Today, on behalf of
@ICJPalestine
's Legal Working Group for Canadian Accountability, we served notice on the Government of Canada of our intention to seek the prosecution of Canadian officials who have aided, abetted, or otherwise assisted Israel's war crimes in Gaza. 🧵
An example of anti-Palestinian racism & double standards:
1. A person brandishes a nail gun at Palestine solidarity protesters.
2. The person assaults them and threatens "Every f--king Palestinian will die."
3. The person is arrested.
4. Silence from all levels of government.
A man was arrested after using a nail gun to attack Palestine solidarity protesters in Canada.
They were demonstrating against an Israeli real estate company event at a Toronto synagogue which only seemed open to Jews ⤵️
Let there be no mistake: this vote in favour of a ceasefire was not a benevolent awakening by Canada. It was the forced result of relentless mass organizing and pressure on the state every day for the last two months.
@melaniejoly
Why are you horrified by the predictable outcome of your (in)action?
Canada's multifaceted complicity with Israeli military aggression makes strikes like this possible.
This level of human suffering does not occur in a vacuum.
Demands without consequences are meaningless.
Do you think it's challenging being under quarantine? This video depicts the living conditions for some of the Jamaican and Latin American migrant farmworkers in Ontario. They are the ones who keep the multi-billion dollar agri-food industry alive. They deserve better.

Nicaragua has notified Canada that it intends to commence legal proceedings to hold Canada accountable if it does not end its complicity in the genocide in Gaza.
While the story has been ignored by Canadian press, numerous foreign outlets have reported on it (links below).
Canada's hypocrisy is overwhelming.
Israel has launched massive missile and drone strikes against Gaza over the last 82 days, killing at least 21,507 people, including more than 8,800 children.
Not once has Canada condemned these attacks or any of Israel's other war crimes.
Last night, Russia launched massive missile and drone strikes against multiple Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv.
Canada strongly condemns these attacks against Ukraine and Putin’s illegal invasion. We continue to

The Heseg Foundation was co-founded by Indigo CEO Heather Reisman and effectively subsidizes Israel's Ministry of Defense.
Let's examine where tax-deductible donations to Heseg end up, and why this appears to be at odds with rules set by the Canada Revenue Agency. 🧵
This is what happens when you have a police force with minimal accountability, an operating budget that exceeds $1 billion, and an agenda characterized by anti-Palestinian racism.
When MPP
@SarahJama_
called for a ceasefire in Gaza, the Ontario government misrepresented her comments and censured her in the Legislature.
She brought an application for judicial review, but Ontario filed a motion to strike the application citing "parliamentary privilege". 1/2
How exactly does Canada "honour" the Palestinian civilians killed by Israeli occupation forces?
Is it by continuing to export arms to Israel?
Is it by refusing to call for a ceasefire?
Or is it by trying to shut down the ICC's investigation of Israel's war crimes?
Tonight,
@melaniejoly
and I honoured the civilian victims of armed conflict, underscoring the critical importance of complying with international humanitarian law.
Two hospitals impacted by bombings – one in Gaza, the other in Ukraine. Two distinct reactions by Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Canada refuses to acknowledge any of Israel's military actions in Gaza as constituting war crimes, including numerous attacks on hospitals.
The Coalition for Canadian Accountability in Gaza has notified the federal government of its intention to commence legal proceedings seeking declarations that Canada violated the Charter rights of Palestinian-Canadians in Gaza and ignored duties under the Genocide Convention. 🧵
CHARGE WITHDRAWN
On January 7, 2024, my client, Maged Sameh Hilal Al Khalaf, was criminally charged with publicly inciting hatred for allegedly flying the flag of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine ("PFLP").
Today that charge was withdrawn by the Crown Attorney.
"No double standards"?
If Canada believes in the rule of law, why did it attempt to shut down the ICC Prosecutor's investigation of Israel's war crimes?
If Canada believes attacks on civilians are wrong, why does it export arms to Israel knowing they are used against civilians?
There are no double standards: only one - the rule of law. Attacks on civilian populations are wrong, wherever they occur. Terrorism is wrong, wherever it occurs. Aggression is wrong, wherever it occurs. There is a universality we must continue to embrace: life, law, and
MPP Sarah Jama was censured for calling for a ceasefire.
The Premier denounced Palestine solidarity demonstrations as "hate rallies."
And now the Speaker has banned keffiyehs.
Anti-Palestinian racism is entrenched in Ontario's Legislative Assembly.
There are many places where we might like to be on this rainy day, but there is one place where we must be.

