If you’ve ever panic bought toilet paper or petrol, just remember you’re experiencing the tiniest fraction of the panic people feel when they’re forced to flee their homes or cross the channel.
Yesterday there was a terrorist attack on British soil, a literal suicide bombing. You would hardly know because the intended victims are not treated as part of our communities. And then they were rehoused at Manston - a site already notorious for violating human rights.
MPs have been told over and over again not to publicly name asylum seeker accommodation because it is dangerous. This hotel was set on fire tonight. They are your constituents too. You doxxed them in the Houses of Parliament.
My dad was eccentric and definitely not perfect. He loved Das Boot, Guns N Roses and Aston Villa. He was a terrible handyman, all our houses are full of things he broke while fixing. He was generous to an absurd degree. Ask him for a can of coke and he would buy you 40.
If you ever needed an argument for why political values are more important than diversity, remember that the two people running the show tonight are Priti Patel and Cressida Dick.
None of these things can describe my dad enough for you to know that he did not deserve to go through what he did, and that it is unforgivable. How terrifying, how unfair. That day it was him, but who will it be tomorrow.
A centre housing migrants being bombed should ring LOUD warning alarms for everyone. It’s not a one off. This is the rise of fascism under a government promoting the same values. I am terrified for the state of this country and for people of colour.
He loved pub quizzes and collected facts, no car journey was complete without a quiz from dad. When I was 17 he would pick me and my friends up from nightclubs at 3am to make sure we got home safe. He hated spicy food. He loved ice cream.
He never took a break from work and wanted to travel when he retired. When I quit my job, he bought me an Apple Pencil engraved with “live life 💕”. When it arrived, he called 5 times to make sure there were two hearts and not one. I laughed but nothing explains him more.
Last year I got him a pair of slippers as a gift and he was so chuffed he sent me slipper selfies. This year he wanted a black Nike tracksuit for Christmas. It was lying unwrapped 10 feet away from him when he died.
I stand by my decisions – as well as those of my predecessors across the political divide – to strip those who pose a threat to our country of their British citizenship.
I will always put the rights of victims and their families first.
The Prime Minister said something today to the
@CommonsLiaison
that was both incredibly important and utterly shocking. He admitted that he does not know migrants and their families are unable to access public funds. His emotional response was, rightly, disgust.
He had not one wrinkle on his face but was so proud of his full white beard. He had a nickname for me so random that I am sure I will never hear those words said again. He made the best French toast. He thought Snapchat filters were deeply stupid. He didn’t trust Oyster cards.
Ireland has put up a firewall between access to healthcare and the equivalent of the Home Office. This means that if you come forward for healthcare or welfare you will not be arrested, detained or deported if you are undocumented. The UK needs to do this urgently.
#COVID19
CONFIRMED: It is SAFE for all migrants to access essential services during this crisis. The Irish Government has confirmed to MRCI that all people - documented or undocumented - can access healthcare and social services without fear.

