Why are South Africans still required/expected to wear a mask in malls and supermarkets (and other public places)? It seems to me it's well past time to move beyond this
I'll give Herman Mashaba one thing. He's drawn strong voter support in Johannesburg from both the leafy suburbs and the townships. No other party has done that, and I think it stands Action SA in good stead for the next national election.
Illegal cigarettes for sale all over Joburg. Offered a 20-pack at the traffic lights today, unsolicited, for R80. The underworld is loving the lockdown!
Tobacco sales remain banned, despite CR's announcement. More arbitrary decision making. If government continues to infringe our civil liberties, there is going to be a justified revolt. (I don't smoke.)
Even if he got a little hot under the collar (I would have, too), Gareth Cliff's rational deconstruction of a clueless trendy lefty was, quite frankly, marvellous to watch. We need more of this!
I am confused about Pravin Gordhan. He did a great job at Sars and an okay job (by most accounts) as finance minister. But in his dogged insistence on rescuing a basket case of an airline at any cost he's throwing away his legacy. Why? Is it purely ideological madness?
Cyril Ramaphosa really needs to face journalists' questions after delivering these addresses to the nation. Scandalous that he doesn't. A robust democracy demands it!
People will support lockdown rules, but not when they are arbitrary and that arbitrariness tramples basic civil liberties with little or no justification. Government has overstepped the line.
Is
#Clicks
apologising good enough?
@ShahanR
reckons there must be accountability, especially when it comes to

. He also calls out some people who are only focusing on the protests and not the hurt caused by the advert.

I had a call with my Brother, President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela🇻🇪 yesterday. Our two countries share a close and deep historical bond based on friendship, solidarity and cooperation.
Where is the communication from government on level 3? Are we literally going to have to wait until 11.59pm on 31 May before the lockdown is relaxed, because that's the latest the president said it would be done by? Get it done already!
Just took a walk through the Northgate mall. What a horror show. At least 20% of stores taped up (closed permanently), another 30%+ closed due to load shedding. Of four cellular shops, only Vodacom trading (MTN, Telkom, Cell C shut). The impact on the economy is immense...
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will visit South Africa later this month (Bloomberg) - It's like the ANC is deliberately trying to sabotage South Africa
Is it only me who gets annoyed when I see local news publications spelling TV programme as program, standardise as standardize and litre as liter? Are we all Americans now?
1. SAA competes unfairly using state subsidies. 2. The continuous bailouts amount to theft from taxpayers and diversion of resources from the poor. 3. It could go bust at any moment, leaving passengers out of pocket. I will NOT fly on this airline if I can possibly avoid it!
How sad that many fellow South Africans don’t buy into the ecosystem approach of putting their own first. For me
@flysaa
is my first choice as a. extension of self love in addition to the fact that it’s the best in every way
Lots of angry people in these streets about the continued ban on unfettered e-commerce, and with good reason. Government needs to rethink this urgently.
The DA is warning that voting for a smaller party on the national ballot is a wasted vote. This is a scare tactic and untrue. The DA has no chance of winning the national election. Vote for the party that most appeals to you and that you'd like to see represent you in parliament
A change of government, followed by massive and painful austerity measures and structural, pro-market reforms are the only things that can save South Africa now. And the chances of those things happening are close to zero. Please tell me I am being unnecessarily pessimistic.
Kudos where it's due.
@waldimar
is doing a great job with Rapport. My Afrikaans is crap, but I now make a point of buying and reading it every week (albeit slowly).
As testing ramps up, there will naturally be a bigger increase in Covid-19 cases in South Africa. Headlines screaming about big increases in cases are click-bait
"National Coronavirus Command Council expected to meet." <-- Not even the master of horror himself, Stephen King, could have written a more terrifying seven words!
Impressive press conference by the president. Measured and smart. If the PP loses the judicial review (my guess is she will), her position will become untenable and a key leg of the Zupta/criminal fightback will collapse
There is now no longer any cap on the size of private power generation projects. Electricity generation in South Africa has been deregulated and liberalised (Ts&Cs apply). This is a major step forward (it should have happened 15 years ago). Progress, finally!
Ramaphosa's embrace of a murderous dictator in Putin and his willingness to withdraw from the ICC tell you everything you need to know about the man and his party
Because of the lockdown and the looming economic crisis, the ANC now has a perfect storm on its hands. I do wonder if it knows the only way out of this is the privatisation/closure of SOEs, punishing austerity, IMF funding and the abandonment of the National Democratic Revolution
I drove Durban's southern and western arterial routes on Saturday en route from a south coast holiday and onto the N3 back to Gauteng. I was shocked... (1/6)
Ramaphosa really shouldn't be grinning (as he is) as the CJ hands over his final weighty tome on state capture. He should be hanging his head in shame: it's his party, the ANC, that plundered the country and left us on the brink of becoming a failed state
@politicsblahbla
@DlaminiZuma
Sorry, Carol, I disagree. There is nothing worth respecting in the way she has abused our civil liberties to pursue her own personal agenda in this crisis. She deserves nothing but the utmost contempt!
I see
@the_dti
is mounting a major damage control campaign on Twitter in defence of minister Ebrahim Patel and his Kafkaesque regulations. Not gonna work, chaps.
The ANC has failed to deliver digital migration after 15 years or more of trying. Serious questions now need to be asked. Why has it repeatedly failed? Will it ever be able to deliver on this project? And what if it is incapable of doing so?
Whatever you might think of the DA's "flag burning" election ad, the SABC's decision to ban it from its television channels is outrageous and a MASSIVE own goal by the public broadcaster!
Robbed at gunpoint this evening by two thugs on Republic Road coming out of Sandton (near Bordeaux). Wedding ring and smartphone stolen. Scum. Be careful out there...
Very pleased to announce that
@GwenNgwenya
will be writing a regular column for
@TechCentral
, focusing on emerging technologies and public policy issues. Her first piece will be out later this week...
The SABC really shot itself in the foot by banning this ad. It now has egg all over its face, and even fewer people will be inclined to pay their television licence fee. Staggering idiocy!
I’m honestly not surprised there is a cholera outbreak in Gauteng. I run trails all over the province on weekends, and almost all of our rivers stink of sewerage.
Astonishing interim results from Shoprite Group. Sales up 10%, headline earnings per share up 25% and dividend hiked 22% - in this economy, that's quite the achievement!
Driving on the N1 North through rush hour to Midrand earlier this evening, some politician with at least four police motorcycles and seven or so luxury German vehicles forced motorists aggressively out of the way. Nothing makes my blood boil more. This is not acceptable behaviour
The more the tariffs go up, the more those who can afford it will invest in alternatives like solar, which means less revenue for Eskom. Those who can't afford solar will simply use less prepaid electricity, again meaning less revenue for Eskom. This is not sustainable...
⚡️JUST IN :

