@ask_aubry
“The only genuinely messed up thing we’ve done…” It’s ALL messed up, weirdo! They’re only doing this to take her down a peg and he has the audacity to act like he didn’t “expect” to hurt her
@chlosarge
Moved into a house with five other people and one was the master tenant who met with the landlord to pay rent and picked roommates. The first thing my dad told me was, “make sure he’s paying rent and not making you guys pay his rent.”
@fairyfemmes
Wtf. My friend and I got hate crimed in *NYC* because my friend asked someone got a cigarette. Someone in Arizona deliberately ran me down with their car. Who tf are these people who are happy about hate crimes….
Weird question, but can you guys tell me about hobbies that have brought you the most joy? I’ve been feeling pretty flat emotionally and jaded about journalism lately, and I’m trying to find outlets in my life that are uplifting and healthy
My cousin studied behavioral psychology and she’s always said that it’s hard for people to accept that mass shooters aren’t usually mentally ill because we then have to confront the fact that they chose such an action, unclouded, and believed it to be the right one.
I can't move past how extremely unethical it is to conduct this interview, let alone run it, when this man obviously does not know Spanish and is trying to force "gotcha" answers from someone who doesn't know what he's saying. It lazy at best and exploitative at worst.
I want young journalists to know that watching the dreams you had for your life get sacrificed at the altar of journalism isn’t a noble thing. The indignity of it is revolting. It feels painful just to be alive. And you don’t have to accept that for the sake of journalism
@blackriverx
@davenewworld_2
Almost every time some lowlife like this ever harassed me at a hockey game, his girl is either giggling to herself or, if I tell him to back off, she stands up like she’s ready to fight me over some loser who acts like this in public. It’s sad
@Chinchillazllla
I had to close this app and stare at the ceiling for a few minutes when someone said you were “shaming them for ‘eating trash food.’” I sent my husband’s coworkers desserts once bc they were gonna be busy that day and their vending machine food sucked turns out I was shaming them
I don't know who needs to hear this but if communities of color are not engaging with you or attending your outreach events, it's because they either don't know you or don't like you. Own it and fix it. Stop blaming them for your failures and "poor participation."
A person wearing a MAGA hat shot someone protesting Rio Arriba County reinstating the statue of conquistador Juan de Oñate. It is a hideous reminder of the violence behind the desire to preserve colonialist "history" in New Mexico. I am so angry national media ignores us so much.
As the journalism industry falls apart I can’t help but feel used as a Latina journalist. All these efforts to build race-based beats, hire diversely and have speakers of many languages on staff were merely trendy, not meaningful. Last ones in, first ones out.
@INDIEWASHERE
This dude took me a bunch of places one night, even introduced me to his friends, told me he loved me to the point that I thought we’d need to have a convo later about where we were headed and the next day he goes, “Yeah so I’m not looking for anything serious.” 🥴
I will never figure out how people hate New Mexico. There’s a DIY music festival in this random neighborhood, everyone is down to drink and dance, every house is so whimsical, spicy food is king. If you hate NM, there’s something inside you that you need to heal.
@davenewworld_2
It will never make sense to me how every grimy, lowlife sports fan has a girl either laughing along or ready to square up for him no matter how vile and racist he gets
So
@AP
fires a young, Jewish reporter for being in a pro-Palestine group in college as if that is inherently bad but the folks who fueled this nonsense get to call her an "unhinged Marxist agitator" knowingly stoking abuse toward her and get away with it. oh ok
@SheRatesDogs
The whiplash from "you give me butterflies" to nipple clamps and bondage to income to mini golf is not something I could have ever prepared for
If you’re going to be a journalist you need to understand the difference between what your community cares about and what the people who email the newsroom care about.
@proyearner
You could end up like me and give up on dating for the last few years of your 20s, unexpectedly meet a great person at a hang out when you’re 30 and be married three years later 🤷🏽♀️
I’m begging y’all to stop praising every new program and fellowship as “saving journalism” when the majority of people in those programs are overworked 20-something’s in their first or second job making $27k
@DattaNilanjan
@_B___S
I think animals can tell what the young of certain species are. One of my guinea pigs will call out to crying child like she did to her own babies. She’s also done it before at the vet when a puppy was whimpering.

You act like women who wear makeup are never without. My fiancé has seen me with a lot of flashy makeup and none at all. He likes both and he respects what I want to look like that day. Sorry that doesn’t make sense to you
@BienSur_JeTaime
This is me in Mexico. I eat whatever I want, whenever I want and lose weight 😭 Be careful coming back, though. I often feel like I have food poisoning the first 24 hours back in the U.S.
