BREAKING: The U.S. District Court has temporarily blocked enforcement of an Idaho law meant to prevent transgender students from using school restrooms that correspond with their gender identity.
Story here:
Thrilled to add another Idahoan to our staff -
@maldonado_mia_
joins us next week as a breaking news reporter. She's an Idaho native and College of Idaho grad.
That gets us back to fully staffed, with 16 reporters, 2 visual journalists, 2 opinion writers covering our community.
JJ poured his heart and soul into these youth summits, which literally CHANGED me and my brother’s lives. Me and my bro were the only Latinos from North Idaho that came to the events back in 2016/2017, and he personally made sure we got a chance to interview for scholarships 😭😭
Today is my one year anniversary at the

I took constitutional law in college because it was the only POE class that fit in with my schedule that semester. I didn’t think of it being super useful until I started covering lawsuits filed against the state of Idaho. 🥔 Shoutout to Prof. Hunter.
👋Welcome

Several of the lease clauses reviewed by the nonprofit are explicitly illegal under Idaho law, such as entering a property without properly notifying a tenant or shutting off utilities for missing a rent payment.

“I could go to a bigger town... but I don’t want to do that. I want to set roots and raise my family here,” Buhl Public Library director Maegan Hanson said.
Here's my latest on how library-related legislation is taking a toll on Idaho librarians.

Here is the last story I wrote for the Sun:
“Like being a first-generation college student, many Latinos don’t have someone in their family that will guide them throughout the process,” he said. “It’s the same thing with voting if no one in their family has ever voted before.”
According to data from the Idaho Commission on Hispanic Affairs and the 2018 U.S. census, 72% of Latinos in Idaho are U.S. citizens and 18 years or older, making up about 101,000 eligible voters in the state.
As of Tuesday morning, the governor’s office has received more than 14,800 emails and calls in favor of House Bill 71 and more than 6,500 calls and emails asking Little to veto it.
I love Caldwell! I grew up in North Idaho and never had a Latinx community nearby until I moved for college. Living in Caldwell made me feel so safe & comforted seeing signs in Spanish & having access to homemade Mexican food just like my mom’s. Great episode

We’re having a day in Caldwell with our audio producer, Evelyn Avitia! She shares her fave C-town eats, hangs, and why racism and classism are behind Boise’s tendency to look down its nose at this unique and fun sister city
Three days ago he was in Moscow organizing the Hispanic Youth Summit at U of I. He died trying to give more opportunities to young Latinos from North Idaho. 😭😭😭 He died doing what he cared so much about — giving Idaho Latinos a chance.
JJ, my mom and I will never forget your welcoming face when we showed up to BSU at the youth summit in 2017. I had no idea that one day you would become one of my biggest supporters through college AND journalism. Siempre te voy a recordar amiguito. 😭💔💔
Here's my latest on how Latino-based scholarships are giving rural Idaho students a chance to attend college.
Thanks
@SmillerPhoto
for the great photos as always.
“It’s not about cultural pride, it’s about dominance over people of color, as opposed to brown pride, which is something that is said in Mexican communities to show support for our culture and people.”

for speaking to me about this.
To the nakie man standing at his window in his third-floor apartment facing 8th Street who thinks no one can see you, I assure you, we unfortunately can. It's 3 p.m. Put some pants on.

The Nez Perce Tribe and environmental groups are spreading awareness about the cultural and environmental costs of hydroelectricity through a short film called, “Covenant of the Salmon People.”
Yesterday was the second time Sen. Chris Trakel spoke at the Caldwell School Board meeting about the gender identity and sexual orientation proposal.
I wrote this story when it first appeared on the agenda on Dec. 12.
This afternoon Gov. Brad Little vetoed a bill that would have allowed parents to sue libraries for offering “harmful materials to minors.”

