Grad school is supposed to be hard because research is hard. Challenging your thinking and learning a bunch of new information at the same time is hard. All of that helps you become a scientist who wants to discover ethically and methodically. HOWEVER...

Grad school should not be hard because advisors and other faculty get in the way of your success. It shouldn't be hard because you can't afford rent on your low stipend. There should be more mental health and financial assistance for graduate students.

Hi all! I am a 3rd year PhD candidate in biomedical engineering. I have generalized and social anxiety, and depression. I am also working through trauma. Even though my disabilities are invisible, there is a lot I have to do behind the scenes to function every day.

Additionally, funding shouldn't be so hard to find. There is so much money flowing in the hands of a select few while we are trying to scrap by. Don't even get me started on how disadvantaged international students are in the US when comes to funding (AKA citizen requirements).

It's just hard to feel like you are doing a good job when there is always so much to do and always this feeling that you aren't doing enough, fast enough.
So, yes, grad school is hard. It's best to be honest about it with future applicants so they know what to expect.

These are some of the harsh realities of grad school. We don't get the support we want and need. Even when you have good funding and support, the pressure of academia can be so suffocating.

I only knew about the harsh environments within academia before my PhD because I was born into it, which is a huge privilege. But most people don't know what it is like, and it is better to be informed than completely thrown into the ocean without even a floatie.

So, this just happened!!! I’m so proud of myself! I passed my qualifying exam, and now I am officially a candidate! This experience was really tough, trying to balance everything, but I am so glad it is done!

I haven’t been this depressed since the spring semester of my 1st year of my PhD when I thought I wasn’t good enough and wanted to leave.
Now I just want to leave to because academia is a huge disappointment and there is little to no support for grad students. This is so tiring

I had three research opportunities before applying to grad school and none of them resulted in papers. Grad schools and fellowships should not be putting these unrealistic expectations on undergrads.
the next advice is "publish a paper" just say you don't want URMs in EEB, please. say it with your full chest
I've done TWO REUs, and don't have a paper from either of them bc shocker most faculty don't believe in putting UGs on papers.

Maybe some of y’all have noticed that I changed my pronouns to she/they. It took a lot of thinking, but I think it fits me best! It’s wild to think that just a few years ago I questioned my gender, but never thought about being non-binary. It feels good to figure myself out!

This is my little PCR station! This week I have done bone tissue homogenization, RNA precipitation, RNA extraction via columns, and RNA quantification. I hope to do some DNAse treatment today and end the week with some cDNA. I’m very proud of myself for getting this far!

Got my 2nd Pfizer dose today!
For my 1st dose, my arm started to hurt a few hours afterwards and increasingly hurt until the morning after.
For the 2nd shot, my arm started to hurt about 30 minutes afterwards. After 3 hours, I’m starting to feel a bit tired.