This is my final call before giving up. Does anyone have FULL TIME journalism positions that will let me work from New Mexico? I am proficient in race/identity, education, public policy and health reporting. Job must meet ALL of this criteria. Please do not send me anything less
I’m going to be honest, everyone. I am not doing well. I am still looking for a new journalism opportunity, but beyond that, I need access to mental health services. I feel like I lost my ability to live life without worry and depression. Very little makes me happy. (1/2)
Some professional news: I have accepted a position with
@thenewmexican
! I will start off doing some general assignment work and rebuilding the paper’s immigration beat. My first day is Monday.
@punished_cait
Recently saw a guy talking about how he kept having a “weird encounter” with a teenage boy on a bike who would bark at him as they passed each other and wanted to know if anyone knew his parents. He was convinced the kid was disturbed instead of just annoying
It's come to my attention that my sexual harasser in college is being exposed in the cosplay community for his behavior, and I wanted to say this: Gil Riego Jr. attempted to blackmail me in exchange for "sexy" photos when we were in college. Newsroom managers, DO NOT hire him.
I’ve been unemployed almost a year. I have freelance work, but I’m finding it less fulfilling as time goes on. I feel like I’m nobody. I have nothing to offer anyone. This industry is awful. I am so deeply sad, folks.
@jzux
Whenever I went to a party in college that sucked, I’d steal a bottle of alcohol and leave. I don’t know what possessed me to do it, and I know even less why I did it repeatedly. It was some primal urge. I’ve never stolen from anywhere except this.
We came to Sedona for our anniversary weekend as boyfriend and girlfriend, and we’re coming back as fiancés. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with my best friend. I love you, Nate! ❤️
Journalists here's something we can stop in 2023! Stop valorizing destroying your body/mind/relationships. Ask yourself why you need negative attention. What are you trying to prove? Who do you want to look better than? Why are you so angry at those who "don't" suffer?
Though things are looking up, it’s time to announce that I will be on leave through December. My mental health has interfered with how present I’ve been this year. I can’t help feeling like I failed. But I know I can serve South Phoenix better when I’m well. See you all in 2022.
@Phil_Lewis_
New Mexico. Beautiful landscapes, its own (delicious) food culture, lots of interesting history, incredible art scene, yet it’s not talked about as if it’s a destination. My husband and I randomly decided to go last year, and now it’s home
@TheMcKenziest
The recruitment for these classes, too, is appalling. I did one year of it because I was misled into thinking it wasn’t “real” PE and that it was an easy A. That was kinda true, but they also said it “wasn’t really” about the military. That was categorically false
I don’t know what news editor needs to hear this, but we should not be letting families deadname or misgender their trans children in the paper. Not when they’re alive, and especially not when they die
@howieazy
At around 4 I realized that every other human and animal on earth has a whole separate life that you’ll never really know or understand and I’ve been weird ever since
"I am pretty sure everybody [in Puerto Rico] is excited," Camacho-Quinn told reporters. "For such a small [territory] it gives little people hope. I am just glad I am the person to do that.

Mexico Week on the Great British Bake-off is concretely reminding me of how flat and static white people view food from Latin American countries. Not only have they oversimplified Mexican food, but they’ve applied that revisionist view of it to all Latin American countries.
I’ve been scooped on my personal news so I guess it’s time I say it: I am joining
@azcentral
for my 2nd year w/
@report4america
, where I will be covering Latino and African-American communities in South Phoenix. I also expect to eat a lot of Mexican food.
And while I'm here, this goes for ANYONE trying to be a reporter: Be HONEST about your ability to speak Spanish. Don't take your high school Spanish to the field for your own interests and interview people you're not properly communicating with.
Last night I had a brief mental health crisis. I screamed and cried for about five minutes until I was able to catch my breath and lie down. My neighbor called the police. It was the most embarrassing, scary, dehumanizing thing that could’ve happened
Better journalism means tearing the whole model down completely. Burn it to the ground if you can’t stop yourself from picking at the remains. Some of you are so loyal to a brutal system. Ask yourselves why.
Some professional news: I am now freelancing for
@source_nm
and will be covering New Mexico’s Legislative session. I’m so excited to be working with a team of passionate, talented journalists I admire. My first story just dropped today 👇🏽
@themultiplemom
@SFdirewolf
I nannied a little girl who said she wanted avocado. She insisted it was avocado NOT guacamole. So I gave her avocado and she said it didn’t taste the same. So I made it into guacamole and asked her if she liked that better. Yes, it was guacamole she wanted.
