Beginning around 1950, nuclear fallout, plastic particles, and massive amounts of concrete start to amass in the geological record. The evidence is clear, a new op-ed argues: We have entered the Anthropocene.

@sciencewrighter @bethpratt @PabloJBarillas A great guide to west coast butterflies is Arthur Shapiro’s field guide to Sacramento and environs — not where Beth is seeing this mourning cloak but most of the butterflies overlap. I’ve only ever seen a description of the fact that mourning cloaks do this — never why.

Honored to be preaching the beaver gospel this weekend in Paonia, where my journalistic journey began. Thanks to @ColoFarmFood and @WestSlopeCenter for having me — and to @SemiEmily, owner of Paonia Books, for giving this town the literary hub it deserves!

Truly that @wapo editorial about 8 billion fabulous beings ripping through our life support system was monumentally depressing. How can they be so dumb? Why won't they actually do the research, or at least take an ecology class?

Hi there, to round out your weekend, you've officially been notified that there's endemic Mexican maize that has aerial roots that use bacterial colonies to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere. It looks like this. You needed to know that.

I’m afraid this is right that we will not “optimize” for fairness or anything else except growth until indeed it is no longer possible; it seems we are on an unconscious rollercoaster.

When it comes to beaver, I do what @ben_a_goldfarb says is right, so now follow @MDigout99 and more doings of our favorite aquatic/terrestrial critter! Geniuses despite that smallest brain to body ratio among mammals. Hope for us all.

If you're a beaver aficionado who's not following @MDigout99, you're seriously missing out. Most interesting 🦫 behavior content on the internet and it ain't close.

Great new issue of a highly useful, under-the-radar publication: Including great news about beaver restoration in California, and a link to the incomparable John Hart's overview of Bay Delta discontents. (In sum, we are crazy, especially concerning water.)
