Great scoop by @ClimateHome The UAE's $30bn COP28 fund for clean energy gave $300m to BlackRock which invested in a US gas pipeline. This is a wake-up call to the world that these funds are often little more than PR stunts to greenwash COP hosts.

The narrowing of the language to just cover ‘unabated’ coal power and ‘inefficient’ subsidies leaves room for untested technologies such as CCS which only the rich world has access to. We need a global phase out that is fast, fair and final for all fossil fuels.

Finance is where the whole energy transition plan will stand or fall. This process might deliver an agreement to move away from fossil fuels, but it’s failing to deliver a plan to fund it. Unless the finance is provided, developing countries will not be able to do it. If rich

On carbon markets, it's fair to say given the disastrous course of over 2.4 C heating we're currently on, NO RULES ARE BETTER THAN BAD RULES. No point in accepting phoney carbon credits into the system, which would directly increase warming.

On the $100 billion goal, developed countries need to reaffirm that the goal was missed, and say when it will be met and how the resulting shortfall will be addressed. Let's remember this goal is far less than what's needed.

On Finance, they talk of trillions being mobilised outside but inside they haven’t even managed to mobilise $100 billion in 12 years. They don’t even want a review of the delivery of the 100 billion under the UNFCCC or discussion on long term finance.

COP29 in Baku is supposed to be where we agree the new long term climate finance goal. Yet in Bonn rich countries did everything they could to stall the process, even unpicking their commitment from COP28 in Dubai to have an annual dialogue specifically on climate finance.

My thoughts on why we need a broader scope for just transition, to be able to mitigate the climate emergency & deliver greater prosperity for all, from an African perspective #COP28 🧵👇🏿

The recent Bonn climate talks finished with a dangerously weak outcome. My piece for @ClimateHome on why it threatens this year's COP29 & imperils next year's NDCs. ...And what needs to be done this year to fix it.

He’s right to point the finger at fossil fuels. It’s crazy that with all the science & all the climate suffering, we have a COP28 being overseen by an oil company CEO. The task is clear for Al Jaber to prove his critics wrong. COP28 needs to mark the phase out of all fossil fuels

Here is my response to reports that OPEC is pushing back against a fossil fuel phase out agreement at #COP28 These letters show that fossil fuel interests are starting to realise that the writing is on the wall for dirty energy.  Their fossil fuels have imperilled the planet,

💥Opec oil cartel is *very* worried about the prospect of #COP28 deciding to back a fossil fuel phase out, according to leaked letters seen by the Guardian 🧵1/8

"Climate change is killing poor people around the globe and these petrostates don’t want Cop28 to phase out fossil fuels because it will hurt their short-term profits. It’s shameful." My comments on OPEC panic at fossil fuel phase out.

Nuclear is not good for the world. The unveiling of a nuclear coalition at #COP28 is a distraction to real action. Nuclear energy, like fossil fuels, is costly & as a centralized energy system, is unsuitable to address universal energy access. 🧵👇🏿

Lest we forget, #COP27 was billed as an implementation COP, but truth be told, it's increasingly looking like a Glasgow 'repetition COP', particularly on fossil fuel phase out, there’s no progress from last year. There’s still no mention of phase out of oil and gas in the text.

The EU needs to stop holding a gun to the heads of the climate vulnerable by threatening a walk out. They should get off their high horse & work with the developing countries to deliver a good outcome, including a loss & damage fund and fossil fuels phaseout here in #COP27

"No deal is better than a bad deal," @TimmermansEU tells reporters this morning. The EU has moved on loss and damage. It wants others (US, China, Saudi Arabia) to move towards it. And yes: Pakistan would be eligible for loss & damage funds under the EU proposal, Timmermans says
