infection, I finished Barry 40 in 5.54.03 today. Thanks loads to
@jon_belcher
and everyone who came to support me. No other Welsh women entered so I get to stay Wales ultramarathon champion for another year.
I’m part of
@LondonMarathon
trial to reduce plastic kit bags by providing capes instead. Just tried mine on and it’s lush! Going to be as snug as a slug in a mug on the way to the start!
#LondonMarathon2019
I am so fed up of the accusations of ivory towers about university humanities degrees and research. Art, music, culture, history are a key part of people’s lives. Should we really stop people studying these fields or narrow them down so they’re only options for the elite?
Hi
@huwthomas_Wales
- it’s my birthday. If you could track down the idiots who snapped the Wellfield Road trees and arrange a public flogging for later, that’d be great. Should have finished
@TeamThie
circuits not long after 6.30 and I know a fair bit about medieval torture...Ta.
Been a bit miserable at times this week - had confirmation letter that I have to back to Velindre next week and I really don’t want to go - but we decided to try
@CosmestonP
for 1st time today and it was brilliant. Lovely course and volunteers. Cheers for photos Abyd Quinn Aziz😊
The Barry 40: a self-indulgent thread, but I think you can do that after a 40 mile race. 😊
First up, my 5.43.10 time is nearly 10.30 minutes quicker than my previous best efforts. And I felt much better all the way round.
Huge thanks for everyone’s support, especially everyone who’s sponsored me for
@TrussellTrust
. I will thank you all properly, probably tomorrow as I’ve taken the day off. But for now, the Barry 40 is done. I got a PB by over 10 minutes. 😊
And my feet hate me!
If there are over 40 participants at a meeting you’ve organised and you’re wondering if individual introductions are a good idea:
They aren’t.
Thank you.
Been really lucky to have consultants who aren’t risk averse and have said it’s ok to keep running.
But special mention to the little girl I walked past near a primary school on my way home from a test jog this morning, who said I looked like I’d be really good at sports day. 😂
Having a pretty miserable time at the moment, which I won’t go into, but it was lovely to go back to
@BrynBachparkrun
this morning and run my quickest time since the second cancer op. Great course and cracking volunteers, especially the chap who told me I was on for sub-22. 😊👍
When you suspect you’re going to get beaten by a chap dressed as a giant traffic cone, but you’re having such a good time that you don’t care.
Grinning my way round
@LondonMarathon
and hoping to go back next year.
@Cardiff_Dave
@OllieGoesTwit
@cardiffcouncil
@ILovesTheDiff
You really can’t have anything nice in this country, can you? We saw a similar scheme in Barcelona in February. Streets that had been turned into public spaces. Similar trees. Except no-one trashed it. 😡😡😡
Today I’ve run 25 miles, managed another cold bath and had my first Covid jab (Pfizer). I mean, how excited is every single person I speak to tomorrow going to be when I talk them through all that, including all 25 mile splits??? 😂
Yesterday I won my running club’s Club Ambassador award. It’s an award for representing the club’s values and previous winners are a tough act to follow. I was massively surprised. The award is in memory of one of our club members who died far too young and who was a lovely chap.
Thank goodness the rain eased off a bit. Thanks loads to the volunteers at
@grangemrparkrun
this morning.
Happy with under 30 minutes less than 72 hours post-surgery. (And the consultant absolutely said I only needed 2 days off running so it was fine!)
The “things are definitely looking up” streak continues. Chuffed to get this in the post this morning. I ran the Welsh 10k championships in Caerphilly just 5 days after I finished radiotherapy so this means a lot to me.
Diolch
@WelshAthletics
😊
Big thanks to the photographers at
@grangemrparkrun
last week. I had a great run and really enjoyed it. 😊
Now that I’m definitely better and able to make plans, I’ll be volunteering more regularly at
@tremorfaparkrun
again, starting tomorrow.
See some of you there!
I’m in this photo - it’s last July’s Wales Masters half marathon team. And once this incredibly inconvenient cancer nonsense is out of the way, I’m going to have a bloody good go at making it again.
