announcing @stell_space $4M seed raise . I believe in this mission more than ever. Existing requirements and compliance software is causing massive loss of speed and innovation. critical engineering software should be build in the USA 🇺🇸.

Manufacturing is a great career for problem solvers of all types. Yes it involves nerd stuff like robotics and operations, but it also features problems/opportunities in human behavior and motivation, communication structures, complex logic problems, and materials science.

This is not how I expected news to get out, but yes: I am shutting down Countdown. We've delivered strong performance, but I believe the future of this space favors larger firms than mine. I don't know what the future holds for me yet, but I look forward to sharing once ready.

Why do SBIR solicitations come out only once per year or in short intervals? . Why not keep open topic areas on a rolling basis?. Hard to imagine a start up founder / small biz in September planning to apply for $150,000 in funding for March of the the next year 😅.

I keep hearing this idea that engineers at primes are “2nd tier”, “not innovative” 😑. These ppl ARE talented and build critical tech for USA with little fanfare (and huge barriers). Primes mirror their govt incentives. Those without top eng degrees can be amazing engineers.

Shoutout to the builders & operators . In an environment of criticism, fear, and incremental improvement, it is a bold act to wake up each morning and build a rocket/satellite/factory. “…If he fails, at least fails by daring greatly”.

Friction to accessing engineering Standards is eroding American excellence in hardware tech. Shouldn’t have to spend hours as an engineer searching for basic information on GD&T or thread design that was standardized in 1996.

There are many exotic A&D component types in our industrial base where there are 1 or 2 small suppliers remaining. Seekers themselves are super complex and contain 15+ uniquely designed and sourced subcomponents. @HadrianSpace factory 1 is just the beginning to rebuild base.

Because US hasn't bought Stingers in 20 years and many components are obsolete, Raytheon CEO Greg Hayes says the company will have to redesign components in the missile and seeker head if it wants to replenish stocks given to Ukraine. "That’s going to take some time," he said.

Default aero engineer daily life right out of school is doing certification or manufacturing paperwork. It is boring. This shocked me at 22 . Best way to get more fun + responsibility is to be a problem solver . Use root cause/5why to fix any inefficiencies (process/part) you can.

@thesheetztweetz A positive step, but not enough to lead the world (& convince adversaries to join). USA SM3 capability is validated & exquisite satellites are becoming obsolete (commercial launch + constellations enabled), so this fully benefits USA with little downside.

DOD and defense primes should start investing in and building up their current people instead of spending tax dollars at Mckinsey. The engineers in our defense industry know how to move *strategy* forward, but usually aren’t empowered.

@varunabgupta Yes! I worked on amazing tech at Raytheon with many brilliant men and women. Our lack of engineering skills or ideas weren’t what held the program(s) back… we had to bring tech prowess + get heavy bureaucratic buy-in for every attempt at innovation.

@mouthofmorrison This would be refreshing. At business school we are shown companies that failed to scale but almost never cases where product-market fit was not found . Bessemer Venture Partners has an “anti-portfolio” where they were pitched but chose not to invest.

@BellikOzan I’ve been thinking a lot about thermoelectrics for Space. Ripe for innovation w/new materials science. Used on Mars rovers, for example: Thermoelectric modules can also be used as “insulation” layer on satellites and to capture waste heat from engines.

@Keshavatearth @chlacc Would also look for roles like “production control”, “buyer”, “supply chain analyst” which heavily feature communication and planning skills but oft don’t require STEM degree. From there you can learn the tech because of high exposure.

The hardest part about a cold call at HBS is answering the question the professor actually asks vs just blabbing your general thoughts about a topic/case. Many reps here at school and I’m still working on this.

@johnamauro Hi John! Requirements management for systems engineering - it is a design & certification phase activity for planes, missiles, satellites, and their subcomponents. Existing sw solutions are terrible. IMO this is a main root cause of aerospace delays and extreme costs 😖.

@Keshavatearth @chlacc @Keshavatearth . If you are someone who is curious, has empathy, and can methodically solve problems, then you will do well in manufacturing (tech degree or not). Signaling/matching title for jobs is a barrier. Find small projects where you solved tech q’s + more to add value.