Now that the legislation session is over, I am looking to cover stories that impact Idaho’s LGBTQ+ community, particularly those who were affected by the bills that targeted drag shows, Pride events, library materials and gender-affirming care for minors.
One of my goals at the Idaho Capital Sun was to become more familiarized with statewide environmental issues. Here's my latest on how Canadian coal mines are impacting North Idaho waters.
Less than a week after he was released from prison in Idaho for a drug conviction, Danny Edwin Thompson allegedly fired a gun at a relative in Boise County.
Gov. Brad Little’s office received over 7,000 emails and calls in opposition to House Bill 710, and about 4,250 in favor of the legislation, reported by

BREAKING: Matthew Lehigh, who drove his car at two women and called them a homophobic slur, admitted to committing other crimes against the LGBTQ community in the past two weeks.
Super proud to have been a Voces intern. I wouldn’t be where I am in my career, reporting at the Idaho Capital Sun, had it not been for this program that placed me as an intern there last year. ☀️
💫RECAP: We’re reflecting on all we’ve done & preparing for next year.
In February we had our first legislative intern! She met w/ the Gov and covered bills!
💫Help us start 2024 strong by raising $2000 to round out our second year:
Today I called out my coworker for mocking my other coworker's accent. It's not funny, it's RUDE! I think of my parents and how many people remind or tease them for having an accent. That accent will NEVER go away, and it shouldn't have to. No matter how long they've lived here.
My latest deep dive is on House Bill 406, a bill that would add fentanyl to the list of substances subject to mandatory minimum sentences. But experts say these policies are ineffective at reducing crime and have greatly contributed to mass incarceration.
We're thrilled Rachel Spacek is joining the team. In her new role at InvestigateWest, she’ll examine the unique challenges faced by workers across the rural Northwest, including exploitation, dangerous working conditions and other abuses of power.
The ACLU of Idaho has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice on behalf of Latino students alleging that the Nampa School District enforces discriminatory dress code and discipline policies.
@IdahoCapitalSun
@statesnewsroom
And finally, here's my story on how librarians are feeling with bills impacting their profession.
I joined the Sun with barely any political reporting experience, but this story, I feel, represents my growth as a state politics writer.
Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit
@INL
’s ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new biomass feedstock facility — a facility that has equipment that can turn garbage into usable material such as aviation fuel, car parts or building materials.

Do you have plans for your spring semester yet?
We do!
We want to pay you to intern in an Idaho newsroom this spring. No journalism experience necessary!

This is my last article at the Idaho Statesman. Working here has been an honor, & I’m so grateful that I was able to write stories like this one outside of breaking news. I’m going out with a bang, and am so excited for what’s next!
“Outside of drag I’m very shy, so it was an opportunity for me to get out of my comfort zone,” she said. “It is to showcase my culture. I am Latina, I want to be who I am, and bring some of that flavor to the Treasure Valley.”

Public officials say Idaho’s reputation as the potato state won’t fade — even if in June, the Oregon Legislature adopted a resolution to make the potato its state vegetable.

this rising generation of Idahoans makes me so hopeful and proud on the worst of days.
Angela’s been in Moscow for the last few weeks working hard covering this story. For the journalists from Idaho and/or a part of the Vandal family, I especially appreciate your hard work 💛🖤
This one was tough to write. My heart hurts for the families who’ve suffered the most unimaginable loss. I hope they can get closure and find peace.

Idaho is one of 4 states in the country that does not have an insanity plea. Here’s a story I’ve been working on explaining what the competency restoration process looks like in Idaho.
Idaho has made progress in honoring the history of its indigenous populations, but there’s still work to be done. Thanks

A North Idaho Republican, through House Bill 615, said his goal was to make Idaho undesirable for undocumented people by preventing their access to publicly-funded assistance. That bill is not moving forward in the Legislature.
“They could be selling a lot more power to California,” Johnson said. “But Idaho utilities are trying to keep the rates for their customers.”
Here's my latest story about why utilities are on the rise in Idaho.
🚀 We have liftoff! 🚀 Welcome to Utah News Dispatch. We’re excited to be here and ready to bring you free, fair and compelling coverage of Utah’s state government.
The Garden Valley School District is asking the public for help to feed its students. Federal programs offering meal waivers ended at the beginning of the school year.
“The reality and facts are that we have a certain number of kids that routinely skip meals because of a lack of funds to pay for a meal, and frankly, regardless of why this is, it breaks my heart.”
This was the most emotional interview I've had so far in my career. I'm honored that I got to tell Tona's story, and I'm even prouder to be in a newsroom that localizes national policies.
I wrote a brief about a trades job fair in Nampa. I think about my parents who years ago, could’ve benefited and felt more welcome coming to these events had the coverage been in Spanish. Please share this piece to your Spanish speaking friends & families:
