Today I'm starting a 450+ mile walking journey along the western coast of Michigan
It's a pilgrimage to become closer with my faith, and a version of the Camino de Santiago that's been walked for centuries across Spain. Please pray that God gives me the strength to finish! ✝️

Day 2 (yesterday), 11.5 miles
Brutal walking, feet completely blistered on bottoms. Saw a groundhog climb up a tree. Camped on the beach in just a sleeping bag. Woke up cold, made a tiny fire with beach sticks. Left at 4am and kept walking.

Seven miles into Manistee, then Manistee to Onekama. A priest gave me a tour of a beautiful church that’s no longer in use. Here he is showing how Mass used to be conducted, on the high altar.

Beaches in northern Michigan have prehistoric fossilized coral that washes up, in two patterns called Petoskey stones and Charlevoix stones
I found one along my walk, that had both patterns in one stone, never saw another like it

Started at 4:30am on a rocky, cold beach. Had to climb over boulders, shimmy along a narrow cement wall, dropped my phone into a crevice. Then, beautiful high-up scenes of the lake miles later, near Saugatuck. 🌧️ cut the day short

Day 24 - 29 miles, 349.1 total
Northport to Traverse City. Longest walk day so far. Went into the night along a bike path through farmland. There were many stars above, some bullfrogs croaking in ponds, and even a few fireflies at one point.

Made it to Whitehall. A solitary day along a long, paved path through lush woods w the smell of flower blossoms all around, after the city streets in Muskegon.

Longest day so far. Lighthouse. Kite boarders. New friends for lunch. Dunes trails. A Long Beach walk on great sand. Saw some bald eagles. Made it to Muskegon.

Two nights ago, a guy at a bar said “Oh we saw you guys / you two walking earlier along that road”. Maybe there really is some angel or Saint James helping me along.
Eating alone, the waitress comes up and says: “Can I get you anything else or are you guys all good?”

Day 5 - 15.5 miles, 65.5 total
Made it to Grand Haven from Macatawa, via a long paved walk path along Lakeshore Drive. A mostly solitary day in rain and later dark.
Haven means harbor and I’m glad shelter found me. ✝️

Today I felt another act of great kindness for which I’m so grateful.
My feet are roughed up & I’m resting, my shoes are bad. I told my problem to the priest I met, and he said “what size?”
A few hours later he drove up + brought new shoes (I paid him back). Unreal! ✝️

Glen Arbor to Leland. Walked a bike trail for a while through woods, marshes and farmland with steep woodsy hills ringing around. Saw two Sandhill cranes (huge birds) with two young chicks following them.

Made it to Frankfort from Onekama, after two rest days to heal wounds and get new shoes. Great, fast walking the first ten miles. Many hills. Amazing panoramic view of the lake. Flying squirrel. Long day!

Day 14 (yesterday) - 21 miles, 190.1 total
Had a wonderful experience at the Big Sable Point Lighthouse, on a remote beach along the lake. Hard to explain in a tweet. Interacting with the lighthouse keepers brought tears to my eyes. God is good ✝️

Day 11 - 20.4 miles, 153.1 total
Started in Silver Lake, walked west, saw Lake Michigan for the first time in days. Blue and beautiful. And then to the Little Sable Point Lighthouse, giant and brick, right on the beach. An amazing sight.

Made it to Silver Lake from Montague. Saw the world’s largest weathervane. Got Mexican food in the middle of nowhere, Taco Tuesday. Walked along a paved, solitary path, then on dirt roads late into night.

Made it to Empire from Frankfort along a great, long remote stretch of beach as the sun went down, then walked late at night. Great views of Sleeping Bear Dunes and the bluffs.
Got another lighthouse stamp.

Started in Leland (famed “Fishtown”) on the river, and ended the night sleeping under the control tower of an abandoned rural airport north of Northport.

Empire to Glen Arbor around Sleeping Bear Dunes on the beach. Huge steep bluffs and very few people on the shoreline. Got chilly and windy when the land bends, could see Manitou Islands clearly.

Day 23 - 12 miles, 320.1 total
Woke up at dawn on top of this empty airport building. Raining. Walked trails and beach in the cold rain to the Grand Traverse lighthouse at the tip of Leelanau peninsula. The rain continued like a monsoon.

On the last day of my trip, I came to a town called Cross Village. There's a tall cross there that's stood since the 1800s. I'd carried a stone with me the entire way, from the first day — I said this prayer, and left the stone there. Pilgrims in Spain say this at the Iron Cross.

Feet are demolished. Immense pain but made it to my destination.
Contemplated the crucifixion for miles. Not that this compares to that but maybe that’s why it happened, to prompt that thinking.
Can’t contemplate that level of suffering when I was comfy on the couch.

Lessons learned from this Camino walk:
We can’t do things alone. We need other people (and God working through them), to get us where we need to be. That sounds obvious, but it’s easy to forget, if you’re driven to be self-reliant.

Elk Rapids to Atwood. Had to walk on the rocky shoulder of a highway the whole time. Cherry and apple orchards were everywhere. Getting closer to Santiago.

Stayed in Pentwater for a day to regroup. Great spring flowers everywhere. Had breakfast with a ship captain. Saw fisherman gutting fresh lake fish in a little gazebo along the Main Street.

Yesterday, even one mile was out of the question so I took a rest.
But there’s a big decorative lighthouse outside my hotel so that’s an encouraging Godwink. So I’m back again today on the road.

Just found a flying squirrel!! Never saw one before.
Found it in a garbage can & coaxed it onto a stick I found to help it out. It latched onto the stick, I lifted it and it leaped! Spreading its wings and glided onto the ground, amazing. Didn’t know what it was until then

Late at night, an old bearded man walks to my camp in the dark. I got my Smith & Wesson knife close enough to reach, and my phone ready for 911. He had a UV flashlight and said he was looking for “Yooper rocks”. I’d never heard of them. He finds one, shows me, unreal orange glow!

I think we need time to marvel at the asymmetrical + spontaneous beauty of God’s creation in nature. I’m experiencing that on this trip.
Church pews are rectangular. So is a Bible. A lightning bolt or a forest, a coastline, encounters w wildlife, reminds us of God’s other way.