Tomorrow I’m starting, what the psychiatrist and I are hoping, a short-term regimen of Zoloft. Before the pandemic, I managed my anxiety well. Three weeks after I moved to Phoenix, the panic attacks started. I’m a little scared. Scared it won’t work. Scared it will. Wish me luck.
Reporters on Twitter: Grind culture in journalism is so toxic. You deserve food and rest!!
Also reporters on Twitter: I actually haven’t eaten in 72 hours and I’m gnawing on espresso beans so I don’t have to sleep 😌
@JoshuaPotash
I'll never forget when myself and a bunch of my friends, including a friend from New Zealand, went out for dinner and had to split the bill/figure out the tip. She just stared into the void while we tried to calculate the tip and then shouted "Oh my god, I HATE America."
I’m begging recipe creators to learn more about Mexican ingredients and seasonings. That flavor you’re tasting is often NOT chili powder and you could never replicate it with chili powder. Try something else.
The top five burrito locales in the U.S. are as follows:
1. Los Angeles
2. Phoenix/Tucson (tie)
3. San Diego
4. Dallas (also willing to accept San Antonio)
5. Albuquerque
I will not be taking questions at this time.
No one tells you that when you leave New Mexico after having red and green chile on everything you become feral and slowly descend into madness without it
If anyone knows of any journalism jobs that pay well and will let me work in New Mexico, please let me know. I’m bilingual (Spanish) and proficient in covering race and equity. Let me help you reach a wide range of communities with thorough, thoughtful reporting
Not the New Mexico cooking group on FB rejecting my Hatch chile pasta for “not being relevant to New Mexico” when I live in Santa Fe and I’m celebrating chile season like all good-hearted people 🥴
@punished_cait
Oh wait I forgot the cherry on top. Someone made fun of him and he said he was being discriminated against for his opinion and then a bunch of ppl started hand-wringing about the kid possibly “identifying as a dog” bc apparently, in their minds, that’s what kids do these days
@Rob_ThaBuilder
@nytimes
Your read this and think the point is about a *movie*? The NY Times made a reporting error, and that error is in line with how much of the stories of the Manhattan Project, WWII and Oppenheimer himself are told. Sorry you’re having such a difficult time empathizing.
How I look wearing headphones in the office: So focused. Very professional. Deep in thought. Pulitzer Prize in the making.
My headphones, at full volume: UNDER THE SEA, UNDER THE SEA DARLING IT'S BETTER DOWN WHERE IT'S WETTER TAKE IT FROM ME
Some ✨personal news✨
@NateBrownNews
got a tremendous opportunity in Santa Fe (stay tuned), and we will be moving there in early July. My last day at the Republic is June 22. I will be taking a break, but if you know of job openings in Santa Fe, send them my way!
I’m seeing a lot of people respond “Oh so he was mentally healthy?” What we need to understand is mental illnesses are specific disorders with specific symptoms and discernible patterns.
@punished_cait
I put my husband in my bio and that stops exactly zero weirdos from bothering me and this clearly shows that knowing you’re married isn’t stopping them from being creepy
@G8090Tom
@chlosarge
Because you’re subsidizing someone else’s living. I’m not going to pay extra so someone else can live for free. If they were honest and said they needed help or something then I’d consider it. But not if they’re going to try to keep it a secret to avoid paying
On this anniversary of the Trinity Test, as the Oppenheimer movie is a frequent topic of conversation, please remember the first victims of nuclear weapons were Indigenous and Latino New Mexicans.
The fact that AP refused to defend her when the going got tough highlights exactly what folks have been saying all day: only the powerful survive. The rules only apply to the vulnerable.
My therapist: “You’re a journalist. I’m sure you’re great at seeing things objectively and distinguishing what’s real and what isn’t. Why can’t you apply that to yourself?”
Me:
Anyone looking for an essay on how journalism reinforces racism through low pay of JOC, layoffs and cuts because it inevitably leads to further devaluation of labor that doesn't necessarily produce stories like competent outreach and community building. Because I have thoughts.
ASK your source if they can understand you. Don't let pride corrupt the story. This clip obviously goes beyond being an issue of being too proud, but seriously, don't catch yourself looking like this.
Hey Mikey, I don’t appreciate you lying about HR’s investigation into my testimony. It was not about “general frustration.” I was YELLED AT by a person your company employs to finish a story, and I worked unpaid overtime because of it. This is a culture issue at Gannett
@newsguild
Gannett CEO Mike Reed's letter to NewsGuild
"...your efforts to tarnish Gannett's reputation are counterproductive + do not well serve your union or its members. Instead, false claims + attempts to manipulate public opinion serve only to create mistrust"
