@Kerry2001 @polyscribe2 My German teacher suggested that a novella, eg Thomas Mann’s Tonio Kröger, is a work of prose fiction characterised by limited numbers of characters, storylines, settings etc. I don’t know if he was right, but it feels more right than definitions that depend on numbers of words.

I just read Dennis Etchison’s The Dog Park walking around the local park as night fell & local people walked their dogs. It’s a great story. I reread it every few years & always forget what happens in it & what it’s about. Actually I think what it’s about changes as I get older.
