๐ฃ๐ฃ Happy to share movies of two asteroids moving through @VRubinObs ComCam field during our commissioning run this fall. These are previously-known asteroids, J95S71P and K02F06B, seen in ComCam data on November 26th, 2024. K02F06B is a non-hazardous Near Earth Object (NEO) with a diameter around one kilometer, while J95S71P is a main belt asteroid on a circular orbit. They are just a sample of the hundreds of asteroids imaged in ComCam commissioning. The data for all will be made public in our "Data Preview 1" release, scheduled around July. Steadily marching towards regular operations of this telescope near the end of this year. And then expect hundreds of thousands of observations like these, every night. Yes!!! The first public image from @VRubinObs Simonyi Survey Telescope (just the fun pixels ๐). Now ponder getting 21x this, every ~40 seconds, ~8hrs/night, for 10 years. That's what's coming by the end of this year.

@di_goldene_pave @b612foundation Search for "occultation" on -- there was some discussion a few days ago but I wouldn't know the details myself.

@carl_feynman @DJSnM @VRubinObs It's the packed designation format, frequently used when reporting measurements to the IAU Minor Planet Center.

Details for the scientists:
I realized I never posted that @VRubinObs published the first report on commissioning camera on-sky observations. See ๐งต for some figures (and link).

@FromWhiteCastle It's also phenomenal at "data cleaning", taking poorly formatted data sources and reformatting to usable tables. What we used to joke was "80% of data science". Even if there were zero future advances in AI, what's out there now is worth at least a few $100/month.
