I am so proud that this is my father. I don’t know how I have a dad this nice. He has retired from being a school principal but not from teaching evidently. He’s been helping clean up after all the looting. Just received these pictures of him at his local Spar today. 🤗

Nobody must lecture honest, hardworking, taxpayers on solidarity. Amidst looting with impunity taxpayers paid their taxes. Taxes which provide neither quality transport, education, healthcare or security. Nobody understands solidarity more than the overbled taxpaying S. African.

More than any court ruling on independent candidates, do you know what would really radically change the political landscape in SA? Arresting every politician who has been involved in, facilitated or turned a blind eyed to corruption. Who would we be left with? A good start.

You'd swear CR just returned from exile & hasn't been Dep Pres all along. Must congratulate ANC in achieving rare feat of running the country into the ground but still have media, business applaud its 'new' leadership-all of whom were present in the period of destruction. #ANC54

This country is so race mad. The EFF and the ANC have both pleaded in parliament today that VBS failures should not be a reflection on black management. Is Steinhoff a reflection of white people? No. Only the race-obsessed would even think to make a comment like that.

What is the endgame? Keep voting ANC, pretend problems have nothing to do with who is governing the country? I’m honestly at the point where I just want anyone governing but the ANC. Can we engage a different foe? Step 1 introduce consequences into our politics. Move from there.

I need a website built. Developers told me I’m looking at least at R50 000 for a MVP. Decided to learn and do it myself. Found a couple of themes and plugins and easy custom code and boom. Done for about R2 000. Really amazing how much a bit of google and playing around can save.

Wouldn't it be easier if SONA was a simple spreadsheet not just a speech? Maybe 4 Columns/Rows for 1.Year, 2. Deliverable promised, 3. Status of deliverable, 4. Additional comment. Then the purpose of the speech is to walk us through the spreadsheet.

I don’t find it surprising, that it is an older generation of leaders across the political spectrum, who have sober words on the passing of FW de Klerk. In my experience many of my generation are more nostalgic & angrier about events they didn’t live through than those who did.

Coalitions are spent bickering about positions not policy choices. When last/ever did parties come together to discuss how to end the energy crisis, how to stop construction mafias etc. In other words a coalition of substance not organograms. Policy pfft, I know how quaint of me.

This is shocking! As Ferial says the SAHRC thinks your relative degree of past oppression determines your rights. Nobody, not even political parties, think this. How dare the #SAHRC behave so inconsistently with the SA ethos which never uses race for preferential treatment.

Interesting. The Human Rights Commission has set up a new hate speech, right to dignity ratio. Says your relative degree of past oppression determines your present right to dignity - so if Indians were less oppressed, they have lower rights to dignity today. O fok! Shanelle.

Baleka Mbete: “We passed over 100 laws in the last 5 years” Parliament: clap clap clap Me: 😱😱😱😱 How many were any good? Sounds like SA might need to start thinking about a 1-in-two-out rule that will focus minds on the potential cost of regulation.

Talking to friends in Paris & Copenhagen, and they say why are you still there? Come here. They seem so genuinely baffled by my decision to stay in what they only see as another 3rd world country. Funny I moan about SA too, but as soon as they do it I feel so terribly defensive.

If high ranking politicians know something about the state of our economy that we as citizens don’t, and they move their assets abroad on that basis. Is that insider trading? It certainly should be seen that way.

DA: We want equality of opportunity. Reply: But we’re not an equal society. If I may: Equality of opportunity is a normative statement i.e. what society ought to be. It’s not descriptive i.e. what society is. Correct we’re not there. That’s why we propose policy to get there.

It’s amazing how institutions become right wing or racist at a convenient moment. Maimane approached me to head up policy for the DA, while I was at the IRR. Just this year he was seeking to meet the IRR on policy. It’s undignified to go out this way.

Charging of interest should go both ways. If a municipality can charge interest on bills unpaid then residents should be able to claim interest on credit balances/overpayments which were not voluntary. Most municipalities do not do this.

Every day I have to wrestle with the thought of moving back abroad. My best friends are abroad, I’ve never really managed to settle into a social circle ever since coming back. And with the state of the country it is, it becomes increasingly tempting.

Last week Yunus Carrim accuses me of talking down to everybody and this week says that I try to turn parliament into an academic seminar. Only in politics will you experience such derision for being knowledgeable.

Not everyone leaves politics because they’re disillusioned. Just life has different seasons and stages on which to play our parts. I can’t help but feel in this manifesto season grateful to those still in the trenches, many good people, working to ensure SA has better days ahead.

☑️ The DA has earmarked seven Key Priorities that will guide everything the Party does in government. It will not be easy but these are the concrete plans worth pursuing if we are to rescue South Africa from years of decay. Read more at #DAmanifesto

Profs. Karim & van den Heever etc disagree. WC doing precisely what more provinces should be. Infections won’t be detected if low proportions of people tested. Fatality rate in WC remains in line with successful countries. If we needed fighters, it’s now. Not hysterical ninnies.

Is it just me or Johannesburg homes are poorly built for winter. They are like ice boxes. 🥶Would’ve been great if they were built with central heating. Maybe new builds are. Older homes built as if JHB has Durban weather.

I’d be worried if I received cheers. No other speaker (ANC, UDM, IFP) received applause. But the BBC loved calls of EWC and state custodianship of land. In the words of the immortal Rick Sanchez (Rick & Morty): “Your boos mean nothing, because I’ve seen what makes you cheer.”

Because no shame in SA politics the President &/or Minister will not resign. But if ever a motion of no confidence should be moved in the National Assembly it is over this. Not only was there a fatal delay in procuring, they have lied about it.

The enemy is looting, cadre deployment, statist policies and outright incompetence. White privilege is a smokescreen. After 20 years in the hospital I don’t want my doctor still explaining why my leg is broken. Why is the little progress unraveling? And do I need a 2nd opinion?

The sweet irony! I’m sitting in the finance committee in parliament waiting for us to begin line by line analysis of the Carbon Tax Bill. We haven’t started. Why not? The lights are out. Thank you Eskom. Fitting that we think about our energy and carbon challenges in the dark.

Commentators: Liberalism is a white European ideology, it will never appeal to black people in South Africa. Some people are in for a shock when they google Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Trotsky etc.

Tourism—>Health minister. Why is everyone surprised? It’s the culture in politics, not just ANC. It’s assumed anyone can serve anywhere. Ex geography teacher can be minister of trade and industry, former nurse can be finance minister etc. There’s seldom rhyme or reason.

The response that more white people are shot by cops than black people in the US, is like the response to farm murders in SA. More straight people are assaulted than LGBT doesn’t negate the latter experience of assault based on sexual orientation. Why are we competing over pain?

Is the man who grew cosy with VBS looters seriously saying this without irony? 3 of 104 people is disappointing but hardly signals a sea change. The challenge for SA is that 2 of the 3 largest parties are riddled with corruption. Meaning EFF or ANC, it’s a deal with the devil.

The fact that some DA Councillors elected to vote for Makhubo over their own candidate, demonstrates why I had to leave the DA. The DA of today is clearly not the DA that I joined - not when they support an allegedly corrupt person.

Let’s not hear a peep on ‘solidarity tax’ from the usual suspects. If you’re paying for living off the grid, paying for private healthcare, private security etc because your taxes do not provide them then you are already paying solidarity taxes because you get nothing in return.