Israel's detonation of pagers across Lebanon was a clear violation of international humanitarian law. Children and other civilians were among those killed and injured.

Expressions of "concern" are meaningless without action.
⚠️ Canada could halt arms exports to Israel.
⚠️ Canada could cease military cooperation with Israel.
⚠️ Canada could reinstate funding for UNRWA.
Canada's refusal to take any action makes it complicit in this genocide.
The civilians in Rafah are people— they are mothers, children. They have names, stories— and they exist. Asking them to move again is unacceptable.
They have nowhere to go.
We need a hostage deal, for more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza and we need a sustainable ceasefire.
If Canada is truly concerned about extremist settler violence, then why does it enable the expansion and profitability of illegal settlements through the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement?
Thousands of olive trees were not harvested due to increased extremist settler violence and access restrictions. 🇨🇦 is concerned about the livelihoods of 🇵🇸 farmers who depend on this harvest for income. Our programming continues to support a resilient 🇵🇸 agricultural sector.
Although the ICJ has ruled that Israel must take measures to prevent genocide in Gaza, Canada continues to:
➡️permit arms exports to Israel;
➡️allow illegal recruitment of Canadian volunteers for Israel's armed forces; and
➡️engage in high-level military cooperation with Israel.
Today's advisory opinion from the ICJ is clear: words are not enough. States must take action to end Israeli occupation and apartheid.
Here is some of what can be distilled from the decision, particularly as it potentially relates to Canadian complicity:

Canada has never imposed sanctions against those implicated in Israeli disinformation and propaganda. Nor has it imposed sanctions against those involved in Israel's military-industrial complex.
Why does Canada devalue Palestinian lives and refuse to hold Israel accountable?
At the beginning of Ramadan, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs met with her Israeli counterpart. She has never publicly condemned his genocidal statements, including that "They [Gazans] will not receive a drop of water or a single battery until they leave the world."
The U.S. supplies Israel with over 70% of its military imports. It uses Canada as a source for arms components and munitions, with the full knowledge and approval of the Canadian government.
Canada remains complicit in Israel's war crimes and crimes against humanity.
As of this evening, the Canadian Armed Forces continue to play a supporting role in U.S. airstrikes on Yemen.
Canada does not hesitate to prevent harm to "international commerce," but it refuses to take any action to prevent Israel from committing genocide in Gaza.

Three months after Canada promised it would impose sanctions on extremist Israeli settlers, still nothing. Only disingenuous expressions of concern about those who facilitate genocide.
Welcome to Canada, where former directors of spy agencies are permitted to run a venture capital fund to develop surveillance tech for Israel's military (which is under investigation by the ICC for war crimes), and those who challenge them are arrested by the police.

Canada claims it stands with Ukrainian mothers.
In stark contrast, Canada stands complicit in the deaths of Palestinian mothers - an estimated 37 of whom are killed every day as a result of Israel's genocidal campaign against Gaza.

Canada says, "Today we are reminded of our duty to strive for a world where children are free to be children."
The reality is that Canada has permitted arms exports to Israel and engaged in military cooperation while Israel's armed forces have killed 11,500+ children in Gaza.
Following yesterday's events, some are calling for Canada to list Iran's IRGC as a terrorist entity.
An honest question: how should Canada treat an apartheid state that uses starvation as a weapon, has killed 14,000+ children in 190 days, and is actively carrying out a genocide?
Naftali Bennett led unprecedented growth of illegal Israeli settlements (which are war crimes under international law).
It is also alleged he was involved in events leading to the Qana massacre of 103 Lebanese civilians by Israeli troops.

On Oct. 12, President Herzog stated "It is an entire nation out there that is responsible. It is not true this rhetoric about civilians not being aware, not involved."

Throughout this, Canada devalues the lives of Palestinian children by taking no action as it selectively declares

What was not discussed during the call?

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog. The Prime Minister and President discussed the situation in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Read a summary of the call:
Nearly nine years after the OPP subjected dozens of migrant farmworkers to a DNA sweep, we have a ruling from the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario: the police discriminated against them on the basis of their race, skin colour, and place of origin. 1/6
It requires exceptional audacity to offer such a demonstrable falsehood to those grieving loved ones killed by Israel's armed forces.
Canada's egregious and unlawful complicity in no way supports the victims of genocide in Gaza. It supports the perpetrators.
Just so that we're clear: a genocide with a "humanitarian pause" is still a genocide.
With or without such a pause, perpetrators are still liable. As are those who aid and abet them with financing, arms exports, and other military support.
I discussed the need for humanitarian pauses, so aid can be delivered to Palestinian civilians. We also condemned rising antisemitism and Islamophobia around the world. As the situation continues to evolve, I’ll keep working with the Emir and others.
Canada's actions condone that which its words supposedly condemn:
🇨🇦 Exporting arms components to Israel.
🇨🇦 Purchasing missiles from Israel.
🇨🇦 Maintaining military cooperation with Israel.
Each of these acts of complicity undermines Canada's international commitments.
1/2 Canada condemns the Israeli strike that killed Palestinian civilians sheltering at a school in Gaza, including children.
Israel must uphold international humanitarian law. Hamas must stop putting civilian lives in danger.

