It happened because the Coalition’s primary vote fell by even more, much more. Hopefully soon ppl will STFU about Labor’s primary vote. They got 52+% the two party preferred vote and a majority of seats. (Otoh Declining support for both major parties is an important story)

A note from the Mother Country. Dear Andrew, Australia has now had 37 failed constitutional refs on 18 occasions + 2 non-const. ones (on WW1 conscription). After one of the latter the PM quit his party, joined the opposition & remained PM. Apart from that, no PM has resigned.