It’s horrendous to speak about this but I feel that I have no choice. The NHS is crumbling in front of us and it’s dangerous. I can’t bear the thought of this happening to anyone else.
This is absolutely and categorically not a fact. It is not illegal to cross the channel and claim asylum in the UK.
@CarverEmily
needs to get her facts straight before going on national tv.
"If you cross in a dinghy boat, then you are an illegal immigrant. That is a fact." Or at least, it is a fact as far as press officer (and part-time international law expert)
@CarverEmily
reckons.
Shocking that the
@iealondon
would put such partisanship and ignorance on display.
My family is overwhelmed by all the kind and loving responses to this tweet. The irony is my dad would have been so EMBARRASSED by all the attention. But we can’t thank you all enough. I’ll leave you all with two hearts, Icky Rahman style, 💕.
The far-right did not wake up as geniuses one day and decide to target immigration services.
@pritipatel
sent them to us when she labelled us "lefty laywers" and "do-gooders". Any statements she makes this week which seem "sensible" are posthumous denials of accountability.
Imagine it taking the Home Secretary 6 hours to publicly respond in any other terrorist attack. And responding so weakly against terrorism itself. No condemnation. Barely any empathy. Completely inappropriate rehousing.
I can see people already referring to a "refugee crisis". This is a political crisis, and a crisis FOR refugees not OF them. People fleeing are not responsible for the crises they are experiencing or are subject to. This language allows Govts. to avoid responsibility.
Not only does the Home Sec not care that much, she is too busy dealing with the politics of her own resignation and reinstatement. This government does not care about the safety of anyone on British soil, just how much time they can spend in jobs they don’t deserve.
Here is a classic example of the Home Office trying to imply that asylum seekers are criminals, when the two systems have nothing to do with each other. Either they don't understand their own system (correct) or they're trying to incite hatred (also correct).
Yesterday we returned 14 dangerous Foreign National Offenders, who broke our rules & abused our values, to Lithuania. Our efforts to return those who arrived via illegally-facilitated routes were frustrated by legal claims. Our asylum system is broken but we're making it fairer.
Anti-deportation campaigners need to get real smart real quick. Patel is now considering deporting people with 6 month convictions. That’s petty theft, cannabis, minor offences like fraud.
We’ve arrived at peak pathetic dystopia. The govt. would rather create floating prisons than just fix the problems they have created in the Home Office. We’re at 13 years of incompetence.
Breaking: A three-storey barge, which will be used to house migrants has arrived in Falmouth for repairs and renovations.
It is expected to be ready to house 500 people by mid-June.
I don’t like the Ghislaine Maxwell citizenship takes. I get the point - Patel is a hypocrite and Maxwell is horrendous. But no one should ever have citizenship revoked, it’s a weird nationalist concept that has no place in a functioning democracy.
THREAD: Right now it is being reported that people may have died in the Channel, including a baby and a toddler.
The Home Office will spin this so that they are removed from responsibility. You'll hear noises about traffickers and lawyers. But whose fault is it really?
Earlier this year the government closed down a route for unaccompanied asylum seeking children to enter the UK. If we're talking about responsibility we need to talk about the British government and the French authorities.

Do journos know that a Made In Chelsea star is claiming Carrie Symonds slid into her boyfriends DMs? Possibly while he was still PM. This is a scoop I fear they will not clock.
I know it looks shocking but it’s not shocking because migrants and people working with migrants have been screaming from the rooftops about no recourse to public funds. No one listens.
TONIGHT: shocking Channel 4 News report reveals how hundreds of overseas students have become destitute in the UK during lockdown, and turned to food banks in desperation.
One food bank in E London caters exclusively for 1700 international students a week, who queue for hours.
I think we're all agreed that no child should go hungry - correct?
In that case, we should scrap no recourse to public funds so that children with migrant families can have access to food, housing and safety.
I cannot stress enough that TERFs are fascist adjacent if not full blown. They are not the ordinary people who have questions or don’t understand. They are a becoming a well developed, organised hate group that has been radicalised online.
He’s current a policing minister but this man was actually an immigration minister very recently. Clearly never looked at a map or the political context in Rwanda. Policy on the back of a crisp packet.
It really is appalling that anyone supports a policy of “come and study here but only if you’re single and have no loved ones and then we’ll treat you like shit while you are here, isolate you and say you’re not part of our communities but thanks for giving us your money”
My dad died waiting for an ambulance. The demonisation of trans people is a distraction tactic for the very real issues in the NHS. Let’s hear how Labour are going to get everyone equal access to the health care they need and stop throwing people under the bus.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. If people are forced to choose between work or starving, they will work regardless of lockdown. Suspend the Hostile Environment or migrants will not be able to protect themselves or their families. It’s not a joke.
Imagine this being your priority when thousands of people have died, furlough schemes are coming to an end, several cities are on the verge of a second lockdown and winter is literally coming.
NEW: Boris Johnson's Rule Of 6 has a controversial exemption - for grouse shooting and similar field sports.
Upto 30 people can gather to hunt with guns cos classed as a licensed outdoor sport.
EXCLUSIVE: Cab Office drafted special meeting on exemption
Monday: International Women's Day
Tuesday: Hounding of black women all over the media
Wednesday: Police officer arrested on suspicion of murdering a young woman.
This is not how it is supposed to go.
What is most spectacular about this is
@MagicMagid
greeting a Parliament with a significant far-right cohort with "As-salamu alaykum". Which, btw, has the literal meaning "peace be upon you". Suck it lads. Take all the peace.
@pritipatel
NO. It is time you listened to the experts on the ground and introduced safe and legal routes for people to get to the UK safely. If you want to get rid of traffickers then allow people a way to get here safely. This is firmly your responsibility.
When I see scenes like this I feel such a great sense of loss rather than fear. Imagine if our Government, our media and those in power had spent the last 20 years empowering marginalised communities instead of the far-right. We’re not here by accident.
Tommy Robinson gets a Podium in Whitehall to bemoan No Brexit. Shame on our country. Shame on the Charlatans, Crooks and Liars who have brought this upon us. So many died fighting this evil to give us our peace and you gave this filth centre stage. Anger doesn’t get close.
Let me get this. Sunak built a swimming pool for his house on greenbelt land, paid to have the electricity grid updated to heat it, while his local public pool had to reduce hours due to electricity costs?
Solidarity with junior doctors, refugees and normal people I’d say.
So the flight has gone but it does not mean that it was lawful. I’m so sorry to all the people on the flight and to those who know and love them. Grateful that everyone’s hard work got some people off. It was always David vs Goliath but that doesn’t mean we quit.