And if I don’t succeed, it doesn’t matter but I’m going to try!
It’s been a long time since someone was directly horrible to me while I’ve been out running alone. So big thanks to the teenage boy by Roath Park lake who thought he’d impress his mate by suddenly shouting in my face. I hope you learned that won’t scare every woman. Idiot.
Spot on. I was a librarian in Cardiff 2005-08. They’re about so much more than books. Safe spaces for kids to do homework; older people who came in for a chat and to read the papers; places to just browse. And the things you don’t expect - helping people fleeing domestic abuse.
As a kid who was crap at PE, I’m always amazed at how much success is hard work, effort, and showing up, not talent. Still can’t believe I get to keep the
@LliswerryRunner
40 trophy for another year!
Last ever day at
@ColegauCymru
. About to go for a run and debate the mascara/no mascara issue and likelihood of there being some sort of blubbing incident…
Seeing
@DelythJewellAM
say she’ll always share her regional Senedd seat with Steffan Lewis nearly made me cry.
He was a genuinely nice chap, taken far too young.
If you see a woman running alone and you think she could do with some encouragement, leave her be.
If you see a woman running alone and you think she must be attracted to you, leave her be.
Genuinely, just leave us alone to get on with it.
His n hers V45 category winners At today’s Elan Valley 10 mile race! Haven’t been very well this week and found out yesterday I’m probably going to need another op to help with the mobility in my arm (though a long waiting list) so just the boost I needed! 😊
Always have massive imposter syndrome when I get the opportunity to run for Wales (thanks
@WelshAthletics
!) but enjoyed today’s
@Great_Run
Manchester HM. Not an especially quick course so delighted with around 1.35.16 which is within 10 secs of my PB.
Cheers
@PizzaExpress
!
First 5k PB since October 2018 and took 17 seconds off my previous time. Big thanks to
@cardiffparkrun
and the fantastic volunteer team for the bonus NYD event! 😊
Shout out to my new shoes - a Christmas present to myself.
A month ago it was my birthday and I was having such a rubbish time, I couldn’t face opening any cards or presents so I just hid them in the spare room. A month on and everything is better so I’m celebrating on 29 July instead of 29 June.
Starting the day at
@grangemrparkrun
😊
Had a fantastic time at
@lescroupiersrc
CPR race this weekend:
I won! 😊
Thanks to the team for a great event and managing to change some of the routes at short notice. I wouldn’t have run so well without
@jon_belcher
and
@louloubelllle
(who had a pretty good run herself!)
Bore da! It’s a bit soggy here at
@tremorfaparkrun
but I’m ready to welcome you all. This’ll be my last time for a little while as I take a few weeks off to manage the anxiety around my upcoming cancer scans and wait for results but I’ll be back when that’s over. 👍
Be careful what you wish for…
Me, last Sunday during long run: “Hot. Too hot. Why does it have to be so hot?”
Me, this morning during long run: “Wet and windy. Bit cold. Why does it have to be cold, wet and windy?”
Still, 18 miles done, including some into a gale on the barrage
Me.
Smiling.
Crossing the finish line at Chester Marathon, having run a PB.
And at the time, I didn’t even know my friend, Lou, would buy me these amazing biscuits.
Result!
Slightly different spot at
@tremorfaparkrun
for my 100th time as
@parkrunUK
@parkrunCymru
volunteer.
It’s a lovely morning and you still have time to grab your daps and barcode for a 9am start!
It’s almost 2 weeks since my last operation and I feel loads better! Today is even the last day of wearing surgical stockings. I’ve been able to eat normally and I don’t have any stomach pain (other than the stitches and fading bruises from the laparoscopy).
Had a grand day out supporting
@NewportWales262
! Congrats to
@Dan_Nash94
who only went and won the whole thing at the end; to Lizzie Dimond from
@LliswerryRunner
who was first woman; and to everyone else who ran or volunteered. 👍
