🦝 screencaps things, currently fanghua, though lyb, zhen huan, henjun, & xiyao may still appear. not spoiler-free but often cryptic. bears of all kinds, 🫴🍵.
one of the things that kills me about xiyao is that in balance to all the grand tragedy, they’re a just a pair of people who genuinely like each other and enjoy spending time together
thinking this morning again about the privileging of sibling relationships in the narrative - how jgy likely believes lwj will always come first for lxc, and how, at the end, when lxc finally chooses jgy instead, jgy pushes him away - to safety - and also right into lwj’s arms
thinking tonight about how young lxc used to visit his mother, captive, imprisoned by his father, and how young jgy lived with his mother, captive, whose freedom his father would not buy
so, after jgy tells jl the story about being kicked down the jinlintai, he starts speaking, as if to himself, about how it wasn’t that he didn’t want to be a good man and the hopes he once had about his father, and starts walking away from everyone -
this is a very lqr look - seen in both the earliest flashback as well as the present day, whereas for lxc it appears to be restricted to the few years following sunshot, both his sunshot outfit and his present day outfit are much lighter, both in colour and in the fabric used
getting thrown out of qinghe really does make meng yao double down on the impossibility of being truthful and the determination that he will never again put himself in a subordinate position to someone he cares for
i think one of the great appeals of xiyao, and why they're such exceptions for each other, is that they're each able to give the other person things the other person had learned never to expect from anyone, because, in both cases, they're the only one who really cared to look.
i have said it before, and will say it again, but the cultivation world is in the best state we ever see it in the present day, before the plot starts up, and that didn't just happen randomly
i think the timeskip in mdzs means that people don't realise all of jgy's Crimes™ happened over a decade ago, and all he'd been doing in the time between was being a genuinely good leader. like, if those past misdeeds hadn't been discovered...... nothing would've happened
Complicit: Towards An Alternate Reading of CQL's Lan Xichen
📚fake unfinished academic paper masquerading as fic
📚treating canon as historical fiction
📚an absurd framing device
📚ridiculous made-up biographies
📚resistant reading of cql
Lan An met his fated person, founded the Lan sect with them, and when they died, retreated to the temple where he'd been a monk.
Lan Xichen met someone who saved his life and helped him rebuild the Lan sect, and when that person died, well.
thinking today about these two scenes, and that however different the intentions behind the observations are, they are both still examples of people whispering about meng yao and his parentage while he’s standing right there
you know, one of the things i really enjoy about xiyao is that it takes the whole soulmates/love at first sight thing i usually hate and find boring and makes it really mean something both on its own and in how it interacts with the world of the narrative. i just think it’s neat.
i love that you can see more of the robes here - it's very much like his final outfit in its shape and cut, especially in the skirts, but, much like his robes in the empathy sequence, this outfit contains the darker colours with cloud motif, a look that lqr seems to favour
one of the things that always gets me about xiyao is how there is no way in the world they should have been able to have what they had, whatever you interpret it as being, at all, never mind for as long as they had it, and the sheer amount of work maintaining that connection took
i think for some, the tragedy of jgy is that there's a point at which he could have gone a different way, and i think, for me, the tragedy is that he couldn't have
i don’t usually think about jgy going to the lan, but given the different affects he adopts - the good little soldier in qinghe, the flashy attack dog in qishan, the immaculate customer service rep in lanling, it’s interesting to consider what he might have been like in gusu.
*unfurls a 50-ft banner over this account reading 'xiyao's problems are almost entirely external and in circumstances with more and better options there's no reason why things shouldn't be just fine'*
jgy's jin robes (an overview of the 4.5 outfits covering the following time periods: immediately post-sunshot - jzx's wedding, jl's birth - wwx's death, post-wwx - jgs' death, "present day")
thinking today about how jc sacrifices himself for wwx, which no one knows about, and how, from his perspective, wwx is constantly choosing other people over him, even though he’d made that promise to stay with jc
after that glitchy deer photo, i kind of want xiyao where they’re both secretly cryptids and are desperately trying to keep this from one another because they think the other one is a regular human
there's a common theme, every time jgy faces death at nmj's hands (from the first time, when it's just a thought, to the last time, when he takes something with him)
also if you're of the opinion that jgy somehow needs to make up for the damage he's done... what better way than to be doing what he's been doing in the timeskip, instituting things like the watchtowers that benefit most those who've likely been hurt most by the previous upheaval
lrt if all the people jgy killed are just as dead, no matter what his intentions were, all the people he saved are just as alive, and those helped by the systemic things he did probably didn’t care about the purity of his motives
with all the recent jgy/xiyao primers floating around recently, something, i, personally, find it helpful to remember when contemplating jgy is the extent to which he is not supposed to be part of the narrative, and how the choices he makes are the choices that keep him there.
sometimes i see things that want to make jgy a specific variety of ~evil~ and i’m not trying to say he’s a good person here, but the man has an actual job, there are only so many hours in the day, and he does have priorities that don’t involve non-essential skullduggery & crimes
'kind of a stretch to think LXC would commit murder but ok'

🔗dubious everything
🔗but very pleasant about it
this scene is such an interesting look at internal lan dynamics touching a number of different issues, and gives the sense that, even after sunshot, lxc is not really in full control of the lan in the way you might expect him to be as sect leader
