Apple's new "Crush" ad (let's call it "2024") is a visual & metaphorical bookend to the 1984 ad. 1984: Monochome, conformist, industrial world exploded by colourful, vibrant human 2024: Colourful, vibrant humanity is crushed by monochrome, conformist industrial press

I'm genuinely concerned about the UK at this point.
i can't believe what i'm hearing. a football club stalked a woman including to find out her home address and where she shops, and put a dossier together listing her vulnerabilities, because... she posted on social media that transwomen aren't women... in 2024 in the UK?!

@Jay28998630 @AllisonPearson @EylonALevy π― If they're hostages (as I believe they are) Hamas is committing a war crime by taking them. If they are PoWs (which they are not) Hand is committing a war crime by parading then like this.

@peterrhague π
If you work in finance, you're required to take training in Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Anti-bribery each year. Specific sections of these focus on how to interact with politicians. It would be good to have politicians (and the media) do the same training.

The circumstances that lead to this situation arise, people the people paying the money don't have a care for the people supplying the money. If this was your own money you'd care a lot more about waste. Government doesn't have this mindset. But it must have it.
To be clear, what the @DOGE team and @USTreasury have jointly agreed makes sense is the following: - Require that all outgoing government payments have a payment categorization code, which is necessary in order to pass financial audits. This is frequently left blank, making audits almost impossible. - All payments must also include a rationale for the payment in the comment field, which is currently left blank. Importantly, we are not yet applying ANY judgment to this rationale, but simply requiring that SOME attempt be made to explain the payment more than NOTHING! - The DO-NOT-PAY list of entities known to be fraudulent or people who are dead or are probable fronts for terrorist organizations or do not match Congressional appropriations must actually be implemented and not ignored. Also, it can currently take up to a year to get on this list, which is far too long. This list should be updated at least weekly, if not daily. The above super obvious and necessary changes are being implemented by existing, long-time career government employees, not anyone from @DOGE. It is ridiculous that these changes didnβt exist already! Yesterday, I was told that there are currently over $100B/year of entitlements payments to individuals with no SSN or even a temporary ID number. If accurate, this is extremely suspicious. When I asked if anyone at Treasury had a rough guess for what percentage of that number is unequivocal and obvious fraud, the consensus in the room was about half, so $50B/year or $1B/week!! This is utterly insane and must be addressed immediately.

@peterrhague @tomhfh The combination of misplaced guilt on the one hand, and a cynical manipulation of that guilt on the other, has been devastating for British self-image.

@micsolana Is it more or less of a coup than maintaining the fiction that a sitting president obviously suffering from dementia is in charge and not his wife and other party members?

I strongly recommend this episode of @thehonestlypod. The discussion on the role of history in politics today, combined with general ignorance of history is compelling.

Called it 3 years ago. The US is pulling itself out of a dark place. The UK and EU are doubling down.
@pmarca All sorts of policies from the EU - from industrial policy to the DMA - are sort of Diet China at the moment. No one wants to admit the people in charge in the US & EU sort of admire the Chinese and are a little jealous that they don't have as much control as the Chinese do.
