Antarctica: the coldest January ever recorded The unusually cold summer continues: at the South Pole Station, the thermometer didn’t rise above -30°C for the whole week. The average for January will almost certainly be below -30°C for the second year in a row, and only the fourth time on records dating back to 1958 – the other cases were January 1960 (-30.4°C) and 1961 (-30.6°C). This could be the coldest January ever recorded in Antarctica. And even in recent years, this wouldn’t have been a great anomaly. In 2021 (April-September) the continent experienced the coldest winter on record, followed by an abnormal month after month. Highlights of 2023 include the second coldest December on record, the coldest November in 40 years, and the coldest August since 2002. Antarctica, which is home to 90% of the earth’s ice, is cooling, that’s clear from the data.
