Incredible supercell structure timelapse over Lake McConaughy in western Nebraska during our late May chase trip. Greatest storm structure I have ever seen! Check out the teeth-like VVS in the vault region!

The Jewell, Iowa tornado on 7/14 was literally "going green" at the end of its life as it collected enough corn leaves to color the debris cloud.

Mothership insanity in Mount Ayr, Iowa last night as a supercell finally broke the cap after dark and gave us a great show. Didn't know Iowa was capable of structure like this.

The 2024 severe weather season continues to amaze. This is my favorite picture of the giant hailstorm from June 7 near Ansley, Nebraska shooting as wide as I can at 10mm. One of my best shots ever!

The rare tall/fully condensed tornado from Jewell, Iowa. This was halfway through its life as it began its very lengthy occlusion and rope-out phase.

Faribault, MN last Wednesday. An unlikely striated midwest supercell in early march. Weather is so dang cool. Full chase video will be live tomorrow at 7pm.

Destructive and long-track tornado touched down near Jewell, Iowa this afternoon. It destoyed several barns and uprooted trees right in front of us. This thing shapeshifted for 20 minutes before finally roping out.

Today was just insane in southwest Nebraska. Chased 6 tornadoes in total and amazing structure. Maybe my best photography day ever. 1,2,4 are all timelapse frames.

Cooking up a fun python script this week. Trying to make some buttery smooth long track radar loops. I greatly underestimated how hard it would be to auto switch between radar sites, got it done though. Hoping to add some more features too.
A few quick edits from our storm chase in Minnesota today. We think we got a very brief tornado as well, but until NWS can do surveys we may not know for sure.

The final epic moment of yesterday's chase was this encounter with an elevated supercell! The first shot may be one of my luckiest ever, not only because we woke up early enough to chase it in the first place, but also because I caught a full in frame bolt shooting at 1/25.

This is likely the greatest timelapse I've ever captured. The lightning, the pancake stack storm structure, fully condensed tornado. All in glorious 4K. From Paxton, NE 5/23/24.

One week ago Nebraska showed off its finest supercell structure (and I finally had the chance to edit all my shots). The full timelapse sequence will be up on my youtube channel soonish
Evolution of the Minden/Harlen violent tornado on Friday. Obviously mergers were impactful here, in this case to me the merger looked more detrimental to the storm. Meso seemed inhibited for a while until the southern cell cleared out of the inflow.
Another incredible moment from yesterday chasing a vigorous updraft near Northwood, Iowa. The sun set on the twisting updraft and made for a very photogenic scene.

Massive sunset supercell in Oberlin, Kansas on 5/26/2021. With March being days away, it won't be long until we chase skies like this again.

I’ve left my apartment for storms twice this season and both times has produced images better than anything I’ve taken in previous years, the kind of shots I can stare at every day and they’ll never get old. It’s going to be an incredible season.
So excited to share my new timelapse film with you all! I have been putting many hours and miles into this since March in order to make this my best work yet. Find the biggest screen you have and give it a watch!

Mammatus rows following a tornado producing supercell in Pella, Iowa on 6/20/21. I have never seen mammatus line up like this before, so my jaw was on the floor seeing this.

Wide angle shot of the monster shelf cloud and whale's mouth that just crossed northwest Iowa. This shot was taken from south of Ames. Timelapse to come later.

Late last night produced an incredible lightning display near Fort Dodge, Iowa as a few storms fired up and went through a few bursts of CGs. The first shot is a stack of three images and the others are 6 second exposures. Good to be out shooting lightning again!

I would like this to be hanging on my wall immediately please and thank you. This was the moment when the Stanhope tornado was at its most mature and healthy stage, and briefly looked like a corn moisture version of DDC 2016 tornado.

Life update! Beginning this summer I will be moving to Lincoln to start a Master’s degree in meteorology at the University of Nebraska.
I will be joining
@SsrgUnl
as they lead TORUS this summer. Very excited to be a part of the future of supercell research!
Today I learned: Radar resolution is more a function of how the data is processed rather than radar hardware. So with the original IQ signal you can actually up the resolution as much as you want (at the cost of data quality). This one goes all the way back to KOUN May 9, 2003!
Otherwordly storm structure made an appearance in central Iowa this evening. Huge hail coming out of this storm at the time. Best structure I've ever seen in this state. First is a frame from a timelapse, so look forward to that tomorrow.

That's a wrap on storm season 2021 for me! Here's a few stats from my greatest chase season yet:
- 15 tornadoes
- 32 supercells
- 6300 miles traveled
- 7 states
Plus a few favorite tornado and structure shots. Send me yours too.

The Jewell, IA tornado on July 14 only got more photogenic as it began its lengthy rope-out stage over open corn fields. Quite the site to see this cross the road in front of us for a third time. At this point I thought it was done, and I was wrong again.

Mothership madness in southern Iowa late last night! These hailers put on a great show in the Albia/Blakesburg area (possibly even a tornado shortly after the first shot). I've never seen a nocturnal event quite like this in Iowa!

Myself and my team are safe. Large and long track tornado went through many populated areas and we are looking around to see if anybody is needing to be dug out. Going to be doing search and rescue for a while.
Yall, today was my 21st birthday. So, naturally, like the ultra nerd that I am, have put together 21 of my favorite tornado shots for your viewing pleasure.
The meso on that supercell yesterday was absolutely massive. Had it not been for the inversion or maybe lack of great near surface shear this thing could have planted a mile wide tornado. Instead, it seemed like there were brief vortices dancing underneath.

Excited to say I have accepted a summer internship at NWS Sioux Falls through the Hollings program! I will be working with storm damage assessment using satellite observations.
Power flashes and lightning in the leading edge of the storm! Looking towards Grand Junction, Iowa over an hour ago. Its possible that the first flash was caused by an embedded circulation behind the rain but the others seem to be from straight line wind.

On 7/14
@StrmchsrHunterF
and I had a high-contrast angle of what I would call the "Pilger Effect" when the original tornado that touched down in Stratford was rocketed around the new circulation that was touching down. This would go on to become the Stanhope/Jewell tornado.

With storm season coming to a close, I decided to do a little math. I traveled around 9500 miles this year looking for severe weather and saw 11 tornadoes. Maybe ~half the miles traveling with the TORUS research campaign. How far did you travel this year for storms?
Top tier mammatus display on the backside of tornadic supercell in Missouri this evening. Timelapse tomorrow, I bet it will be one of my favorites!

This was the most unbelievable moment I’ve ever had while storm chasing. I can now say I’ve seen two tornadoes at the exact same spot three years apart. Vermeer is in shots 2/3 and the sports complex is in 1/4. Knew it was a good spot to watch a tor cuz I’d done it once before!
