“We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.”

In the spring of 1985 we padlocked the front doors of Hamilton Hall, renaming it Mandela Hall, and encamped on the steps for three weeks. Columbia divested from South Africa in the fall of 1985.
BREAKING: Dozens of protesters occupied Hamilton Hall in the early hours of Tuesday morning, moving metal gates to barricade the doors, blocking entrances with wooden tables and chairs, and zip-tying doors shut.
These beautiful Armenian students spoke about the Armenian Genocide, Artsakh, Jerusalem, and Armenian-Palestinian solidarities tonight at Columbia’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment.
I was on the campus yesterday and witnessed this disgraceful exercise in security theater coming on the heels of the president's groveling display in Congress. This editorial is so good. These students give me hope.
My Armenian genocide survivor grandmother is the little girl on the right. Her memory inspires my writing and my organizing. I think of her when I look at photos of the children of Artsakh and of Gaza.

Yes! During the divestment protests, I was a grad student and we took over Hamilton Hall and renamed it Mandela Hall. They called in the NYPD and disciplined the student leaders.
To all my Armenian friends feeling despair about the war and horror at the photo of Aliyev with the helmets of our fallen boys: Let their contempt make us celebrate our survival and our resilience; Let their hatred galvanize us to action.

I was a student at Columbia in 1985, sleeping on the steps of Mandela Hall, calling for divestment to end South African apartheid. I was there today watching the arrests of students taking a stand against genocide and apartheid. Today was actually worse.

I'm not Palestinian. I'm Armenian-American. My grandmother was an Armenian Genocide survivor. She was among 8,000 orphans at Ras al Ain in the Syrian desert. And so I stand in solidarity with Palestinians.

Hey

I just deactivated my account because you are continuing to rent properties built on stolen Palestinian land. That's unethical and illegal.

Renowned Armenian historian Nina Garsoïan passed away at her home in NYC today (August 14, 2022) at the age of 99. She was a brilliant and erudite scholar, as well as a lovely person. I took classes with her at Columbia in the late 80’s.
Today an Israeli military judge denied bail to Ahed Tamimi. On 31 Jan. she will spend her 17th birthday in jail. Send her a birthday card.

On this day in 2014, when I was on an Armenian Heritage Trip, I had my photo taken at the city limit of Mersin, where my grandmother was born. Armen Aroyan, our tour leader, asked me to hold a copy of my first novel ZABELLE.

I love this interview and have read it several times. This is my favorite line: “You can write about your parents when they’re gone, but your children are still going to be here, and you’re going to want them to come and visit you in the nursing home.”
