Many years ago, while walking the 1000 mile Skeleton Coast with my camels, news reached me that, further north up the coast, the military regime in Nigeria had killed Ken Saro-wiwa, someone decent who had protested against the terrible environmental damage brought about by oil spills in his homeland. As I carried on alone through the desert I thought a lot about this - how inspiring this man had been - to me and so many others in the 1990s - and how I'd lost the chance to meet him. But then...