While libraries are torched in Gaza (a war crime under the Rome Statute), Canadian "charities" send millions of dollars to Israel annually to pay for the university education of IOF soldiers (a violation of Canada Revenue Agency policy).
An Israeli occupation soldier posted an image of himself posing in front of the Al Aqsa University library, which they had set on fire.
Israel has targeted all universities in the Strip, with some being completely destroyed, aiming to force Palestinian youths to flee, thereby
Canada continues to feign outrage about Israel's war crimes in Gaza, while taking no meaningful action to stop them.
How many deaths will it take for Canada to uphold its obligations under the UN Arms Trade Treaty, end military cooperation, and impose a two-way arms embargo?
Anti-Palestinian racism and potential Charter violations often underlie the policing of Gaza solidarity demonstrations in Toronto. This includes:
🚨 False arrests
🚨 Arbitrary "no protest" zones
🚨 Unjustified use of nighttime warrants
🚨 Politicized use of the Hate Crimes Unit
Toronto police have made 24 arrests and laid 30 charges at demonstrations since October 7, 2023.
As we head into the weekend, TPS is reminding the public that critical infrastructure, including hospitals and places of worship must remain accessible and are not places to protest.
Canada's refusal to denounce international crimes committed by Israel's armed forces long predates its complacency with the genocidal bombardment of Gaza.
This article is my argument on why we cannot rely on Canada to intervene at this critical time.
Disingenuous expressions of concern for "peace and stability" in the Middle East, as if Canada has not been complicit the deaths of 33,000+ Palestinians in Gaza over the last 6 months.
Making an allegation is one thing. Proving that allegation is something else entirely.
In due time, the public will see that many (if not most) of the charges laid against Palestine solidarity activists had no reasonable prospect of conviction or were not in the public interest.
Expressions of deep concern do not thwart rapists or protect those they seek to victimize.
Canada continues to enable Israel's illegal occupation and the violations of Palestinian dignity that flow from it.
1/2 Canada is deeply concerned by reports on the torture and abuse of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, including sexual violence. Such treatment is never justifiable, in any context.

Canada must stop ignoring the evidence and equally apply the law and CRA policy to Heseg. An investigation and appropriate enforcement action are required to uphold the rule of law and halt the "Canadian charity to Israeli military" pipeline that has operated for far too long. /9
History shows us that whenever a mass movement threatens ruling class interests, the state will attempt to vilify it.
If vilification is unsuccessful, the state will attempt to manipulate it.
And if manipulation is unsuccessful, the state will violently attack it.
"Upon hearing that a criminal bombed a water truck destined for people suffering from dehydration, my office most respectfully reached out to the criminal to better understand their reasons."
The rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian relief for Palestinian people is critical. Upon hearing that IDRF Canada’s water truck had been bombed my office reached out to them and we have contacted the Israeli government for more information on the incident.
In response to the attempted coup today by factions of the armed forces in Bolivia, the people fought back by:
🇧🇴 Calling for a general strike
🇧🇴 Immediately flooding the streets

They were united in their defence of democracy, and they won.
Bolivia's social movements put differences aside and mobilized to Plaza Murillo in La Paz to defend their elected government from a coup attempt. The government says it has neutralized the threat.

"Children should not be pawns in war," however you have refused to take action to prevent the genocide of Palestinian children.
More children have been killed in Gaza in six months than were killed in war globally between 2019-2022. Yet not so much as a sanction from Canada.
The positions taken by the Government of Canada must not be confused for ignorance or cowardice. This is not a failure to act, but rather a well-calculated refusal.
And while this refusal to act is shameful for Canadians, it has deadly consequences for Palestinians.
Canada has assisted Israel by consistently ignoring its legal obligations.
It allows arms exports to Israel, allows for volunteers to be recruited for the Israeli military, and allows charitable donations to be improperly funneled to the Israeli military.
The legal battles to hold Canadian officials accountable will inevitably be protracted and fought on many fronts. This is one of those battles. Much respect to
