After 5+ years in 🏝️ Miami, I’ve moved back to the 🌁 Bay Area! We moved to: 1) Maximize the number of founders I’m around: The Bay Area still has the highest concentration of founders of any geo, by leaps and bounds. So much of pre-seed and seed investing is driven by the people founding these businesses and getting to know them in person is a critical step in my process. It’s been incredibly energizing to be back these last few weeks and meet/see so many founders and co-investors in person. If you’re around, please text, e-mail, DM — I’d love to catch up! 2) Raise our kids: Florida became increasingly hostile for same-sex families and the lgbtq+ community, especially in the public school system. During our last week in Miami, another two-mom family in our neighborhood had their home graffiti'd with anti-gay, racist slurs. I’m excited to raise our two kids in a place where families like ours are more common and embraced. We’ve only been back a month, but I already feel a huge weight lifted off my shoulders! 🏳️🌈 Miami will always be my home and I’m rooting for the city to succeed. We’ve always been plagued by a “hype over substance” imbalance. The caliber of folks that have made Miami their home and spent professional time there since 2020 is a meaningful change for the city, helping tip the scales and offset the massive brain drain we’ve historically had. I'll be back to visit often!

such a helpful and impactful framing of an important, but non-obvious truth. failure leads to success.
Kobe is a 5x NBA Champion. He also holds the all-time record for missed shots. Babe Ruth is a 7x World Series Champion. He also led the MLB in strikeouts for 5 seasons. Tom Brady is a 7x Superbowl Champion. He also holds the record for most passes intercepted in Superbowl history. Serena Williams is a 23x Gram Slam Champion. She also holds the record for the most unforced errors in a single match. Novak Djokovic is a 24x Grand Slam Champion. He also holds the record for the most tennis final losses in history. These aren't contradictions, they are proof of what it takes to win at the highest levels. Winners don't succeed in spite of failure, they succeed because of failure. While others shield themselves from the sting of defeat, winners run towards it. They take big risks and put their reputation on the line, knowing that whatever happens, they'll come out a more competent opponent on the other side. Whether you're chasing championships or personal goals, the same truth applies. To double your rate of success, you have to double your rate of failure. The more you learn about what doesn't work, the more you understand what does. Everything changes when you reframe losses like this. It's not a setback, it's one step closer. It's not a measure of incompetence, it's proof of your willingness to take risks and charge boldy forwards. Failure isn't the enemy of success, it's the foundation.

after investing in @brightwheel 9 years ago, I finally got to use it as a parent for the first time yesterday. Hands down the best app for daycare/preschools. have used 3 others before and they’re all clunky. Great job @davevasen!!