@Nigel_Farage
You have stolen this footage from
@hackneylad
who was actually present and clarified that this protest was about the totally disgraceful conditions and enforced imprisonment of refugees on British soil.
UPDATES on the charter flight

has launched a legal challenge to halt the flight and

is intervening in the case.

There is still hope.
The concept that a child is personally responsible for his own death is abhorrent.
The real problem is that the government has shut down every practical route to safety.

This is DEVASTATING. We have told the Government that people will die if they do not urgently introduce safe and legal routes. This was a child, somebody loved him. He was not disposable. The Government has blood on their hands.

I’ve said what I have to say. I am now taking a break from twitter/the internet. Thank you to all those who have supported me and my family at this time x
If you're applying for a standard visitor visa to the UK - you can stay 6 months. The audacity of giving out 3 month visas for lorry rivers, in exploitative conditions, with no long term plan for filling the gap is mind boggling.
Anyone who works with migrants or refugees knows that there is no possible way to ‘game’ the Home Office. Many people are stuck for years without support, destitute, or pushed into debt, often homeless, unable to work, separated from family. There is no game.
Most people are unaware that many migrants are unable to access Government support right now during a pandemic due to harsh visa conditions. At a time when it's clear to us all that support from the Government is the difference between life and death.
The NHS is in crisis and we’re calling for
@RishiSunak
@Keir_Starmer
to meet with families like ours. We’re asking other families to come forward too, my DMs are open. My hope is that out of our worst experiences, we can restore our NHS for others.
Some earnest thoughts on the events in
#Glasgow
#Pollokshields
.
What happened there today epitomises everything that's wrong with the Home Office and this Government - but also shows us how we can oppose them. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
I’m saying this because, in a crisis, whatever you think will make you feel safe is how you respond. It may not seem rational or logical to others, but to you it makes perfect sense.
We'll be holding
@BorisJohnson
to the commitment he just made to look into this rule and help the people that it affects. We'll also be following up with MPs to ensure that they know they have constituents who are being pushed into dangerous conditions.
As a result, many have been forced to continue working in unsafe conditions or have been made destitute and homeless. They cannot self-isolate without a safety net to catch them.
@childrensociety
believe it affects up to 100,000 children.
The High Court found just a few weeks ago that the policy is unlawful. An amazing legal challenge brought by
@UnityProjectLdn
. Organisations of all kinds too wrote to the Govt. at the beginning calling on them to scrap the rule.
When I worked in Parliament, a Tory MPs assistant told me to "go back to where you came from" because I laughed at a friend's Union Jack socks.
This vibe isn't new.
Today's EHRC report is important but it isn't new. Every investigation into the Hostile Environment finds that it breaks laws, creates racial discrimination and pushes people into exploitation and poverty.
Don't believe me? Here's a list. Add your own.
So here is a story about
@NHSDigital
. They have lost my mother’s digital medical records in transfer between GPs. It’s been “pending” in their system for a over year now. This means she can’t claim her critical life insurance. And nobody - including her MP - knows what to do.
The BBC should not be showing images of vulnerable people crossing in boats - including pregnant women and children. It jeopardises their asylum claims because the Home Office will use it to return them. Do not share.

