@mseymour84 Back in the day centre backs only had to defend deep against strikers. Never had to worry about goalscoring wide forwards. Also look at the forwards VVD has faced in Kane, Isak, Haaland, Augero, Lewandowski, Suarez, Messi, Ronaldo, Benzema, Zlatan, Cavanni and Mbappe

@spuddy1878 The modern game also asks wide forward players to score goals hence Salah and Sakas etc. ridiculous numbers with full backs bombing on so modern centre backs have to defend a total different way. The game has totally changed tactically so it’s near impossible to compare.

@spuddy1878 Augero was in his prime when VVD won player of the year, Kane too. Isak & Haaland not to shabby either. Far more games in Europe too & VVD has faired well against Benzema, Suarez, Lewandowski and Messi etc. Also how many defenders from the past defended from the halfway line.

@OliPriceBates Liverpool had these type of injuries last season and finished 3rd. Also, had worse the season when VVD, Gomez, and Matip all went out for the season and Thiago for 5 months just to name a few. Battled back to finish 3rd having lost sixth consecutive times.
