Matsuda shot him in non-lethal areas and ryuk said something about not wanting to wait for Light to die in prison (implies that he would've loved longer).. so no I don't think matsuda really killed him. ryuk got the kill confirm matsuda got the assist 💯
Ryuk might have delivered the coup de grace, but there was no realistic way Light would have survived his wounds. To all intents and purposes Matsuda kills him.
In this instant he goes from being a despised butt monkey to a hero - and again, the audience stand in.
