It's striking how much healthier Kim Jong Un is looking in these photos from yesterday. However he is doing it -- and there are theories -- he looks a lot better than he did a few months ago.
No-one knows what's going on inside North Korea. Kim Jong Il had been dead several days before it was announced and it took everyone by surprise. Kim Jong Un has been "missing" before, and has always reappeared. That said, his absence this week was more notable.
In late 2023, Nick Roy () discovered a misconfigured North Korean Internet server. For a month, we watched daily file uploads that appear to show North Korean animators working on major animations for Western companies. (1)
Kim Jong Un getting his hands dirty, literally. State TV broadcast footage today of him planting a tree at a new housing development in Pyongyang. His sister was alongside helping him dig a hole, plant the tree.
The FBI has disclosed that agents from other investigations accessed Twitter, Facebook data in Virgil Griffith/North Korea crypto case because *default setting* in Palantir is to allow all FBI agents access to everything from all cases. That's quite amazing.
North Korean TV has ended broadcasts for the day with nothing out of the ordinary. Top news was Kim Jong Un sending thanks to workers. It wasn't accompanied by images, but those stories often don't anyway. Scheduled to sign-on next at 3pm tomorrow.
"It's too early to tell, but I wouldn't say I'm pessimistic. For what I feel right now, I do have a feeling that good results will come out." - Kim Jong Un when asked just now by a journalist if he is confident going into the summit with Trump.
Front page of Saturday's Rodong Sinmun newspaper in North Korea. Amazing. The North Korean people are shown the leaders at the border, Kim Jong Un stepping into South Korea.
Just In: North Korea's state news agency runs photos of Kim Jong Un at a Workers' Party of Korea Executive Policy Council meeting that took place on Tuesday. For a chap in a coma, he's looking better than I expected.
Anyone else spot this? There were two "Donald Trump" signing pens, NK official came in and shined up the one for Kim, then at the last minute Kim Yo Jong pulled out her own per to use instead of the one provided. Kim used that and back it went in her blazer. (Pool video)
JUST IN: North Korean TV shows video of the Tuesday morning launch of the Hwasong-16B. It says the missile is a "new-type intermediate-range hypersonic missile."
Here's a bit of Ri Chun Hee announcing North Korea's plans to halt ICBM and nuclear testing, dismantle its nuclear test site. Broadcast moments ago on North Korean television.
What a difference a decade makes. October 2010 vs January 2021.
@alistaircoleman
and I were talking Kim Jong Un weight gain but this progression deserves its own tweet. This is why many think the biggest threat to Kim is his own health.
The visit of the South Korean delegation is getting the full treatment on North Korean TV tonight, with a special report, not just an item on the news. Here's a taster.
Intriguing images from Beijing, captured by Japan's Nippon TV. A 21-car train, similar to one used by Kim Jong Il in 2011, pulled into Beijing Station around 3pm. Met by honor guard and line of VIP cars. Speculation is that Kim Jong Un could be in Beijing.
While much has been said on Trump's salute to No remember this: North Korean TV broadcast video nationwide of the leader of its armed forces saluting the US president. That's equally surprising.

North Korean TV just aired a report on Kim's Sunday departure, arrival and meet with Singapore PM. 5 repeats scheduled today. If you're curious what "Donald J Trump" sounds like in Korean, see if you can hear Ri Chun Hee say his name. Full video:
North Korea says it wants to join global talks to end nuclear testing. Among the handful of nations yet to sign the CTBT nuclear test ban treaty are North Korea and the US. So if US continues to hold out, Kim could cite it as bad faith. Smart move.
Japan's government says the North Korean missile launched earlier today flew approximately 4,600kms and to an altitude of approximately 1,000kms - NHK TV

I've just gone through Friday's North Korean TV broadcast. The ONLY mention of the summit was a 3-minute bulletin at 3pm saying Kim Jong Un was on his way to Panmunjon. No video, no still images, no repeat. News bulletins contained usual propaganda.
Typhoon no.10 (
#haishen
) is expected to hit North Korea this afternoon. The third in three weeks. State TV is on the air early (from 7am) with typhoon reports. Here's one that just aired. The typhoon is off South Korea so North Korea is yet to see heavy rain and strong winds.
Kim Jong Un is delivering this year's new year address from an armchair. A bid to make him more relatable? The recorded speech outlines his priorities for the year and began on Korean Central TV at 9am.
The North Korea missile was launched around 1014 and appears to have come down around 1120 to the west of Hokkaido in Japan's EEZ, according to NHK TV quoting the Japanese government. If confirmed, it would be the 34th launch this year.
Powerful quake at 2308 Saturday evening in Japan. Intensity of 6+ (on scale to 7) in Fukushima and Miyagi. M7.1 in same area as major quake 10 years ago, but while powerful was smaller this time. No tsunami risk this time.
Look at the message North Korean TV is sending citizens about Kim Jong Un's reception in Singapore - crowds lining the street, waving, smiling, taking pictures. Not much different from the final clips of his arrival in Pyongyang.
The Japanese Prime Minister's office has deleted a tweet sent a few minutes ago on its English account that said a North Korean missile flew over Japan. It appears it was sent in error and related to an earlier launch.
For folks rightly wondering if we can trust the NK state media photos: they rare fake this. It's too easy to spot. And the factory has been under construction for 2 years. We've seen it grow in satellite images: Google and

CBS News reporting the soldier was supposed to be heading back to the US. This makes this story even more bizarre. Still no official word from the Pentagon.
Kim Jong Un's reappearance led the 6am news on Korean Central Radio. Here's the best recording I got (with black video because Twitter won't let me upload audio only)
This is a great overview of the different ways North Korea watchers try to gain insight into what's happening on the ground through open-source information. Well worth the 8 minutes.

