i often use 2-sided geometry, and the cell shading is pretty subtle. that leads to interiors looking a bit bright i could create new textures with hand-paint "baked lighting" on the inside, but instead i wrote a little 'fake AO' shader applied to a volume #indiedev #gamedev

if you're into "Pixel Art 3D" please try my Blender add-on "Pixel Unwrapper" been using it for a while, and it's at a point where I can just smash "Unwrap" and no longer need manual touch ups! (after adding seams) (also get in touch because I might need help soon )

i always had struggles "dissolving" mesh particles, especially since in this game I try to have no alpha transparency progressive dithering doesn't always look good but i have a new trick and it's great! i just painted a super quick dissolve map in blender 😍 was so easy!

did some more work on my "direct pixel painting" plugin for blender. the uv islands here are laid out and 'pixel-snapped' by the plugin. the goal being to just press a button and start painting 'nice' pixels straight onto the model. #gamedev #indiedev

wrote a little tool to do something like "9 slicing" but for meshes. parts of the mesh are repeated, some are stretched, and some are just moved. needs a bit of prep in Blender, but no geonodes or Houdini is involved, it's all just Unity #gamedev #indiedev

detecting ground types! 🥳 got a smart tip from the forums: instead of calling GetAlphamaps() each frame, or even caching its result. cache a byte array with the dominant terrain layer for each corresponding position! #indiedev #gamedev

If you do anything with Unity Terrains you should check out MicroVerse on the asset store. it's impossible to ever go back to hand painting terrain once you've experienced a non-destructive workflow 🤯

I've seen the cynical view expressed that indies only do pixel games or "retro" games because it's cheaper and easier to produce them, and while I do agree that it's a factor for many of us, I maintain that restrictions encourage creativity.

doing triplanar mapping on the terrain, but instead of *blending* between the three samples, i pick the plane with the highest weight and sample once (because mixing pixels is 🚫) this can lead to the threshold being quite visible, so I added some wigglies based on the y-coord
