Belva Ann Lockwood, a New York native, became the 1st woman to argue a case – a foreclosure matter – before the U.S. Supreme Court, in 1880, a year after being admitted to the Supreme Court bar. Initially denied her law diploma, she lobbied for – & got it – 6 mos later in 1873.
