Many years ago, while walking the 1000 mile Skeleton Coast with my camels, news reached me that, further north up the coast, the military regime in Nigeria had killed Ken Saro-wiwa, someone decent who had protested against the terrible environmental damage brought about by oil spills in his homeland. As I carried on alone through the desert I thought a lot about this - how inspiring this man had been - to me and so many others in the 1990s - and how I'd lost the chance to meet him. But then...

RIP Sr Majella McCarron, the Irish nun who supported my dad's environmental campaign in the Niger Delta. By preserving the letters Ken Saro-Wiwa wrote to her from prison, she gave valuable insight into his thoughts and helped sustain his legacy. We're eternally grateful to her ❤️
