Long story short, I'm not comfortable posting on this platform anymore with it's incresingly weak moderation. I'll keep this account on lock just to preserve it. If you'd like to keep up with my new work, find me on LinkedIn or artstation. Much love! 🐟
It's done! Koi pond, a personal project made in Unreal. Reminds me of summer days ☀️🦋

Before I did 3D I was a painter. I used to paint/draw every week, since 2009.
Lots of 2D techniques can be translated into better 3D! A thread of old work & advice🧵
Every January I re-draw the same picture, 11 years going. Even though I hardly picked up painting this past year as I have been more focused on 3D, I still had fun working on this :)
The shader museum is done! I have been working on this all waking hours, it's been so much fun, I hope you enjoy it too ✨🌊🌱🐟🧊

It's done! Mill house, my first personal 3D project since graduating. UE3, Max, Painter/Desinger, Zbrush & PS. 🏡✨
Features RVT grass, full stylised water shaders, & optimisation- everything is created by me.

Nothing in games is worth losing sleep over, we're not saving lives. I've been lucky enough for all the studios I worked for, overtime is heavily discouraged. If something needs to be delayed, that's on the producers to plan better not the artists
If you leave an offering, the jelly ghost spirits might come visit in the night ✨🐠
It's done! I had so much fun making the jellies & all the effects, and I hope you all like it too😄

My last project for university, done! Was a blast to work on this coral tunnel & learn Houdini for the first time. Thank you all for your feedback and coming along on this journey with me 💙
Onwards to new things! 👏✨

A lot of places are always looking for tech artists / vfx artists and other niche roles. Everybody wants a senior tech, nobody wants to invest in juniors to get them there. The longer we don't hire juniors the less seniors we will have as an industry.
Hello

Done with work for the year! Going back to personal work in unreal. Switching back after using so much unity is a little confusing ngl! But making it work
Back to fishy project, here's a WIP custom caustic shader 🌊
WIP. Added a lot of tech stuff this week, god rays, moving plants, caustics, water surface. Working on making the fish move now, and revisiting the plants because they're not 100% what I want them to look like 🌱🐠
I've been stalling on talking about this but I think it needs to be said: me and many other devs who worked on Hawken Reborn at DR Studios were left out of the credits because we left before the game released.
WIP! Progress with the pond scene, got a lot of the foliage in & experimenting with SinglerLayerWater for the first time.
Cylinder fish have made a return- also left to do: bridge, waterfalls+vfx & other little animals, fixing foliage & tweaks

Hi twitter! The break I took was good. Been talking to doc & got health sorted. Things should only get better from now.
Here's a new WIP. Project is on hold until I move back to Bristol this Saturday. I bought a new tablet that will make modelling so much easier ✨👏
Small level up, today marks my 1 year in the industry! 🎉😄
Here's a thread of a few random things I learnt along the way, that I would say to my younger self:

"holo fish" - I painted a concept of what I want to do when I enter the production phase of the current artstation challenge. A little Japanese storefront selling holographic fishes
WIP - Soft camera clipping transitions shader, adjusted the hairgrass in this clip too.
Even if I only get to work on this project tiny pieces at a time, having a lot of fun with it 🐟

Today is my official 6 months in the industry, and I'm now a full time employee 🥳 Someday I will share what I'm working on, all I can say it's fun, I've learnt tons and continue to do so!
I wanna go to more game dev socials, but every single one ends up being at a loud bar at 7pm when it's already pitch black outside 😅maybe okay in the summer but it's dangerous any other time of year for a lot of folks including myself
Surface properties. Especially important when making textures & shaders. How shiny is it? How do fuzzy or scratchy surfaces work on a small scale? How should light look though glass? Honey? It'll help make better materials - you can go all out on the details.
I'm 24 today! It's always worth reflecting on good things, so here's a list of things I'm happy I got to do this year:
- Wrote 3 articles/blogs
- Mentored someone for the first time via limit break 💙
- Spoke in front of a lecture hall at SDC about autism, technical art & fish!
AAH I made it on the 30 under 30 list!! 🎉(alongside some AMAZING people!)
Lots of gratitude for being recognized for the work I do for the ASD community, and really appreciate my colleagues as well who put me forward for this 💙 Lets make the game industry a better place
Reminder to students/juniors: you don't need to take ALL feedback onboard. Not all feedback will be valid & useful, or applicable to your situation, art style, or studios you wanna aim for. Any professional who says they have it 100% figured out I would not take feedback from.
Niagara sardines, WPO rockfish, rigged & animated sharks. Based upon the Monterey bay kelp forest aquarium.
Improvements for later - smoother animations, add 1 more plant variety, fish colour variations.
Time to move onto the corridors!
