Shocking and mind numbing news about
@BrittenSinfonia
who have lost their whole
@ace_national
grant in one cut. Just over 50% of budget. I know we will rise to the challenge but this is a real shock.
A joy to be performing with Benedict Cumberbatch today, his voice is a flexible and beautiful as a Strad cello. And then there was a photo op later…. So happy to meet
@ArmisteadMaupin
and see these two talking 👼🏻👼🏻
Thank you to everyone who has reacted to the news about
@BrittenSinfonia
. As the day has gone on I have become more and more shocked and angry about it, but also more determined to help BS fly free. It’s an astonishing decision against everything they say they are for.

@BerniceKing
I just donated because you are the most lovely person doing everything you can. Pay NO a mind to haters and keep doing your best. So impressed with your work and your whole raison d’etre. Nick

The problem is NOBODY will understand how hard this evening was for the
@BBCSO
mostly because they sounded so utterly gorgeous, relaxed and ON IT. Guys, when we meet drinkies are on me!
Yes, it was news from yesterday but it is NOT yesterday’s news.
@wilfriedzaha
wants Every Child to have music lessons & instruments for free and I agree, as do all the other winners of BBC Young Musician, and many, MANY other people RT

With not a single case of transmission of this virus during a properly distanced concert or theatre or dance event, what could possibly be the reason for the extreme punishment this represents to arts professionals and their loyal audiences? Please do tell me
@OliverDowden
I decided to share the email from Tim Davie to me (and ‘all’, all meaning every winner of BBC Young Musician). There is no doubt that we are still in a real fight for classical music on the BBC.
I’m utterly sick of music and especially music education being seen as an easy target for cuts. It’s not, and such acts are foolhardy and harmful. Save the City of Belfast School of Music - Sign the Petition! via

I shall be celebrating the shiny new letters after my name by going with my love to

I try not to be too demanding here on Twitter, I know how busy you all are, but
@wilfriedzaha
calling for EVERY CHILD to have free instruments and lessons is direct from the gods needs your URGENT attention. Please retweet the fluck out of this. Nick

This is worse than disappointing. Please think again
@GavinWilliamson
. Music is the absolute right of every child, and a massive support to good education. Without the teachers there really is no hope.

A racist Twitter response to
@IsataKm
playing
@BBCProms
made one of my younger daughters- who saw it accidentally over my shoulder- sob uncontrollably. It’s a never-ending battle to keep positive, determined and creative. But we will.
If we get tired and stop screaming about this they will have won and there are clearly some people there that just don’t care. This is whitewash and flannel and completely unacceptable.
@OliverDowden
sort it out.
Huge privilege to be there at
@BBCYoungMus
final. Three completely compelling performers who we will hear about in the future for sure, who delivered so much on the night, given the circumstances. Fascinating how much they had grown and changed in a year... let’s see in 5....
Genuinely delighted to meet

and plucked up courage to bother him for a photo. He says to say hi to everyone! … ps stalking not my normal habit 😱
So happy to be playing my beloved Vaughan-Williams concerto at the

We are thrilled to announce that our Artistic Director,

has been awarded the OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours for services to music. We are sure that his many friends, colleagues and admirers will want to join us in sending our warmest congratulations.

So it seems, after what feels like a head patting email from Tim Davie to all of the BBC Young Musicians via me, that we are FAR from out of the woods with
@BBCSingers
@BBCPhilharmonic
@BBCCO
@BBCSO
so the fight must continue.
I thought you might enjoy the distraction of some live music with

and me from

tomorrow. Live on

and in HD video from the hall.
Bravo to oboist Ewan Millar, winner of the Woodwind Category Final of

2020.
Many congratulations to you and to all of our woodwind finalists for wowing the judges and audience. You are superstars! ❤️
THIS. This is for my money is the very best of us happening here on these shores. Without a penny of state support (and an utterly bewildering recent failed application with you know who) and yet still they go on.
@Paul_McCreesh
and his team deserve all our support.
Warmest thanks for your wonderful and generous messages on every conceivable platform about our
@wigmore_hall
concert today.
@juliusdrake
and I felt the honour to play in this series most deeply. Cat is my cousin’s, with impeccable taste; and it was freezing when I got home!
Whatever your regular news source is, if you care one jot about the Arts in the UK please do read this. I think it hits so many of the right buttons and chimes strongly with my own thinking.
Ok
@British_Airways
“I’m mad as hell and I’m just not going to take it any more”. When your own website explicitly says instruments are fine why do you stress out my friends and say they can’t board because hard cases? Ms J Shave and Ms C Finnimore deserve an apology.
Such a joy to be back before the Proms audience this morning, great turnout in train strike times! I felt so free on stage with
@dinispsousa
and
@RNSinfonia
, so huge thanks to them and the
@bbcproms
team. THAT is an audience. Feeling the love for

tonight.
Hugely honoured and delighted to be awarded the Cobbett Medal for Chamber Music last night by the

