Almost getting kicked out of Harvard for doing my stats project on "Does the East Asian Studies Department at Harvard have an Asian Fetish?". That one hit the white male department head a little too close to home.
Thinking how some neighborhood names give indication as to your flooding risk. I live in Crown HEIGHTS so my streets are fine. At my kid’s school in Park SLOPE cars are barely making it through…
@Matt_Schrader_
It was scary as a 19 year old inside a powerful institution you were supposed to be lucky to be in. But now I’m kind of impressed we actually went so far with the study. Pat on the back to our 2001-02 year old selves.
@dj
The conclusion was yes! Then the dept head got wind of our project, threatened administrative board review unless we changed our project. One teammate was really worried about getting kicked out of school so we changed to a super lame subject last minute.
@BryanVanNorden
That is a fascinating article! IRL I identify Asian fetish men out in the wild by the non blinking stare they give as if you are an object they would like to buy. A shiny new car. It’s the inhumanity of the gaze.
I asked another teammate to refresh my memory of events of the infamous stats project! Program director found out, dragged 2 of the team "into his office and threatened to Ad Board us. I think you and me were pretty blasé about it but A was freaking out. B didn't show because he
San Francisco
@BART
just now. Guy w/lots of eggs came on and starting yelling to me and the Asian girl next to me “stupid Chinese bitch”. A man on the bus stepped in & the guy started throwing eggs at him. Guy got off bus threw eggs through window. We all have egg in our hair!!
thought he wouldn't be able to control his temper." FYI the Ad Board at Harvard was equivalent of being thrown up onto the guillotine. Very few students came back from it & at the time it had the reputation of being anti-student.
The Ad-Board also had jurisdiction over such things as sexual assault at school, which almost never came out in favor of the victim. So every student was terrified of going before the ad-board.
And since some of you really nice people have dragged my husband into this I'll put out there for the record that my 3 college boyfriends were Asian & are great dudes. I met the man who became my husband in my late '20s in Bolivia and malheuresement he is French 🤣
It’s crazy that this huge plot of land on Manhattan’s east side remains undeveloped after all these years. 3 blocks long and one avenue wide. There are literally Manhattan schist outcroppings still in the middle.
As promised I checked the hard drive. There's a Stats100 folder but anything related to the orig proj is missing as well as the final proj. I remembered I think person A was so shaken & said "We have to destroy the evidence!!"
This is my little haven inside the NYPL. It’s a “secret” keycard only room just for book writers & I have my own shelf here where books magically appear! Maybe today I’ll muster up the guts to talk to the writer who is writing his book on legal pad.
I spoke with the nice guy who stepped in for all of us after when we got off the bus together. “Better me than you” he told me. There are wonderful people about in this world too.
This was my friend & the father of my daughter's friend. This is the 2nd person I know to be killed by a truck in a bike accident in NYC THIS YEAR. As a biking advocate & frmr board member of
@BKGreenway
: street safety in this city is unacceptable. RIP.
Oops 4 year old took “Go the F*ck to Sleep” as her book to share at school yesterday. Serious judgment this morning when she recounted what her teacher said to her.
@hering_david
He’s not there anymore (and he died). But you should talk to
@MosesNYC
who has not only been to the dentist but also into the spire! This is from a bygone era of us urban explorers.
First hand account from friends in Brooklyn of covid vaccines expiring at end of day yesterday and health care workers were making sure they were used by calling friends and literally "offering the vaccine to randos on the street.”
Update on SF egg man! It’s been a few months since I was attacked on the bus but he has been arrested recently & will be arraigned in court within the week. the power of Twitter truly showed itself in this story. A 🧵1/

Unfortunately your online form is buggy and also won’t accept the videos because they are too large. Can you send alternative method of reporting this?
Dare I say one of the most handsome specimens of a letter box I’ve ever seen. Look at that polishing! (at 330 7th Ave where I was having a quintet rehearsal for my Carnegie Hall concert!)
@ruemcclammyhand
I was told that my photography was too “safe” because I was an Asian “good girl” and did what I was told my whole life. My photos have been published in more places than my teacher now whose name I forget.
It’s been a dream of mine since I was small to own an old house in the Berkshires, a place where I spent vacations with my family. Here I learned to ski, played cello at Tanglewood, got married, and kept coming back. Now I’ll be able to say I wrote my book (partially) here!
I should know this but…are tractor trailers this big allowed on NYC streets? This is a residential street and an elementary school is right there. The truck couldn’t even make the right turn.
@TransAlt
Another reason talking to people while traveling is fun (besides meeting my husband!). My seatmate on the plane turned out to be head of international relations for the City of Paris & former chief of staff for Mayor Hidalgo. He invited me for tea at City Hall!
@andreahazen
@JessePesta
No, I cover that in the article. Neither 1 Madison nor 11 Madison is landmarked (except for the tower) and the skybridge was specifically excluded in the designation form for the National Register (which offers no legal protection) which includes both bldgs.
“Today I’m in the old days,” Charlotte said, while typing away. She told me not to pressure her about what to write & that she needs to review it when she’s done. A true writer in training!!
I turned in my manuscript for The Art Spy! 285 pages of a freaking exciting untold story about one of the bravest women I’ve come across. Now, vacation!
@bizmitchell
@HarperOneBooks
These are the things I go to photograph in this pandemic and people look at me like I’m insane. (What I’m thinking: the Croton Aqueduct is how we stopped the cholera epidemic!!!)
My five year old daughter
wakes up super early every day and just makes art by herself. Here is today’s creation, a cutout hand drawn Babar! She wants to submit it to Babar magazine where they print children submissions each month.
By “protests are sweeping France” (CNN) I saw literally nothing of note today. I spent the day in the banlieue (suburb) for the archives, took metro & walked half across Paris. Packed cafes & usual activity. Why such disconnect in media coverage of riots outside France? Read on

