What’s so tough about getting a temporary ramp, when there are providers like
@rampmycity
in our very own city of Bengaluru who can customise for every requirement! Cost is not an issue, the intention is. When will people with disabilities get equal rights?
I’m tired of hearing “we are trying to get the Ramp” or a blatant “we cannot do anything about it” from the restaurants. Just because I am on a
#wheelchair
, I don’t have the right to dine in these fine places!!!
But now, finding another wheelchair accessible apartment and a house in the last few weeks has been a difficult journey. It's alarming to know that many brokers and homeowners think that a couple of steps can be passed off as accessible.
In many Indian apartments, the door of the bathroom is extremely narrow. No surprises, that being a quadriplegic, I take my bath also in a wheelchair. Hence, the door of the bathroom has to be at least 25 inches wide for me to get inside along with my shower-wheelchair.
My motorised wheelchair weighs 130 kgs, and I cannot be lifted along with it. When I say that I need a step free entrance, it actually has to be without steps, or with the facility of a Ramp.
Six years ago we were blessed to know that my workplace is in a campus that also has residential apartments, mall, hospital, school etc. The fact that we had to pay higher rent than nearby buildings, was an easy compromise.
Some bathrooms have a wash basin as soon as you enter, and some have the commode, blocking the entrance. In some cases there is a huge wardrobe right outside the bathroom door, making manoeuvring my way inside the bathroom difficult.

Being a wheelchair user, this meant I did not have to travel on the road to get to my office every day. I did not have to go to the ordeal of being lifted and shifted into a cab in the absence of accessible vehicle.
Today was a milestone day at work because of

I'm glad that more people in India can now experience the wonder of voice assistants. Excited to see where this goes :-)
Even though my body is paralysed, I'm the same person inside. I question unconscious biases in the workplace and fight for equal opportunities and accessibility so that it opens up avenues for other people with disabilities.

I am disabled and I got married at the Registrars Office at Khar Mumbai on 16/10/23. The office was on the 2nd floor WITHOUT a lift. They wouldn’t come downstairs for the signatures and I had to be carried up two flights of stairs to get married.
