1/2 So yesterday, a beautiful heron flew into my house. I live in central London & couldn’t believe what was happening. It was injured and a couple of crows were trying to attack it. The RSPCA don’t have an out of hours phone line, so I had to figure out what to do.
🎉🎉 Update on the heron🎉🎉
I spoke to the wonderful vet. The bird has just been collected by Wildlife Rescue Services. She is not badly injured and is going to be rehabilitated.
I’m not crying, you’re crying.
1/2 So yesterday, a beautiful heron flew into my house. I live in central London & couldn’t believe what was happening. It was injured and a couple of crows were trying to attack it. The RSPCA don’t have an out of hours phone line, so I had to figure out what to do.
2/2 The poor bird was petrified and my heart was in pieces. Huge shout out to the emergency vet who took her in. They were expecting a small bird, so were a little shocked, but took her anyway. Huge thanks to my neighbour P for catching her so calmly. This was beyond my skill set
1/2 The strangest thing about my visit from the heron was that she chose me. She was on my doorstep, waiting for me to open up. Can’t stop wondering what it means. You lovely folk have said luck, an omen, purity, longevity, a messenger from Athena. We may never know 👇👇
2:2 But a strange thing happened when the heron was safely at the vet. Ideas for the novel I’m writing fell from my pen. I went to bed with my notebook and pen, and it was like a fever dream. I wonder what else is coming?
To cheer up the January blues, I have 2 signed, personalised copies of Madwoman to give away, & I’m throwing in a box of chocolates too. Selected as a Book of the Year in the Times & Sunday Times (2022)

Happy 103rd birthday to my incredible Aunt Rose, who taught me that nothing is impossible at any age.
The first photo is her with her MA thesis, which she wrote in her seventies.
My dog died 2 years ago & for most of that time getting another one has felt like a huge act of disloyalty. But just recently, this breed has been tugging at my heartstrings.
Can you tell me about long-haired dachshunds? Do they shed or bark a lot? I’d ideally like a rescue.
Everyone! Stop what you are doing and look at this AMAZING painting of the heron who visited my kitchen, by the very talented

I might have a little something in my eye.

Reader, we met on Twitter.
He is kind & funny, & a gifted writer. Children & animals love him, & he’s the only person in the world I like having in the room while I write. He has restored my faith that Twitter can be a positive place & there are good men in the world

Proud mum moment. She learned to live independently, finished her degree and passed her driving test. Our last drive back from Durham was a shared one ❤️
RIP Monty. You knew how to live - wish I could be as happy as you were all the time. Thank you for the comfort, fun and joy you brought, and for the amazing memories 💔💔

Selfie to mark reaching 50,000 words of the novel-in-progress. This is always a point of exhaustion, where I realise how much I’ve done, and also how much there still is to do. Please send whisky and cute pet pics.
I just got my first foreign rights deal for my new book that hasn’t been announced yet. I tell you this not to tease, but because it lifted me out of a writing trough. For anyone who needs to hear this, keep chasing your dreams because things turn around all the time.

Twitter friends, I am getting off here for a while. In May/June I submitted a novel to my publisher, got divorced & had an offer on a new house accepted. Need time out to digest everything & dream up Book 4.Take care of yourselves & I look forward to seeing you on the other side
I’m doing an interview for a thing, as they say, and my favourite question is: Who has been my greatest influence.
Answer: my darling Aunt Rose, aged 103, who taught me that nothing is impossible at any age, and wrote an MA thesis in her 70s.
I just went to talk to my mum’s book club about
#Madwoman
. Mum didn’t live to see me a published writer, she lived through all the years of rejection with me. It was special to talk to her friends tonight - the next best thing to having her with us.
I’m doing a

Sticking around here, but who knows for how much longer? For me, the best part of the dead bird site has been you lot. I appreciate each & every one of you. I’m too old and lazy to build up new followers on another platform. Just saying.
Mrs Dalloway was published

So happy to tell you unofficially that I have a new novel coming out in July 2024. Can’t wait to tell you more once it’s official.
I hate it when other people tease like this, but couldn’t keep it to myself.
