After every Zoom meeting on the planet, I’m excited to announce that I will be starting this Fall as an Assistant Professor and Career Development Awardee in the Department of Pediatrics at
@UW
and
@seattlechildren
research institute!
@EvansBrainLab
coming it ya this fall
The Evans Lab will be a reality... Whew never that would ever come out of my mouth.... Can't say where yet because I haven't made a decision on the offers but ITS COMING!!
Finally decided I should use my professional twitter.. I’m Myron Evans and I’m a postdoc
@StJudeResearch
studying the role of epigenetic regulation in neurodevelopment and tumorigenesis
Missed out on
#blackinneuroweek
so decided I’d hop on over here to
#BlackInGeneticsRollCall
The Evans Lab is hiring!! Looking for postdocs and senior scientists to take on some exciting projects in epigenetic regulation of development and tumorigenesis!
@seattlechildren
is a fantastic place to work and you get to join an awesome team in our center
Having mentors that keep reminding me “Its a whole pandemic out there” when I think about how little I’ve done with my lab is lifesaving.. especially for an “overachiever” like me
But also I get a package every day now so ITS HAPPENING
11 years ago today was my first presentation in a lab meeting as a grad student and today was my last one as a postdoc..
@seattlechildren
here I come!!
Please RT: Looking for a postdoc! Come study developmental neuroscience, epigenetics, and/or therapeutic development for pediatric brain tumors with us:
DM with any questions! Hopefully some of the replies vouch for the cool science and good mentorship 😃
Couldn’t have done it without my awesome mentors!!
@hatleylab
and the twitterless Martine Rousseau.. true powerhouses in science and mentoring
Ps..
@hatleylab
is hiring so come postdoc with some of the best people I know
Today’s the day I pack up and move again for hopefully the last time for a while. Excited for Friday and the start of the career I’ve been working towards for 16 years.
@seattlechildren
here I come! Catch you later, Memphis!
A new type of typeface might be beneficial to neurodivergent readers! 🤯
It's called bionic reading — the first few letters are bolded, making it easier for readers to glide through text and stay focused.

Money secured for the lab, lunch with my awesome team, NO grant writing (although I did get an LoI accepted)...
Could not have asked for a better day to end another trip around the sun
This is insane. Julie Overbaugh is among the most kind, generous, upstanding researchers in our field. If you can stand by while her reputation is dragged through the mud because of a fancy dress costume so that
@UWMedicine
can burnish its woke credentials then shame on you
Seattle Children's Dr. Eric Tham’s op-ed in the

Prob a dumb question: anybody know a tool where I can throw a gene list and get hits on possible small molecules that would antagonize?
This is a gene list upregulated in surviving cells after treatment with one drug and looking for rational combos

Build a good network of other new PIs so you can vent to somebody who is going through the same things you are and don’t have experiences from YEARS ago that aren’t applicable anymore
BREAKING: David Sabatini has withdrawn his name from consideration for employment at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, according to his spokesperson, calling the allegations of sexual misconduct “false, distorted, and preposterous.”
Highs and lows of

life:
first pre-clinical modeling experiment in the lab was a success even though we had to scramble for drugs after a mistake in shipping
two grant rejections in two days
PSA: There are brilliant people at not fancy places. I got my PhD in a dept ranked 28th at the time. I turned down a top 5 program to go there. Why? None of Fac I wanted to work with at the "fancy" place looked me in the eye at recruiting weekend. Not all bout rankings for URMs.
I know I belong in my current role, but that doesn’t change the discomfort I feel walking into rooms and realizing I am “the only”. I power through, make my presence known (though, not always heard) but it’s f*cking hard. Sometimes I just wanna cry, but I just keep going.
This weeks episode is with
@myron_evansPhD
where he discussed his research in cancer epigenetics & his recent publication in Nature Communications exploring how Ybx1 fine tunes PRC2 activities in embryonic brain development!