18.65% electricity price increases for 2023/2024. Armageddon for consumers, economy & businesses that will have to weather double-whammy of 8-10 hours of blackouts per day + 2.5x CPI price hikes.
Watch: EFF is going to vote for the DA candidate for mayor of Joburg, Phalatse. She will be the new mayor. That's why Mashaba has retracted his candidacy. Many will see this as a victory for the DA, but I don't think it is. What it is is Malema sowing chaos and disorder
I fear it's only a matter of time now until the IMF takes over management of our economy and imposes much-needed austerity. The only question is when, and how much damage will take place before our date with destiny...
Excellent but sobering piece on municipal collapse in Souh Africa under the ANC, including in Johannesburg. Honestly, anyone who votes for the ANC in the October election needs their head read
Not so long ago, I was a free man, no political constraints. Then I agreed, voluntarily to join Government. Tjoooo! Free but not free!! You have to obey the majority/collective decisions! Sometimes it feels like swallowing a rock!😳
It's been an absolute privilege to be involved with my brilliant colleagues in the the

over the past few months, and helping play my small part in changing the narrative in SA politics. I think this little upstart is going surprise on the upside. Vote Purple!
@purplecowmobi
@JGZ_Foundation
This is incitement to violence.
@jack
, South Africa is burning and
@TwitterSupport

I grew up in Durban (and my heart, in some ways, is still there). But the place is looking derelict. It's rotting under the neglect of a failed ANC administration... (2/6)
I hope Trump loses tomorrow, not because I am ideologically aligned with the Democrats (I absolutely am not), but because Trump is a divisive leader and a despicable human being. The GOP needs to lose this one so it can self-correct and find a decent candidate to contest 2024.
With tax receipts set to plummet because of this lockdown, I wonder if government realises that it's going to have to take a machete to the public service (or go to the IMF, which will insist on the same thing)
