When I first saw this, my jaw dropped and I thought it was some 80's architecture crime, from when the Chamber of Commerce relocated. But it looks like weather and chemical reactions degraded the Vermont marble, and the statues were removed in 1926, just 23 years later.

Sorry, but if you don’t think rising construction costs are what killed beautiful architecture, you’re wrong. Example 1: 246 Greene St. ~37k sq ft, built 1892 for $140k ($4.8m today). That’s $130 a sq ft. Unthinkable.
