@xkcd The amount of work that went into making this an accurate drawing of what that would look like is impressive. Repetitive shapes that change at the end of each book.

@OneFeIISwoop If birth rates fall, you have no babies. If you have no babies now, in 20 years you have no 20 year olds. Productivity comes from 20-65 year olds. You are in for a bad time when you have less 20-30 year olds than 65-75 year olds.

The net effect of the US military globally has been to establish and uphold free trade. For every one of the (many) victims, there are tens of people raised out of poverty. The last 70 years of global peace and prosperity are largely attributable to US military dominance.

So true. 3D printing itself is just “standard manufacturing technology (extrusion, powder sintering) + computer control.” So many ways left to put atoms together. Energy production + manufacturing capability are the measures of civilization. Lots to build

@vgr A contrarian take: It is better to blindly over-believe in causality because it mentally connects your expected outcomes to your actions. This means that it strengthens your incentive to do things that will benefit you. Ex: If I work hard I will succeed vs I might succeed.

@landon20s Frankly I find this take kind of ridiculous. Yes, it’s true that VCs have stigmatized the NDA, and so it’s a bad idea to bring one, but it has as much to do with VCs wanting to back-channel and DD companies than any of these reasons.

My personal thesis on being an parts/material supplier in the US: 1. Deliver on time. 2. Deliver what you said you would deliver. 3. Charge what you said you would charge. Seems basic, but these 3 things will put you head and shoulders over most, go ask any design engineer.

@a_musingcat It’s a transient. Massive opportunity opened up in software 15-25 years ago, so demand for software engineers 10000x-ed. It takes a little while to spin up university programs and educate enough software engineers to meet demand, so in the mean time, people will pay a premium.

@MikePFrank Not an expert, but a common requirement that pushes for many mirrors vs few is the difficulty of producing aspherical surfaces to optical accuracy. To focus light, the optimal shape is rarely spherical, but many spherical mirrors w canceling error can approach the ideal behavior.

@FilArons Spent 2 years of my life building 3D printed strain wave gearboxes. ~70% of the BOM cost (not price) of a robot arm is just in gearboxes. Cheap gearboxes are the solution to the expensive robot arm problem, rest of the arm is a couple of PCBs and some cheap castings/extrusions.

The jump from GPT3 to GPT4 clearly crossed a line for me from incredibly cool to actually useful. It’s amazing as a “textbook of everything.” Need to check some esoteric convention in continuum mech or find the derivation of some law? it’s by far the fastest path to an answer.

@ID_AA_Carmack Overall performance envelope with differential steering would be pretty dismal, my guess to the point of posing a safety risk, since your ability to turn under braking would be practically 0. Low speed manuvering would likely be possible, but high G maneuvers are really limited.

@FilArons Mostly cost of manufacturing. Lots of strain wave gears are EDMed, and the ones that aren’t are usually 10+ CNC hours IIRC. Markup is big as well, given harmonic drive’s long term monopoly. This might come down now that their core IP has expired (2018) but has yet to.

@koko_xu_ Very solid analysis. I also think, usually, tech is much higher dimensional than, say "cost, speed, customizability," and you will see an erosion of that "core tech" advantage when you start to consider individual parts or jobs, and quirks of the process start to really matter.