I believe Ministers admitting they dont read or take any interest in their department’s own findings or research, should at some point lead to firing. But that’s just me.
“I’m not familiar with that particular case”.
Suella Braverman says she didn’t know about 12 refugees being killed in Rwanda in 2018 after protesting about their conditions.
Moments earlier she insisted “Rwanda is safe for refugees”.
“Rwanda is a safe country” she repeats.
Mariam’s fiancé is in the UK. Her family and loved ones will be devastated. Her life was worth more than this. She should never have been a headline before or after her death.
The first victim of Wednesday’s tragic incident in The Channel has been named tonight as Mariam Nouri Hamadameen, a 21 year old Kurdish from northern Iraq.
I really didn't want to do a thread on safe and legal routes to the UK - but I can already tell that there's going to be a minefield of myths and hate speech today and there's some things that we need to be saying.
So today is my last day
@JCWI_UK
. I thought I would have more to say but I just feel quite emotional. Thank you to everyone who continues to better things for migrants and people of colour. The job changes but the work never stops.
Does anyone realise that

history in so many ways? Our first black, Muslim, refugee elected to EP and first seat in Yorkshire. Our history is now hope. 💚
There is no context in which it is acceptable for a police officer to stamp on someone's head or punch people who are not resisting and especially not when they are prone on the floor. These police officers were violent, dangerous and showed no skill in deescalation. Fire them.
The Government has just re-introduced an Immigration Bill which could be amended to reverse this hideous rule should there be enough outcry against it.
@libertyhq
have one ready and waiting.
It's clear from the last week of U-turns that this could be another turning point. The public is no longer in favour of all the terrible policies placed on the people who are keeping us safe, many of whom are migrants. It's time for change. Reversing this rule is a massive step.
This feeling will make people do things that they never thought they would have to do. Think about that when you’re asking ‘why don’t people just stay in France’.
The Government has introduced more detail into the Borders Bill and it's as ghastly as you can imagine.
Blackmail, "scientific" assessments from the dark ages, and misuse of the justice system.
Dystopian doesn't cover it ⬇️
I bite my tongue a lot, but I worked on Windrush and I am seriously uncomfortable calling for an "inquiry" into Manston. If the Govt did it, they would drag it out for years refusing to answer questions or change anything. Can we be serious and ask for what's needed.
Tomorrow is Friday when many Muslims will head to mosque to pray together. If you are not Muslim, check in with your local mosque and offer your support and solidarity, particularly if you know of far-right activity in your area.

We own . Farage and co have sent us a long legal letter demanding we give it to him. Well, he can have the website... for a million quid, all proceeds to the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (price goes up £50k a day)
Omg this makes me so angry. Who is the ‘you’ he is referring to. Because he’s right, they could do it to ‘you’ but they already do it to black and brown people.
In 2019, the Foreign Affairs Select Committee warned that “a policy that focuses exclusively on closing borders will drive migrants to take more dangerous routes, and push them into the hands of criminal groups". Priti Patel was on this committee. They know the dangers.