No way.
@SFMTA_Muni
here’s another rider’s video of separate incident and several other people have commented and had run ins with this man.
Update: I have spoken w/ SFPD & they are moving things forward. If you were on the bus or were targeted by this man in the past please send me a DM as your statement is helpful. I'm on vacation with my family this week but thank you all again for your support! ❤️
In other news, I performed at Carnegie Hall tonight! It was a blast (from the past, literally). Channeling an old version of myself melding into the current version.
My grandmother in law Monique Delmas is 100 years old today! She was a teenager in WWII when her house was commandeered by Nazis. I interviewed her for my book last year. Wish her a happy birthday!
@DinnerWed
It’s actually more of outdated infrastructure plus infill & building in low lying areas or areas that were originally marsh/canals/harbor. This is actually my area of expertise as an urban planner and professor at Columbia. Was just musing on names today in the rain!
I was the victim of a racist attack on the street today with my baby in the stroller and now at police where the upside is meeting this French police cat! I’m fine, just a bit shaken from the experience.
You're looking at the newest member of the
@NYPL
's writers inside a pretty secret room at the 42nd Street library! This is where Robert Caro wrote The Power Broker. Got a cool green vintage lamp, a shelf and a desk to punch out my book, THE ART SPY.
My parents are living it up on a Viking Cruises trip through Belgium (“Perhaps even yourself!!) and sending me super cool stuff like this Dominican church converted into a sick bookstore
Well, we decided to come back to NYC. Seeing the skyline again sparked a crazy sense of joy. We’re doubling down here even though we could stay in France in these crazy Covid times. Living here is exciting, unpredictable and inspiring and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
Excited to announce I’ve been granted another year as a scholar in the NYPL’s Allen Room! I’ll be there to the end of 2024 by which point my book The Art Spy should be out in the world 🎉
I’m excited to share my first piece for
@hyperallergic
on a Van Gogh painting stolen by the Nazis and going on auction today at Christie’s. Thanks to
@hragv
for entrusting me with this story!
I went to deliver a baby and in that time Ozy media was a thing, shutdown and came back to life (?) and I learned it has way fewer unique visitors than
@UntappedNY
. Either we are doing something wrong or right…Here’s the baby by the way not named Ozy!!
Last week, I got to check off another bucket list spot in
#NYC
: the secret bowling alley of the
@frickcollection
. I even got to bowl a few balls (badly!). The underground lair also contains a pool table original to Frick’s time!
My uncle just died of COVID-19. A pioneer as my dad calls him, who left Taiwan at an early age to Brazil. Here he is at my wedding, full of spirit as he was known for. The last time I saw him, he brought us the fruit liquors he was concocting in Brazil during his retirement. RIP.
I’m at the press opening of Grand Central Madison! I try the be the Ms. First of NYC infrastructure & architecture openings. (Kudos if you know the reference to Mr. First).
BIG NEWS!!! I just signed with
@fletcherco
and now part of the literary agency that reps Nina de Grammont, John Carreyrou (Bad Blood about Theranos),
@LaurieStories
, Sonia Purnell who wrote one of my favorite books! More to come on my top secret story!!
One year of pandemic and my daughter has gone from baby to teenager. She got her first marriage proposal, is fluent in French, and her Taiwanese is limited to the word “fart”.
Here I am on
@abc7newsbayarea
news talking with
@MelanieWoodrow
about the racist egg attack I experienced on MUNI in San Fran. Got to throw in some urban planning speak & use my

training to use. He picked on the wrong Asian gal!
Officially back at work from maternity leave! Took 4 months off because…well, I’m the boss! New year for me and new office for

When you arrive at the airport to fly to France and took your baby’s passport by accident. Will I pass for Emma? Thankfully you have the best parents who are racing to you with passport.
This is a very cool tool using real time flood sensors—project that’s only partly underway. The intersection quite close to the earlier video has a sensor
@The_ChrisBryant
@bart
Thanks Chris. Every time it happens I have a moment of, wait who me? I had to ask the girl next to me after if he was talking to us. We both opted to stay silent which is sadly the best move even though I’d love to be more assertive. What if it was more than eggs right?
.
@CNN
reached out to share my story of meeting my husband Augustin backpacking! Pretty fun to nostalgically look back & laugh at the cultural differences discovered along the way
Thank you all for the support everyone ❤️❤️ it’s been an eventful 30 hour visit to SF. It was egg-cellent apart from today’s MUNI incident (couldn’t resist the joke).
Any of the NYC pols now saying they’re committed to addressing climate crisis care to comment on the scuttling of the original
@BjarkeIngels
plan for East River Park that accomodated stormwater vs. the revised plan that builds higher hard edges experts all know doesn’t work?
So in love with this fierce little girl who insists on doing everything her sister does including a zipline! A photographer nearby happened to snap this moment in Paris spontaneously and sent me the photo!
Today is my birthday! So far it is filled with highs and lows like 2020. A dear friend is struggling with COVID and it breaks my heart. How can one see this suffering and not feel that they want the world to be a better, safer, fairer, kinder place? That’s my bday wish! ❤️ to all
This is one of my favorite places in the world. It’s a former smugglers hut on the border of France & Spain that has a restaurant you can only get to by hiking. A lot of WWII escapes through these mountains. I’ve been coming here for more than a decade now!
Throwback to 11 years ago today when I was cast in the Steven Soderbergh film Side Effects! He wanted a cellist for a funeral scene & I got to work with him directly on which piece to play which was a great highlight of my life. It was def a fun break from my land use law exams.