It's been 10 years and 2 days since Kim Jong Il died, but only 10 years since we found out about it. North Korea kept the lid on the news until today (Dec 19). Here's how the news played out in state media (and beyond) from my archives. (A thread)
BBC World News was taken off air in Russia on Sunday. It follows the suspension of other media that isn't aligned with the Kremlin. Meanwhile, here in DC, Russia state outlet Sputnik continues on 105.5 and 1390. The service is the successor to Radio Moscow. (1/2)
After Kim Jong Un's Beijing visit, this evening North Korean TV ran a history of China-DPRK official visits, starting in 1953. Another signal that China is in favor at present. Some good footage of Kim Il Sung and Deng Xiaoping laughing it up over cigarettes:
🆕 JUST IN: North Korea's KCNA: "The ICBM Hwasong-15 type weaponry system is an intercontinental ballistic rocket tipped with super-large heavy warhead which is capable of striking the whole mainland of the U.S."
There is no evidence to suggest that the companies identified had any knowledge that a part of their project had been subcontracted to North Korean animators. But it shows how North Korean IT workers can end up taking a part in projects without the knowledge of contractors. (4)
Kim Jong Un spoke for 7 hours at the meeting, according to state media. Seven hours! On "state building, economic development and building of the armed forces." That meant lots and lots and lots of note taking by the participants. I have no idea on the toilet/tea break policy.
The North Koreans are really taking their showmanship up a level with these parades. Check out the start of the latest one. It had me transfixed with anticipation for what was about to happen.
Ri Chun Hee, North Korea's famous news reader and most recognizable propagandist, has a swanky new apartment in the heart of Pyongyang. One of many elites rewarded for their unquestioning loyalty to the Kim family with a place in the "village of true patriots."
I had to check my recording to believe this. In the Asian Games Women's match between North and South Korea, North Korean TV graphics labeled South Korea as "괴뢰," or "puppets." They beat them 4-1 and went on to thrash Uzbekistan 8-0. Final is Friday where they face Japan.
It's the 1960s all over again. Journalists cover a presidential motorcade from the back of convertible Lincolns, this time on Tuesday in Pyongyang. It looks like North Koreans in front car, South Koreans in rear car.
The files included what appear to be working files for Invincible, an Amazon Original produced by Skybound Entertainment. (They already put out a statement here: ) (2)
To our fans: Skybound has been made aware of an unconfirmed report concerning a cloud storage server connected to a North Korean IP address. This server supposedly contains an Invincible animation sketch. Our official statement follows.

on Sunday during a parade to mark the 70th anniversary of North Korea's founding. You can see a large "70" made my participants and, to the right, the star from the DPRK's flag.
JUST IN 📡: North Korean TV broadcasts video of Kim Jong Un addressing the Central Military Commission. It's the same room in Workers' Party of Korea HQ used for 2019 New Year Address. Audience of ~80, clock moves from 0935-1220 suggesting ~3-hour session.
The Putin motorcade certainly looked impressive, making it's way through Pyongyang at about 4am in the morning. Not sure what to make of all the lights on in the apartments at that time in the morning. Residents likely instructed to have them on.
Really tough to make everything out with the room acoustics and cameras clicking, but Trump/Kim at the start of the second meeting per the pool camera feed. Kim said "I believe this is a big prelude to peace."
Michelle is right. It's virtually impossible to own a gun in Japan. (It appears the weapon used to shoot Abe was home-made) The police are armed but they so rarely fire their weapons that when they do it's national news. More reading here:
Can't overstate how shocking this shooting is -- not only because Abe is very popular and prominent, but also because gun violence is extremely rare incident in Japan, a country with some of the world's strictest gun laws.
For the first time in a year, Ri Sol Ju, the wife of Kim Jong Un, has been seen at an event. She attended a concert at the Mansudae Art Theatre in Pyongyang on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the birth of Kim Jong Il, according to state media. Here's an image it carried.
Japan's government has issued J-Alert to warn people in Okinawa to take shelter for a North Korean missile launch. No word yet on if this is an ICBM test or the satellite launch. The satellite launch window opened this morning, but awaiting more information.
KCTV used at least two quadcopter camera drones and one on an RC car to get images from the parade. The production quality has improved in the last couple of years.
There are several news stories out about a scene in North Korean TV's documentary on Kim Jong Un's 2021. Almost universally they say he is "struggling" to negotiate the stairs. See for yourself. He's careful for sure, but is "struggling" really correct?
Media literacy is so bad, even journalists can't get it right. This Vice News story says AP reported cheerleaders were sent to prison camps. AP actually reported the Chosun Ilbo newspaper made the claim based on a single, anonymous source. Hardly the same.