An extraordinary evening of music making with hundreds of young people singing at the most incredible level while we played gut strings and antique winds and brass. Elgar was the star and we all knew it.

You might say that, but the harm that she is doing to Trans people from her high tower & huge reach here unchecked, or checked only by her lawyers, is inestimable. I can’t believe a good person would deliberately cause so much hurt and pain unless out of hurt and pain herself.
Dear
@Schofe
I have been through exactly what you are going through, and I remember the pain and the guilt so well. Don’t let it consume you, I PROMISE you’re going through the worst time now. I’m in with my Piotr now and very close to my kids and their mother. All will be well x
Totally tone-deaf tweet. Highlights for who? Not any real music lover and not anyone hurt or offended by it. Why do you think people are making a fuss? They’re not just bored. Most musicians lie back and try not to think of England while playing or hearing it. Many better choices
Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory are highlights of the Last Night of the Proms

Scoop! Britain is the first country in world history to open up by pulling up the drawbridge! The sad reality behind this newspeak: less freedoms & opportunities for continental Europeans and British people alike. Everyone loses.
Devastating news about Simon Bainbridge. He wrote great music for Joy Farrall & me in earlier years-the Clarinet Quintet and the astonishing Double Concerto. He was truly a great composer, one of our best in a crop of greats, and his music deserves to be remembered & celebrated.

I just realised today that the first composer I ever met and performed their music was Elizabeth Maconchy. Talk about starting hot out of the gate. I was 11.
I was lucky enough to be at
@WelshNatOpera
’s Death in Venice tonight, it was fabulous, but mostly I was moved by the sensitivity and virtuosity of the orchestra, under threat of a 15% pay cut-7 weeks less work a year. Please do sign this to support them.
A few choice pics from today. Absolutely packed in like sardines and miles of it, fantastic atmos and friendly folks. We felt it was really good to be there.
Looking forward to talking with
@MaxMusicians
about the necessity for visa/permit-free EU touring and how we can work together to ensure the govt deliver it!
having thought about it over a night of sleep, I think the de-funding of the Britten Sinfonia in the NPO is the most monstrous arts news in recent memory and, frankly, it makes me sclerotically angry.
Last night, as it turned midnight in Scotland, a gathering of us in her beautiful apartment in New York sang Thea Musgrave Happy Birthday, her 90th. She is so very special and very loved and we are celebrating her with a HUGE concert tonight with great new and old works. 🥂❤️💐

Absolutely awful news. A visionary years ahead of his time, immersed in the community,

We are devastated to announce that today 17 July 2021 Sir Graham Vick, Artistic Director, Birmingham Opera Company died of complications arising from Covid 19. We would ask all to respect the privacy of his partner and loved ones at this time.
Feeling sad today, it’s hard to be away, but grateful that I was able to spend time with Her Majesty. She was absolutely unique: elegant, charming, and deeply funny, but my abiding memory is that I have met a person with the most profound spirituality and faith. Deeply affecting.
Hi all. I’ve decided that despite its benefits ‘Twitter’ has become toxic & it’s worsening. I’m keeping this profile but will build Instagram where I am ndanielmusic although name is wrong for the moment. 🤦🏻. Please join me there, and good luck here guys. Terfs don’t even bother

You absolute idiot. It takes a real man to be a Father, and a really sensible man to know that having your baby close is best for them and for you. Why don’t you grow a pair yourself and realise that comments like that reflect so badly on you and are in no way clever or funny.

A 50% cut to Arts subjects at HE when the Arts are about to re-establish themselves as fundamental to our lives as we recover from the Corona times. What utter misguided madness, and what a kick in the teeth AGAIN.
The Government has announced plans to impose a catastrophic 50% funding cut to arts subjects at higher education (HE) level in England, including music.
