Helen's son is the Roughriders’ Senior Journalist and Historian — and the author of a new book. Brave Face, from Triumph Books, about maskless goalies.
Sometimes, life gives you little gifts you don’t expect, when they can really help. A year ago today, my mom died. Today, the weekly weigh-in being on Fridays, I was pleased to discover that I have lost 100 pounds. I will never lose sight of what Mom and Dad gave me. I ♥️ them.
Anonymous Twitter trolls are among the lowest forms of humanity. If you have an opinion, wear it. Own it. Put your name -- your full name -- beside it, like I do with everything that I write. It really isn't that difficult to do! Anonymous opinions are worthless.
Cody Fajardo didn’t let anyone down. He played his heart out today with TWO oblique tears and played such an integral role in a season that will long be remembered — treating everyone like pure gold along the way. A total class act.
Thank you
#Riderville
for accepting me as one of your own. We were counted out from the start of the season, & you all stuck with us. I am sorry I let you down tonight. Even though I want to look forward to next year I can’t help but think about how wonderful this year was.
First pizza in 10 months! My Christmas present to myself. The new socks will have to wait. The previous pizza was 101 pounds ago. Every bite was joyous. Thank you to Darrell Vipond and Fired Up Grill!
I would just like to thank everyone for all the wonderful e-mails, tweets and Facebook messages today. I will respond to everyone personally to express my appreciation. But for every message I answer, two more arrive. I have never had a day like this. I am so grateful. ♥️
Don’t forget that, just one week ago, Brett Lauther made a 43-yard, walk-off field goal to put the Roughriders in position to clinch first place today.
Luckily a game doesn’t define who I am as a man. Today was rough but my family and friends still love me and that’s all that counts! 1st in the west

I would like to meet Brayden Camrud — not necessarily for an interview, but just to shake his hand and tell him that I am in awe of him. What an amazing young man.
I wish I could cover the Roughriders’ opener tonight, to begin a 50th season of obsessively following the team. But at least THIS happened on June 19, 2020. I was 262.8 pounds in late November.
YES!!!!! We adopted Candy, our foster dog, from
@reginahumane
this afternoon! We ♥️ her so much and we are so grateful for everything the Regina Humane Society has done to help us and, more importantly, Candy. She is the GREATEST dog! Thank you!!!!
Chris Jones in mid-June, after releasing veteran receivers Rob Bagg, Bakari Grant and Chad Owens: “It’s a young man’s game, unfortunately.” Chris Jones on Sunday: Works out Terrell Owens, 44.
BIGGGG milestone today — 40 years since
@MMandryk
first entered the
@leaderpost
newsroom. Amazing career — and he is still brilliant and at the top of his game. I am SO proud to call him a colleague and, better yet, a dear friend. Congratulations, Mur, and Happy Mandriversary!
Today’s GREAT person salute honours
@shaq_evans1
for standing up for what is right and denouncing those who have it all wrong. Anyone who questions his love of Sask has it all wrong, too. He could have tested free agency after a sensational 2019 season, but he re-signed with Sask
Friday could have been my last day at the Leader-Post, but I was kindly allowed to extend it by one day — in order that I may cover a
@WHLPats
game, one last time. Here's the story, with heartfelt thanks to everyone for everything. It has been an honour.
Congratulations to Bombers defensive co-ordinator Richie Hall — now a four-time Grey Cup champion. He is the only Roughrider to have played or coached in three Grey Cup victories. Now this. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
@CodyFajardo17
is a gem of a person and a player and the Riders are blessed to have him.
The answer is to build around him. Anything else is sheer nonsense.
The Regina police gave us $2800 tickets for speaking at the Freedom Rally this afternoon. Of course we’re going to fight these unconstitutional tickets in court!
I proudly wear a button given to me that says this is the price of freedom of speech in Saskatchewan.
Today's GREAT person salutes Nicole Woods and Chris Woods — Warren Woods' children. Woodsy absolutely beamed when he talked about them. They have been so brave, so remarkable, for these past few weeks. I hope all the expressions of love and support provide solace and strength.
I'd like to take a moment to thank the doctors, nurses and everyone at the Regina General Hospital for being so kind and caring with Mom today. She had a COPD flare-up and is now in a comfortable bed, in the care of wonderful people, feeling grateful.
