For a society so fixated on body weight, we know shockingly little about how it works.
In 2023, as we fully embraced weight-loss drugs, that became even more apparent.

TIL high schools kids in the US are expected to get to class before 8am which...... sounds like a sick joke at the expense of literally everyone involved
@rachel
Exactly — I learned about start times by reading about the last time the US tried permanent DST and kids kept getting hit by vehicles because they were going to school so early, in the dark, clearly a) struggling to see, and b) tired as hell???
@mannyfidel
I can't think of a good reason for the schools to set it at this time — getting out early isn't convenient for kids/parents either. Also forces the Cassies of this world to get up at an even more ungodly hour to do their makeup/exfoliation routines when they hit their Maddy era

How interested Britons are in watching the show Harry and Meghan have agreed to make with Netflix:
Very/fairly interested: 12%
Not very/not at all: 84%
@rachel
Huh! Hadn't heard that. What I gather (in part thanks to
@RobertBryan4
) it's a combo of:
-schools have to stagger HS, middle, elementary to avoid thousands of cars arriving at once
-stagger can't start too late bc of parents' work
-HS have after school sport so easier to go first

Let me tell you, you haven’t lived until you’ve been on a date with a bicoastal creative who’s planning to go fight in Ukraine with two of his DJ buddies
For those taking this as a Meghan-Harry put-down, it is v much not. The point is: the UK is not the target audience of this deal so a Brit opinion poll feels... irrelevant. (And Brits will prob watch their stuff anyway).

Reflecting on Granddad’s pure love of

Without a sloped floor?? How bizarre. I would *love* all showers to be open concept for accessibility reasons but typically accessible showers are built so the water funnels into the drain - less messy and stops you from slipping.

“Looking ahead to late March or April, the majority of scientists interviewed by The Times predicted a 4th wave of infections. But they stressed that it is not an inevitable surge, if gvmt officials & individuals maintain precautions for a few more weeks.”
Today's my last day at Business Insider. I've had an incredible time leading BI's healthcare coverage over the past 5 years, and was excited to start with the investigations team this month. I'll be rooting for both groups of incredibly talented reporters from afar.
Yesterday my twin (in the Netherlands) and I both got Pfizer shots.
We just realized: She (right handed) accidentally got it in her right arm. I (left handed) accidentally volunteered my left.
Identical strokes of idiocy that I’ll be marketing as cosmic and cool.

-20 states & DC: sanctuaries
-7 states: gray areas
-Some businesses: employee support
-Abortion funds in the spotlight

Hello world, I've been laid off from Business Insider. I'm very sad and scared right now, and I've got pets to feed! If you know of any editing gigs, please send them my way. I also have some experience in grant writing, and a master's in public health if that helps 🤷♀️

I just found out my (previously one-entry) waiver on the UK-US travel ban will now, finally, be a multiple entry waiver, meaning I can travel home if I need to/in the case of an emergency. Can’t express what a relief this is. So so happy.
For anyone who’s got their second COVID-19 shot coming up: I am so so happy I meal prepped.
I live alone and didn’t want to be in the lurch in case I was knocked out for a couple of days (I was). But I feel like this is useful for anyone, whether you live alone or not.

Must-read thread. Last year, I too paid a $$$ medical bill that I shouldn't have been sent, after a friend in health insurance told me: "if it's under $2,000, it's not worth risking your credit rating."
For this to be a barrier to HIV-prevention in NYC is even more disturbing.
I am paying the bill because i dont want it to impact my credit, and luckily, i can afford it, but i fear for anyone who’s going to the public hospitals and isnt able to pay. It could saddle them with incorrect bills with no method of recourse.
I will never forget the Sunday shift (in a previous job) when an editor sent me this, hours after it was published, and asked if I could “do a version”

I'm looking for someone whose parents divorced when they were grown up/left home, and is up for writing about how it's also very hard to deal with.
All this talk of Gates' kids being grown, suggesting the divorce isn't as hard for them...

Looking forward to delivering more exclusive profiles with star athletes on how they stay at their physical and mental peak.
Blows my mind that the UK charges for COVID tests — and a lot.
I’m looking up rules for people traveling into the UK from “amber countries” (inc the US). They have to show they’ve paid for 2 tests (on day 2 & day 8). It costs £175-300 *per test*.
The US got this one right.
I'm so excited to share that we're expanding the team again, this time overseas:
I'm looking for a UK health editor to join our team.