Thanksgiving is normally the time you give thanks for stuff but heading into 2022 I wanted to give a big shoutout to this amazing team
@seattlechildren
who welcomed me with open arms and have and will continue to be amazing colleagues
I’m not even looking but I know they are RIPPING you up in the QRTs cause this is trash advice
I’m not about to play respectability politics just to get tenure and watch the game not change AT ALL when I finally have a say
1) On TT - Be the fuzzy bunny nobody wants to kick - advice my academic big sister gave me when I started on TT. These people will be voting on your future. You can be the game changer after you get tenure.
Looking for a tech position with two of the coolest new PIs at
@seattlechildren
:
Come work with me and
@SiobhanPattwell
on projects in developmental biology, neuroscience, and neuro-oncology
Feel free to reach out by DM/email with questions
If you spend a lot of time copying text from PDFs into Word like me, I hope this tip might be useful! If the PDF ends up broken up over lots of lines, there's no need to fix it manually. Just go to find and replace, type ^p into find, and one space into replace. Pics below :)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved colleague and friend, C. David Allis. Aside from his groundbreaking contributions to biomedical science, David will be remembered for his warmth, humility, and relentless optimism.
Am I allowed to participate in this event every year?!? And if anybody else wants me on stage my fees are LOW (just feed me lunch)
But seriously a great opportunity to support
@seattlechildren
and the work that all of our guilds do for the kids
Had a great time at
#SNO2021
with my musketeers
@SiobhanPattwell
@VitanzaNick
hearing about all the awesome work going on in the field. Hopefully next year I’ll be up there giving a talk too
Towndogs out for Saturday shenanigans ♥️

? Let us know 😀
After a long break from an initial look at my R01 reviews (rev, discussed, not funded), I reopened them and took a look with Rick McGee, a legend
@NorthwesternU
who among many roles, runs a grant writing group. Rick said, "you shouldn't read grant reviews alone." I now agree
After completing training at a prominent children's hospital in TN, Dr. Evans moved x-country to join Seattle's exciting research community and the cutting-edge brain tumor research at
@seattlechildren
.
@dude__itsme
@AcademicChatter
I switched from cancer to developmental neuroscience and now get to do both.. I just leveraged the skills I had as new perspectives for their research..
the learning curve was steep and a little scary feeling like I should know more as a postdoc but you just gotta work hard
Dafna Bar-Sagi: "We don't police [ mentor/mentee ] relationships because people end up in very positive relationships, getting married, living together."
Didn't even make it to the weekend post supreme court decision before somebody told me I was an affirmative action admit to grad school and a hire at my job.. lololol..
ICYMI: Leslie Walker-Harding, M.D., F.A.A.P., F.S.A.H.M. from

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Stephen Carney to the Invent
@SC
program! Dr. Carney will be joining Dr. Myron Evans’ (
@myron_evansPhD
) lab where he will study targeting epigenetic regulators in the treatment of CNS tumors.
Congratulations
@ApfelbaumApril
!!
Editors, get in here and read this paper and let’s get it published. Also, April will need a postdoc soon (even though I just want her to come to my lab) so eyes open if you like good talent!
New insights into Ewing sarcoma. HOXD13 acts as a rheostat for activity of EWS-FLI1 - modulating mesenchymal cell state. Awesome work led by
@ApfelbaumApril
🔥👩🔬🧬
HOXD13 is a direct EWS-FLI1 target and moderates fusion-dependent transcriptional states
Have you ever vibed with someone on Twitter, schedule to meet up IRL, and worry the vibe is gonna go away? Y’all…
@myron_evansPhD
is even better in person!
Also, Seattle
#NewPI
happy hour part 1 was a success - highly recommend finding/creating a local

Several immensely talented postdocs will be leaving our lab within the next year. I wanted to make it clear (to folks involved in selection/grants committees) that they all *own* the work they've done here & they'll take it *all* with them, of course (it's theirs!).
It’s so funny when I read academics (women) write about “imposter syndrome.” I had the exact opposite feeling, like I was the only insightful and serious person and everyone else was doing fake stuff. Seems like the imposter syndrome people should trust their instincts.
Watters: No one is arguing slaves benefited from slavery. No one is saying that. It is not true. They are teaching how black people develop skills during slavery in some instances that can be applied for their own personal benefit

I'm in my 30s and I can't honestly count the number of times I've had this conversation with my parents... Every headline just makes me tired in a way I can't explain to the people I work with
Does any other race have this conversation repeatedly w/ their loved ones? I know he is tired of having to reassure me. Every single time I hear of another case of
#Murder
by way of
#PoliceBrutality
it strikes me w/ a level of fear I can not explain. I don’t want another hashtag.
Wonderful 2 days connecting in person with colleagues from the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Research
@seattlechildren
! And the Seattle weather cooperated!
I wish other reviewers agreed with this and weren’t expecting every junior PI to find a senior PI (I.e. somebody random at their institution) to co-mentor
I'd MUCH rather see a detailed training plan by a jr PI than a generic plan by someone whose trained 10, 20, 30, 40+ people. Quantity doesn't always equal quality when it comes to mentorship.
“I think most people know this about academia: It is not a 9-to-5. You’re constantly thinking about where your work is going…,” says Dr. Evans. “When you take time off, it’s really to take that time away, enjoy it, and spend it with people you care about.”