Mark Guy, who made two key catches to set up Dave Ridgway’s Grey Cup-winning field goal in 1989, is at Mosaic Stadium to watch the
@sskroughriders
play Toronto. He is the godfather of Argos linebacker Wynton McManis.
Gordon Gilroy, our amazing equipment manager, observed this morning that if you add up the numbers of the date of George Reed’s passing (10.01.23), the total amounts to 34. 🙏
I am so impressed with Matthew Chekay of the Estevan Bruins, paying tribute to Adam Herold as he did. Great young man from a first-class organization. Nipawin Hawks are also top-notch. Thanks to both teams for being amazing on a difficult night.
Six months ago today, Candy arrived at
@reginahumane
. She had been neglected and mistreated before the amazing people at the Humane Society rescued her. We brought her home April 21, as a foster dog, and adopted her a week later. Thank you to the RHS for the gift of Candy.
How amazing was Dale Hawerchuk? I wrote to him c/o
@NHLJets
in 1982, requesting an autograph. Yes, I got the autograph — and so much more! He must have been deluged with fan mail, but he still made time to go above and beyond. Sincere condolences to
@EricHawerchuk
and family.
Riders president-CEO Craig Reynolds told a Regina Chamber of Commerce luncheon crowd that if the Riders win the Grey Cup, the first place they take the trophy will be Humboldt.
Cody Fajardo is the first person to quarterback Saskatchewan to at least 12 victories in a season since Ron Lancaster in 1970. Riders went 14-2 that year. The Riders won 12 games during Kerry Joseph's MOP year of 2017, but Marcus Crandell was the winning QB on one occasion.
In the CFL, you can grab someone's facemask in a "reckless and unsafe manner" and still be allowed to finish the game — which is a reckless, unsafe move on the part of the CFL.
I grew up in Regina and am very old. I never thought I would see the Riders play in (and win) a Grey Cup at Taylor Field. Nor did I ever imagine seeing an NHL regular-season game in a NEW stadium in my favourite burg. Better yet, J-E-T-S! Happy New Year! ✈️
Not a news flash, but it's so true: George Reed is a wonderful human being. Every interaction with this great man, regardless of the purpose or the duration, is an absolute joy.
Really just came to the stadium to listen to O Canada.
And watch De Grasse get his medal.
Moments away now. Gold morning Canada.
I mean, good morning. I mean both.
I went to high school from Grades 8 to 12 and took social studies each year. Not even one second of class time was devoted to D-Day. Still shaking my head. I hope the curriculum is far better today. Every student should know and appreciate what happened 75 years ago.
Connor Bedard, meet Jeff Friesen. On Dec. 27, 1991, Jeff Friesen — a 15-year-old call-up from the Saskatoon Blazers — scored two goals for the Pats in his WHL debut.
Who saw this coming in February? Riders made a big pitch for Bo Levi Mitchell, but ended up signing Collaros as a fallback. Collaros outplayed Bo in West semi-final. Cody Fajardo's signing was a virtual afterthought and he ended up bumping Collaros. They will meet in West final.
Thank you to
@ClarkMunroe
for sending me the “before” photo (Jan. 28, 2020, Rod Pedersen Show). In the “after” photo, taken mere minutes ago, my glasses seem to have grown.
This beautiful girl will be featured on the
@reginahumane
telethon Sunday night. Candy was a RHS foster dog — for only seven days. We loved her instantly and adopted her midway through the foster term (April 28, 2021). Please support the RHS and all the other Candys of the world.
Ruminations after a virtually sleepless night: Suppose that the CFL season had gone ahead. Suppose that the Roughriders had finished second in the West. They would be playing host to the West semi-final on Sunday — with a forecast of up to 50 centimetres of snow. Can you imagine?
Today’s GREAT person salute honours everyone who waded into the storm while we stayed indoors to restore power and normalcy, such as it is these days. I can’t imagine trying to fix a power line with chilling winds exceeding 100 km-h. Thank you.
We brought Candy home eight months ago today. She was so terrified (left). Now she is the happiest dog and we ♥️ her so much. Thank you,
@reginahumane
!
Everything the CFL doesn't want to see and it happens on the first offensive series of the season. Zach Collaros is rightfully irate at the cheap shot.
I would love to see Darian Durant to come out of retirement and play for the Roughriders. He deserves the proper ending in green and white, and he would be an upgrade. So .....
