Dear Assistant Professors:
How are y’all getting everything done that you are expected to complete within a 5-day work week? Because I’ve honestly been working 7 days a week for as long as I can remember, and I still can’t get everything done. And I’m about to ~lose~ it.
As a PI who grew up with limited family income, it’s still difficult for me to drop large amounts of money for conference travel, even if the funding exists. It’s also hard to pay costs upfront, as someone who is
#FirstGen
on a single income. Why isn’t this talked about more???
New JCE ASAP article! We surveyed industry chemists from 80 companies about the undergraduate instrumentation experience / skill development that best prepared them for chemical industry.

Welcome to the Atkinson Research Group! Very excited to have such a great space for chemistry education research

Today I have both electricity and clean water. I just took a shower for the first time in 6 days. And quite frankly, I’m completely exhausted. Mentally and emotionally drained.
Two rejections in one day?
Promised myself I’d always share the highs and the lows. Let’s normalize sharing the “failures” along with the “successes”.
Rejection? ❌
REDIRECTION ❤️
To those who were awarded an NSF GRFP - a big congratulations!
To those who were not awarded - I never even applied for an NSF GRFP. As a first-gen student, I didn’t even know it existed until I got to my postdoc. You can definitely still be successful without it.❤️
Finally made it out to Big Bend National Park last weekend. Hiked in the Chisos Mountains and waded in the Rio Grande. I absolutely cannot believe this is in the state of Texas.⛰🌵🌿
Meet Dr. Molly Atkinson, one of our newest

Submitted a small grant proposal, not funded. Comments: highly rated, department support, likelihood of producing novel results is high, etc.
Then there’s this: “I have not seen chemical education proposals in this award pool but applaud the applicant for the submission.”

On our way to

#2023NDiSTEM
! We have 3
@UNTChemistry
undergrad scholars (Kely Juan, Marian Martinez, and Darien Garza-Lund) presenting posters on their work funded through the

on equitable pathways to STEM. AND it’s their FIRST conference - come find us!
Congrats to all those awarded an NSF GRF!
To those who were not awarded - this is absolutely NOT a reflection of your abilities as a scientist or as a human being. So many of us did not win a GRF - you WILL find success without one.
This is not failure. This is progress.💚
For the first time in my entire life, I set an automatic email reply that I am out of office for the next 5 days.😅 Don’t call, don’t text, I gotta go get my only sister married to the love of her life.❤️

I wholeheartedly do not recommend the above stack 😂🙃🫠 But feeling really really grateful 💚
Today my tenure extension was officially submitted, and to say that doesn’t weigh heavy on my mind would be a lie. Tough to be faced with that 2 months into a faculty appointment, but none of us have any other option. If you’re in the same boat, I’m sending good vibes your way.❤️
Just finished teaching my very last Zoom class for Fall 2020! This semester fully online as a brand new professor has been WILD. Thankful for colleagues always willing to lend an ear... and answer my silly Canvas questions.😂🤯
As a new faculty member amid the COVID-19 pandemic, I’m convinced that the 2020-2021 academic year has taken at least 10 years off my life.
But: I am wholeheartedly embracing all the gray hairs that were added this year. 👵🏻😂
If there’s one thing Year 1 taught me, it’s the importance of “me” time away from work.
A lovely little 94% humidity 5k this morning and first place in my age group to remind me why running is essential in my life.❤️🥇🏃🏻♀️

A transparent moment: I lost a friend this week from a breakthrough case. I’m mad & it hurts & it’s hard.
Taking tomorrow to attend their celebration of life and to reflect/process. Frankly, I don’t feel capable of continuing to work through grief.
Let’s normalize this, please.
2017 - 7th half marathon
2018 - too busy writing dissertation
2019 - too busy in postdoc
2020 - too busy interviewing
2021-2022 - too busy pre-tenure
Enough is enough, and life is too short. Today, I ran my 8th half marathon.

As we end another year, thank you to the ones who trusted me enough to join us on this journey. 🪴💚
One day, I’m gonna wake up and there won’t be any more time to do all the things I wanted to do. So I’m doing them all now.

While I agree that it’s better to take a “selective approach” over an “any-benefit approach”, let’s talk about the elephant in the room…
That in this system, there often isn’t a way to actually say no, depending upon who presents that opportunity to you. Just saying. 👀
THIS. Starting it all during the pandemic didn’t help, and I’m sure living alone across the country from any of my family exacerbates my own feelings of loneliness. But I was truly unprepared for how isolating being a PI feels. Hugs to those who feel or have felt this too.❤️
I love being a PI, but this job comes with a sense of loneliness I never felt as a student or postdoc. I am thankful for my support system of family, mentors, and colleagues, but no one can fully understand the daily challenges. I’m pretty sure this is normal, just unexpected.
Does anyone else overestimate the amount they can accomplish each week, so much so that the Friday to-do list is ~comical~ because everything gets pushed back throughout the week?
Just me? Oh… 😂
I’m working on being more realistic with my expectations of myself.❤️
