I just played my last summer ball game. Here are 10 things I learned from the best years of my life.

1- Anyone that says travel baseball is solely for the individual, has never experienced a true team atmosphere. 95% of the teams that i’ve witnessed in the circuit are there to win baseball games. Travel baseball creates competitors.

4- Your parents set you up for so much success. Parents do so much for players, being money, time, and other sacrifices. Money being the big one as it’s not cheap to travel the country and play high quality baseball. Always consider yourself blessed to have these opportunities.

6- Don’t build up the moment. I was once told that in order to succeed you can’t get too high or too low. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Baseball involves way to much failure to put that amount of pressure on yourself. There’s always more opportunities. Remember to breathe.

7- Team activities mean so much. Of course your going to remember the go ahead 3 rbi double in the seventh. Your also going to remember the team dinner at the burger place or the late nights with 10 dudes piled on 2 queen beds. Say yes, don’t stay in, make those memories.

10- Smile more. It’s going to be so much fun. Take in the little things. Time flies, so take some time to take a look around and smile.

2- Embracing instate/regional opponents is cool. Guys that you play against all summer long for years straight, befriend them. It’s still okay to always want to beat these guys but celebrate their successes. They come from your same roots.

8- Be that dude that everyone wants to be around. These guys are your brothers, you train all winter long with them. Be their brother too. The roster full of brothers is the most powerful, not just because your going to win a lot, because it’s going to mean more when you win.

3- The organization you play for matters, but only if you make it matter. Playing for a top of the line organization is only half the battle, buying into their core values is what makes it matter. Be a an example of what their program stands for so they can be in your corner.

5- Working your ass off is amazing, but take care of your body. You play way to many baseball games to not be taking care of your body. The toll that we put on our bodies during the summer is immense. It’s going to start adding up faster if you don’t take it seriously now.

9- It doesn’t matter about who’s behind the backstop. The guys that focus solely on who’s there at the games are the same guys that don’t get the calls from the dudes behind the backstop. Play your game and it will happen.
